THE NEWSLETTER AT THE ROOTS OF THE GRAND UNION BENEFICE OF BLISWORTH AND STOKE BRUERNE/ SHUTLANGER, WITH GRAFTON REGIS, ALDERTON AND MILTON MALSOR Our New Rector Great news! In the last month we have, across our churches, had the delight of announcing that a new Rector has been appointed by Bishop Donald for the Grand Union Benefice. We are excited to announce that Rev’d Canon Richard Stainer will be joining us later in the year. He is married to Monique and looks forward to coming to us from Higham Ferrers. With a background in rural ministry including places such as Cogenhoe, Little and Great Houghton, we look forward to welcoming him and his family formally later after the summer. More news on that and piece personally from Richard to come in due course. Peter Heffron Pastoral Letter As you all know, we said goodbye to Rev’d Andrea in May. In the absence of a Rector currently, for this month of July, we invite our friend, Sue, to share some thoughts of her own with us all. July is here already, we are already into the second half of the year and, hazarding a guess that many of you reading this have also entered the second half of life, I wonder what your hopes and concerns are as we turn towards lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer? The reality can so often be different from the ‘looked forward to’ plans for reunions and sunny days; diaries may clash rather than synchronise and summer storms or wet days may send us diving for cover. By the same token, when all seems bleak or frustrating for one reason or another, the arrival of an unexpected but welcome guest may cheer us on our way. Our lives undergo peaks and troughs in a similar way to the weather patterns, and our outlook on the events in the world around us is often coloured by the state of our inner world. The book of Psalms in the Bible must cover almost every emotion experienced by humankind and, as such there is almost certain to be one at least to match our mood of the moment; and while interpretation can vary dependent on the translation used, we can, by using well respected translations, find some amazingly hopeful echoes of faith which has endured for thousands of years: one of the psalms set for the first Sunday in July starts out ‘I will exalt you, LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths’. The psalmist, who in this case may have been King David, carries on a conversation with his God about the circumstances of his situation, and receives help. ‘LORD my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me’. We may not know the precise nature of the healing, but we do know it occurred, because David says ‘you turned my wailing into dancing.’ Something had changed in his life. How might our lives and the lives of those we love change for the better if we set aside a little time each day this summer to remind ourselves what a precious gift life is and to give thanks as David did for the blessings he had received? May your summer be blessed this year. Sue Cutts Streetchurch The Benefice team is on duty again at Streetchurch on Sunday 21 July. Donations may be left with Linda or Doris in Alderton; Jean Glanville co-ordinates donations in Grafton Regis, donations from Blisworth should be left in the church porch before 11.30 a m, please, and donations for Stoke Bruerne and Shutlanger may be left with Roger Evans. We are hoping that the weather improves before our visit to Streetchurch. When the sun shines, everyone is more cheerful. Thank you to all who donate so generously – sandwiches, crisps, cakes, wrapped biscuits, fruit, squash (orange and summer fruits), tea and coffee. The soup is popular even on the warmest days. Thank you everyone. It is always a good team effort from you generous people in the Grand Union Benefice. VILLAGE NEWS Monday Group We are a group who have sadly lost someone we loved deeply, and if you also have suffered the same sadness, we would welcome you to join us. We meet in Milton Malsor church on the first Monday of each month from 2.00 p m to 3.30 p m, but not in August. We have refreshments, chat and an occasional speaker. If you come along you will not find us a miserable group, but a friendly, welcoming group. Geoffrey Goswell, tel 01604701572. STOKE BRUERNE Spencer Bruerne Cricket Club (the following article should have appeared in the June edition of GRASS): The pavilion at Stoke Bruerne home of Spencer Bruerne Cricket Club is 50 years old this year. To mark this, the club is hosting a game against Northants Police to celebrate this event on Sunday 30 June with a 2.00 p m start. This will be exactly 50 years and 1 day since the opening of the pavilion so to celebrate this, the bar will be open all day, and there will be a barbecue and a raffle with the first prize of up to £1,000. All local residents/families and former players are welcome to come along and share this day with us as we look back at the last 50 years and forward to the next 50. We have recently spent some money renovating the building and have further plans to upgrade the facilities even further, so come along and enjoy the day and you never know you might go home a little richer! Ian Stimson Stoke Bruerne Parish Council Stoke Bruerne Litter Pick Thank you to all those residents who gave up their time back in March to help with the village litter pick. We certainly think that the village looks much tidier. It was also great to have so many volunteers so thank you again. Speed Indicator Device (SID) You may be wondering why this still hasn't been installed. We are doing our best to get the electrical contractor to speak to the device provider and hopefully co-ordinate the installation within the next few weeks. Not only will the device indicate to drivers that they are speeding but it will also record all speed data. The device will initially be installed on the corner of Church Lane and Shutlanger Road. The Parish Council would like to thank the David Blagrove Trust for offering to part fund the device. Vacancy for a Parish Councillor The Parish Council was very sad to receive the resignation of Linda Karklis from the Council. We would like to take this opportunity to thank her for all of her hard work over many years. Linda's resignation means that we have a vacancy for a Parish Councillor. If anybody has a couple of hours to spare every 6 weeks and is interested in community matters, please contact Alison, our Clerk, for more details: [email protected]. It is important that the Parish Council has a full membership. Current members will serve until May 2020 when elections will be held. If the Parish Council is not able to recruit sufficient numbers to operate, then the District Council would be forced to step in and charge a great deal via the precept to run the Parish Council. Please consider becoming a parish councillor - we only meet every 6 weeks and time required between meetings is very limited. Noticeboard on the Village Green The wooden noticeboard has come to the end of its days. It will shortly be replaced by a recycled plastic material one the same as the one on Rookery Lane. This means it will be maintenance free and have a reduced whole-life cost.
