EDITORIAL The AUTUMNAL MEETING of our Society will be held at Blackpool on Wednesday, 16th October, at 4.30 p.m., in the Wesleyan Lecture Hall, Adelaide Street. A paper on" Early Nonconformist Churches in Lancashire" is expected from the Rev. J. H. Colligan, Presbyterian minister of Lancaster, and opportunity for discussion will be afforded. " Our Society has sustained a grievous loss by the death of the Rev. Bryan Dale, M.A., of Bradtord, which took place on 30th July. Mr. Dale was a Cornishman, having been born at Cury, near Helstone, on 22nd February, 1832. Inhisyouth he was a member of the Wesleyan Association, now merged in the United Methodist Church, but having adopted Congregational principles he entered the Western College, then seated at Plymouth, at the age of 18. His first pastorate was at Coggeshall, Essex, the church founded by Dr. John Owen ; where he was ordained in 1855, and ministered about seven years. During that time he contributed materially to the success of the local bicentenary commemoration of the ejected ministers, and wrote The A mwls of Coggeshall, which is of permanent value. In 1863 he removed to Sion Chapel, Halifax, where he exercised a fruitful ministry for over 23 years, during which time two new Congregational churches were established in the town. Retiring from pastoral work in 1886 he became secretary of the Yorkshire Congregational Union, in which capacity he served the churches to the end of his life. His life of The Good Lord Wharton takes rank as a standard biography ; and by his untiring efforts the perversion of that nobleman's '' Bible Charity" was in large measure -though not altogether-rectified. -

History is bunk b. Language is slippery (“a word means what I say it means”) c. No other “church” can tell us what to believe. We are the church – period! d. Misgivings about theology – especially Systematic (formulaic) theology i. Inductive v. deductive Bible Study (top-down/Bottom-up) ii. Unity of truth – WHOLE Bible. Big picture v. little picture iii. Imposition of “foreign” grids (e.g. Aristotelian philosophy) e. “Doctrine” [noun: a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a church, political party, or other group]; “Dogma” [noun: a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true]. i. “Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 1:13). Pattern = ὑποτύπωσις. KJV “the form of sound words.” Every discipline has its own set of specialist words. Paul does not simply say, “memorize the Old Testament.” ii. De Krey Excerpt More information Introduction to Parts I and II: London and the nation london and the crisis of 1659–1660 When Charles II processed through the city of London on 29 May 1660, upon his return to England, the occasion marked more than a personal triumph for a king who had suffered a decade of political frustration after the execution of his father and the abolition of monarchy. Charles’s return to the kingdom after years of exile and hardship was also a political and emotional catharsis for a city that had contributed more than any other locality to the collapse of Stuart monarchy in the 1640s. Charles’s route was crowded and lined by the civic militia and by thousands of citizens drawn up in their guilds. The streets were hung with tapestries, pennants, banners, and spring flowers; and wine was said to be flowing in every conduit and fountain. The king’s appearance was greeted by “such shouting as the oldest man alive never heard”; and this celebratory din was increased by the ringing of church bells and by the many trumpets and drums in the royal procession.1 Charles required four hours to pass through the city and Westminster to Whitehall, and popular rejoicing continued for another three days and nights.2 The new king was well aware of the ironies of this frenzied London re- ception. -

SCHNEPPER Dissertation Director: Alastair Bellany My dissertation, “Jonas Cast Up at London: The Experience of New World Churches in Revolutionary England,” offers a completely new way of approaching the history of religious struggle and debate during the English Revolution--blending the history of religious polemic and identity-formation with the history of the book and of print culture, and, for the first time, placing these epochal struggles over church government and religious freedom within a dynamic Atlantic context. With over one hundred printed books and pamphlets as my research base, my project uncovers the hitherto under-explored importance of English Atlantic colonial churches on the fiery debates over further reformation of the Church of England, and reveals a bustling world of preachers, polemicists and printers who refashioned the experiences of religious life in the Americas for English readers eager to recreate their own church according to what they took to be God’s will. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS While this dissertation bears my name, an entire village participated in its creation. -

Editorial E have again to apologize for delay of the present issue. It is entirely due, as on a former occasion, t0 depletion of the staff at the printing-office owing to the war. W. * * Our Autumnal meeting was held in Birmingham on 4th October. Interesting papers were read by the Rev. A. G. Matthews, M.A., on Nonconformity in Stajfo,,dshire before r672; and by Mr. W. Wimbury on Congregationalism in Worcestershire. We hope to give the substance of these papers in our next. , About four years hence we shall be invited to celebrate the Tercentenary of The Pilgrim Fathers. Already plans are being formed on the other side of the Atlantic for a worthy commemora tion ; and it is proposed that on "Forefathers' Day," 1920, Memorial Sermons shall be preached in every Congregational Church in America l This is what our transatlantic friends might -if the suggestion had come from this side-have called "a large order," but it is the right thing to do, and it becomes us to remember that the men of the Mayflower belong to us as truly as to their lineal descendants. They went out from us, not "because they were not of us," but because the England of that day was not worthy of them. There is ample time to decide on the form which the English Commemoration shall take ; but about the date there can scarcely be two opinions. It was on the 6th September, 1620, that the Pilgrims finally set sail from Plymouth, and that date ought to be as firmly fixed in our national calendar as that of the Gunpowder Plot or the Battle of Trafalgar.
