The College is the second oldest women’s college in the city of Hyderabad. The College owes its existence to the foresight of Sri. Raja Bahadur Venkata Rama Reddy, Kotwal of the erstwhile Hyderabad State, who believed that modern education is the most appropriate vehicle for emancipation and advancement of women. His vision was translated to reality by the untiring efforts of Sri Burgula Ramakrishna Rao, the first Chief Minister of erstwhile Hyderabad State, Shri Madapati Hanumantha Rao, former Mayor of Hyderabad and Chairman of the Legislative Council A.P, and Shri K.V. Ranga Reddy, former Deputy Chief Minister of A.P, who were the pioneers in propagating women education in the State. This legacy of noble service to women education has been continued by successive managements comprising of Judges, Professors and other people of eminence in the field of education. The College had the rare privilege of welcoming Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, who laid the foundation stone on 3rd January 1954; Dr. S. Radha Krishnan, former President of India, who inaugurated the College building on 6th January 1955; and Smt. Indira Gandhi, former Prime Minister, who inaugurated the Hostel Building on 28th July 1965. The visit of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, on 5th August 2005 to address the students on the eve of ‘Golden Jubilee Celebrations’ is yet another landmark in the history of the College. The College is recognized by UGC under 2(f) and 12(b); affiliated to Osmania University; conferred Autonomous status by UGC since 1989; selected by UGC as a ‘College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)’since 2010; accredited with “A” Grade by National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) from 2007 to 2017;and was awarded B++ grade in 2018 in the changed accreditation procedure of NAAC. The College is centrally located in the City of Hyderabad with a lovely and sprawling campus; 6 buildings; 48 classrooms; 31 science laboratories; 13 staff rooms and a campus hostel for students from rural areas. Presently, 17 different UG programs and 5 PG programs are offered under Semester and Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). Besides, several conventional, career oriented, and skill enhancement certificate courses are also offered as value addition. Hello everyone! This episode is going to be very special. All the episodes that we will release this month will be important, as they relate with one part of Hyderabad’s history, which is suppressed since independence. In 2017, India celebrated 70 years of its independence. Funnily, the independence day back in 1947 didn’t mean anything to Hyderabad. Hyderabad was a princely state until 1948. It comprised parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana, had 16 districts ( 8 in Telangana and 8 in Maharashtra). The present-day Andhra and Rayalaseema areas were with the British. During/after 15 August 1947, most princely states Joined the Indian union, but, Hyderabad was one among the handful that refused to join. The state of Hyderabad was ruled by the last Nizam- Mir Osman Ali Khan.

    TELANGANA MOVEMENT The Demand for a Separate State - K. Jayashankar* A Historical Perspective The people of Telangana are once again restive, reiterating their demand for a separate state. The demand of the people of this region for a separate state is not a new development. It was voiced much before the formation of Andhra Pradesh and continues to be raised even thereafter. The reason for the opposition of people of Telangana to join Visalandhra (metamorphosed to Andhra Pradesh) was fear of neglect and injustice in the enlarged state and the reason for their refusal to continue in the present state is the actual experience of becoming victims of neglect and injustice. The States Reorganization Commission (SRC) set up by the government of India in early 50s to examine the question of reorganization of states of the country was, in fact, not in favour of merging the Telangana region with the then Andhra state. After a very careful examination of the issues involved the SRC recommended: “... It will be in the interest of Andhra as well as Telangana if, for the present, the Telangana area is constituted into a separate state which may be known as the Hyderabad state, with provision for its unification with Andhra after the general elections likely to be held in or about 1961, if by two-thirds majority the legislature of the residuary Hyderabad state expresses itself in favour of such unification”. (SRC Report: Para 386) The commission further recommended: “Andhra and Telangana have common interests and we hope these interests will tend to bring the people closer to each other.

These have gone unexamined for a long time. Therefore, they went unchallenged and unquestioned. Not only those who want the state to be divided believed them to be true but also those who are opposed to the division thought initially that there might be a grain of truth in them. We do not know what the purveyors of these claims and allegations thought about them when they brought them into circulation. Did genuinely think that they were true? Or they just propagated them to serve their separatist agenda? If they genuinely thought that their allegations and claims were true, this book will give them the correct picture. They should then have no problem in reexamining their argument and revising their position.

Telangana comprising ten districts was an integral part of Nizam State. Though India attained independence, the people of Telangana were forced to be under the tyrannical rule of Nizam. Only with patel’s intervention through the army action Telangana became an integral part of Indian Union. Subsequently Telangana was merged with Andhra State leading to the formation a United Andhra Pradesh. Ever since its merger, the people of Telangana started raising their voice for the formation a separate State of Telangana. The paper highlights all the developments that took place till the formation of Telangana State on 2nd June 2015.
