  • “Power Femininity” and Popular Women's Magazines in China
International Journal of Communication 10(2016), 2831–2852 1932–8036/20160005 “Power Femininity” and Popular Women’s Magazines in China EVA CHEN National Chengchi University, Taiwan Western women’s glossy magazines (“glossies”) have made increasing inroads in the Chinese market and advocate a “power femininity,” which celebrates women’s assertive individualism and power as consumerist agency. While this power femininity has global neoliberal resonances, it also taps into the unique postsocialist Chinese context, where the liberation of individual desires, including the material and the sexual, is linked with a strongly felt need to undo a past socialist wrong that repressed people and deprived them of what should be an inalienable human right. This concept departs from the caregiving, self-sacrificial, and family-oriented “natural femininity” promoted in local women’s magazines in terms of aspiration, assertiveness, and a nativist-versus- international divide, yet ultimately both the Western and local women’s magazines are united by a shared stress on the need to cultivate a distinct Chineseness in the feminine ideal and to position women’s magazines as an integral part of the Chinese nationalist project of modernization and progress. Keywords: Chinese femininity, Chineseness, neoliberalism, women’s magazines Contemporary women’s magazines in China are no longer politicized Party tools of the socialist era and instead are market driven and highly popular among women from all walks of life. Since China’s 2001 accession to the World Trade

  • Wildaid 2014 Annual Report
PAGE!2 OUR VISION WildAid’s mission is to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes. While most wildlife conservation groups focus on scientifc studies and protecting animals from poaching, WildAid works to reduce global consumption of wildlife products. Our primary strategy is mass media campaigning to reduce demand for these products with our slogan: “When the Buying Stops, the Killing Can Too.” Using the same tech- niques as high-end advertisers, we want to make conserva- tion aspirational and exciting. We also help to protect marine reserves, such as the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador and Misool Eco Resort in Indonesia, to safeguard sharks, mantas and other marine wildlife from direct threats such as overfishing. With a comprehensive management approach and appropriate technologies, WildAid delivers cost-efective enforcement to secure marine sanctuaries. PAGE!3 LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER In 2014, WildAid’s long-running shark fn campaign in China achieved widespread acclaim and recognition after a 50 to 70 percent reported decline in shark fn sales. This was the conclusion of multiple sources, from shark fn traders, to independent online and restaurant surveys, to media investigations from CNN, the Washington Post, the People’s Daily and CCTV, as well as government statistics. Vendors reported a 50 percent decrease in prices over the previous two years. Meanwhile, 85 percent of consumers surveyed online said they had given up shark fn soup in the past three years, with two-thirds citing public awareness campaigns as a main reason for ending their shark fn consumption. In Indonesia, fshermen reported it was no longer worth targeting sharks.

  • Alternative Titles Index
VHD Index - 02 9/29/04 4:43 PM Page 715 Alternative Titles Index While it's true that we couldn't include every Asian cult flick in this slim little vol- ume—heck, there's dozens being dug out of vaults and slapped onto video as you read this—the one you're looking for just might be in here under a title you didn't know about. Most of these films have been released under more than one title, and while we've done our best to use the one that's most likely to be familiar, that doesn't guarantee you aren't trying to find Crippled Avengers and don't know we've got it as The Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms. And so, we've gathered as many alternative titles as we can find, including their original language title(s), and arranged them in alphabetical order in this index to help you out. Remember, English language articles ("a", "an", "the") are ignored in the sort, but foreign articles are NOT ignored. Hey, my Japanese is a little rusty, and some languages just don't have articles. • 2016 Annual Report 4 at a Glance
2 OUR VISION WildAid’s mission is to end the illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes. While most wildlife conservation groups focus on scientific studies and anti-poaching efforts, we work to reduce global consumption of wildlife products and to increase local support for conservation efforts. Teaming up with celebrity ambassadors and using the same techniques as high-end advertisers, WildAid creates aspirational and exciting conservation campaigns that are seen by hundreds of millions of people every year. We also collaborate with government and NGO partners to secure marine protected areas, such as the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador and Palau’s Northern Reefs, from threats such as illegal fishing. With a comprehensive management approach and the use of innovative technologies, we deliver cost-effective enforcement to key marine reserves around the world. At the invitation of the Chinese government, we are now using our communications model to encourage behavior change to reduce climate change. Our campaigns encourage lower carbon transport and food choices. It often takes several years for us and other independent researchers to be able to document the fruits of our efforts, and last year we saw some massive results from previous years of work. These results prove that our model is replicable, cost-effective and an essential part of conservation success. For me personally, it was amazing to return to the Galapagos Islands after a six-year absence.

  • Waiting Alone (2004) Was His First Feature Film
搞笑网 Waiting Alone 独自等待 Dúzì děngdài Dayyan Eng 伍仕贤 (Wu Shixian), 2004 107 min Stars: Xia Yu 厦雨, Li Bingbing 李冰冰, Gong Beibi 龚蓓苾 Best First Feature (Beijing FF), Official Selection (Tokyo International FF; Thessaloniki IFF; Hawaii IFF). Best Actor (Beijing FF). Set among Beijing’s affluent and energetic youth culture, this exuberant romantic comedy follows a young man in his mid-20s, a partner in an antique shop and aspiring writer, who finds himself smitten by a young actress who seems to be the woman of his dreams, but is giving him ambiguous signals about her feelings toward him. At the same time he remains deaf to the potential of his ‘buddy’ relationship with the sister of his best guy friend. As he attempts to win over his dream woman, he battles with his own (often adolescent) insecurities, reels from the consequences of his own ineptness, and follows (or not) the advice of his close circle of friends. What might at first appear to be just another boy-gets-girl plot is saved by some unexpected (but credible) twists and turns in the story line, the completely engaging performance of Xia Yu in the lead role, and an entirely satisfying but unconventional ending. Made for millennials by one of their own—a ‘cross-cultural kid’ without nationalistic or political baggage—director Dayyan Eng rides the wave of China’s official embrace of cinema as pure entertainment. As of 2017, Waiting Alone remained the highest rated romantic comedy by Chinese audiences and critics, and a continuing favorite of Chinese millennials (八零后 Balinghou).
