Culture: Smithsonian African American Film Festival 21 Lifting Traces: Memories of London 25 Luchino Visconti 31 From Co-op to LUX: The Last Decade of the London Film-Makers’ Co-op 37 The Puppet Master: The Complete Jiří Trnka 41 London p26 The fall season opens with four recent films — from Cameroon, Georgia, Iran, and Kyrgyzstan — shown in association with the citywide festival Films Across Borders: Stories of Women. It continues with the inaugural Smithsonian African American Film Fes- tival, a collaboration with the National Museum of African American History and Culture, featuring pre- sentations by Simone Leigh and Ephraim Asili. Other special guest artists include Nicolás Combarro, who will present his recent documentary on Spanish photographer Alberto García-Alix; Super 8 film poet Helga Fanderl of Germany; and British filmmaker William Raban, who will introduce two programs of his work as part of the series Lifting Traces: Memo- ries of London, programmed in conjunction with the exhibition Rachel Whiteread. The annual Rajiv Vaidya Memorial Lecture, Noisy Archives and the Future of Memory, will be delivered by archivist Rick Prelinger of the Prelinger Archives, recently acquired by the Library of Congress. Unique film series this season also include a retrospective of Italian auteur Luchino Visconti; From Co-op to LUX: The Last Decade of the London Film-Makers’ Co-op, with films made in the 1990s by Vivienne Dick, Peter Gidal, and others; and The Puppet Master: The Complete Jiří Trnka, a comprehensive review of the renowned Czech animator. La línea de sombra is a powerful portrait of one of Spain’s most renowned photographers. His story is told in first person by the artist himself, sitting mainly in his studio and gazing directly at the viewer. Filmmaker Nicolás Combarro is also an artist and curator who has organized many exhibitions of works by García-Alix, primarily portraits of people who, like the photographer himself, lead excessive lives. “I want to give people dignity when I photograph them. She wants to introduce her young son, but even more she wants new knowledge about her own past. Mbakam speaks at length with her mother and the other village women in a surprising journey of self-discovery as Mama Bamiléké talks about tradition and her own arranged marriage, and about the robust alliance of local women, a comfort in times of need. As the Georgian filmmaker explains, “I wanted to show the real life of my land with real people. Svan is used in the film, which is one of the languages in Georgia.     "Wyler knew how to get to the truth of each actor's capacity," actor-director Vincent Sherman, who played Harry Becker in William Wyler's "Counsellor at Law," told the Goldwyn Theater audience after a screening of the ftlm in July. "Counsellor at Law," Wyler's 1933 examination of the business and personal issues confronting a high-powered New York attorney, was screened as part of the Academy's centennial salute to the Oscar­ winning director. "Wyler wasn't always articulate about the details of the scene, TERENCE STAMP but he knew when it was right," Sherman said. "He knew how to squeeze every ounce of emotion that was in a scene and to get the best out of everybody." Sherman was joined on the panel by actor Terence Stamp, who starred in "The Collector," for WYLER'S BEN-HUR, CHARLTON HESTON , IS which Wyler earned the last of his directing nominations; actress Carroll Baker, who was directed INTRODUCED FROM THE AUDIENCE. by Wyler in "The Big Country;" and writer Fay Kanin, who with husband Michael was a colleague of Wyler. The panel was moderated by film critic Peter Rainer. Wyler earned a record twelve Academy Award nominations for directing, and during his career won Oscar statuettes for "Mrs. Miniver," "The Best Years of Our Lives" and "Ben-Hur." He earned nominations in the Best Picture category for "Roman Holiday" and "Friendly Persuasion," which also were among his directing nominations. He received the Irving G.ThaibergAward in 1965. When offered "The Big Country," Carroll Baker said, she was "a little bit self-conscious" because after "Baby Doll" she was being offered only "little sexpots." She mentioned her concern to Wyler.

In studying the history of motion pictures, we will take into account not only the major figures who influenced their development both technologically and aesthetically, but also the cultural influences, politics, and economic factors that helped shape them. We will consider the development of motion pictures as a narrative form, cultural commodity, political object, art form, and avenue of escapist entertainment. One of the keys emphases in the class will be the historical intersections of various sites of cultural production (movies, television, advertising, censorship, political propaganda, etc.) and how they influence and shape each other. Because the breadth of international film history far exceeds what can be covered in a single semester, this course will focus most heavily on the history of film in the United States, although we also look at various historical moments in the Soviet Union, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, and Poland.
