Background sources............................................................................... 106 Introduction Rock-and-roll has often been conceived as the representation of protest, revolution and drastic change versus tradition. The aim of my dissertation is to prove that there is in fact a tradition of rock-and-roll, as we shall see for example within the small communities of New Jersey. I spent one academic year in Hamilton, NY, where I worked at Colgate University. While in the United States, I had the chance to travel quite often to New York City and New Jersey, meeting locals and also collaborators of the artists that I dealt with in my dissertation. I also visited many of the places that I mentioned. At Colgate I was able to refer to many sources that I wouldn't have had access to, in Italy – e.g. texts about the history of New Jersey or the history of rock-and-roll itself. Some Colgate students discussed with me about tradition, rock-and-roll and New Jersey, giving me useful information that I integrated in my dissertation. The aim of the first chapter of my dissertation is to analyze the definition of 'tradition' to try and understand what can be defined as 'traditional' in regards to contemporary music, and how this definition may or may not apply to rock-and- roll. The chapter analyzed the concept of 'tradition' in different contexts in the United States, to focus eventually on the specific idea of 'tradition' in New Jersey and in music. I also took into consideration the evolution of the concept of tradition in today's globalized world. In the second chapter I focused on three artists in particular: Southside Johnny, Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi. By studying their personal and artistic biographies, together with their lyrics and musical influences, I analyzed how their connection to the local communities impacted on their music and, vice versa, how their songs changed the perception of rock-and-roll in the local communities from the 1970s to this day. I also showed aspects of their songs and live performances that contribute to create what can be considered as a 'tradition of rock-and-roll' in New Jersey, and more specifically on the Jersey Shore. One more aspect that is thoroughly analyzed is the charity effort of these artists to rebuild communities in New Jersey and Philadelphia. 1 Finally, in the third chapter I focused on the context of New Jersey and the Jersey Shore. I described the history of New Jersey and Asbury Park in particular, in order to give a clearer picture of the context into which Southside, Springsteen and Bon Jovi were born and raised. For this section, it was very interesting and useful to be able to read the history of Asbury Park written by Wolff1. Furthermore, I discussed the results of a survey I conducted in 2012 among New Jersey residents and rock-and-roll fans from all over the world. Drawing on the answers to the survey, I focused on the aspects of the songs and of the performances which appear to be the most important to establish a tradition of rock-and-roll in New Jersey. More generally, the town’s location, history, demographics and economy shaped his life and work. “County Fair,” the first of three sections of this paper, will recount the July 1982 episode and its aftermath. “Growin’ Up,” the second, will review Bruce’s years in Freehold and examine the ways in which the town influenced him. “Goin’ Home,” the third, will highlight instances when he returned in person, in spirit and in song. In this paper, we examine how ride-hailing is transforming the transportation practices of one group of passengers - people with visual impairments in metropolitan India. Through a qualitative study consisting of interviews and observations, we examined the use and impact of these services on our target population, who otherwise contend with chaotic, unreliable, and largely inaccessible modes of transportation. We found that ride-hailing services positively affects participants’ notions of independence, and we tease out how independence for our participants is not just about ‘doing things alone, without help’ but is also situated, social and relative. Furthermore, we show how accessibility, in the case of ride-hailing in India, is a socio-technical and collaborative achievement, involving interactions between the passenger, the driver, and the technology.     ACCESS: CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN EDUCATION 2010, VOL. 29, NO. 1, 10–20 Destination anywhere: Experiences of place in the work of Ed Ruscha and Andreas Gursky Kristen Sharp RMIT University ABSTRACT This paper examines how the meaning of place and identification with place can be produced through photographic images of the city. As an aesthetic, social and cultural practice, photography provides a way of imagining place and a means of knowing and classifying the urban spaces. Photographic images of the city can be understood as a form of aesthetic knowledge production, which represents and enacts the experiences of the urban environment. The urban spaces imaged by artists Ed Ruscha and Andreas Gursky, in the 1960s and 1990s respectively, actively represent and perform the symbolic and material properties of urban spaces. By exploring the ways that these artists read and map city spaces and how they articulate an experience of the city that engages with the identification of place, an argument is presented about how this process and imaging can be situated in relation to anthropological and geographic concepts of place. More specifically, what this paper explores is how their work demonstrates a sense of place that is complex and mobile, which can oscillate between notions of site specificity, identification and non- place as defined by Marc Augé. The South Brunswick Senior Center will highlight its 25th anniversary on Sept. 22 with a celebratory party. Betsy Sansig, 92, remembers when a celebration was held to mark the first offi­ cial day of the opening of the center in 1991. “The mayor was here. And a lot of big shots,” she said of the ribbon-cutting and luncheon to follow. Prior to the establishment of the senior center, a group of seniors would meet in the early 1980s at the municipal building to pe­ tition for a space of their own while using Crossroads Middle School, the VFW, the high school and Woodlol Park as meeting grounds. “We used to join trips. We used to go away sometimes for a week ... and book a hotel,” Sansig said. Then, with permission of the mayor and council at the time, a 10,000-square-foot structure was built for a population of 2,000 residents who were age 55 or older, with about 50 seniors coming to the center each day. A group would go door-to-door selling stickers to residents — Sansig did not re­ member what the stickers looked like — in order to buy $3,000 worth of kitchenware and dishware for the new center.
