DRAWN TO THE GODS Religion and Humor in The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy Instructor’s Guide Dives into a new world of religious satire illuminated through the layers of religion and humor that make up the The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy. Drawing on the worldviews put forth by three wildly popular animated shows – The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy– David Feltmate demonstrates how ideas about religion’s proper place in American society are communicated through comedy. The book includes discussion of a wide range of American religions, including Protestant and Catholic Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Native American Religions, New Religious Movements, “Spirituality,” Hinduism, and Atheism. Along the way, readers are shown that jokes about religion are influential tools for teaching viewers how to interpret and judge religious people and institutions. THE RELIGIOUS STUDIES PROJECT 1 Podcast Transcript Version 1.1, 8 December 2017 Drawn to the Gods: Religion, Comedy and Animated Television Programmes Podcast with David Feltmate (11 December 2017). Interviewed by Breann Fallon. Transcribed by Helen Bradstock. Audio and transcript available at: http://www.religiousstudiesproject.com/podcast/drawn-to-the-gods-religion-comedy-and-animated- television-programmes/ Breann Fallon (BF): If you were asked to name the TV programmes that were most religious, had the most religious content and references, which ones would you name? Seventh Heaven, maybe? Or Supernatural? Or perhaps Game of Thrones? Well, I was wondering how many of us would actually name The Simpsons, or Family Guy, or South Park. Because, did you know that 95% of Simpsons episode, 84% of Family Guy episodes and 78% of South Park episodes contain explicit religious references. These animated comedy shows are critically influential in teaching viewers about religious people and about religious institutions. The commentary created by the intersection between humour, satire and religion in these TV shows – and specifically their context of America, creates an interesting image of what is supposedly meant to be a good religious American. To discuss this topic today I have with me Associate Professor David Feltmate, the author of a fantastic new work entitled, Drawn to the Gods: Religion and Humour in the Simpsons, South Park and Family Guy. Dave is Associate Professor of Sociology at Auburn University at Montgomery. He received his PhD in Religious Studies from the University of Waterloo in 2011. His research areas include the Sociology of Religion, religion in popular culture, humour studies, social theory, new religious movements and religions and family.

  • South Park's Satan: Sympathetic
SOUTH PARK’S SATAN: SYMPATHETIC CHARACTER AND CRITICAL CULTURAL MIRROR by Joshua Casper A thesis proposal submitted to the faculty of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Religious Studies Charlotte 2020 Approved by: _________________________ Dr. Sean McCloud _________________________ Dr. Alexandra Kaloyanides _________________________ Dr. Eric Hoenes Del Pinal ii ©2020 Joshua Casper ALL RIGHTS RESERVED iii ABSTRACT JOSHUA CASPER. South Park Satan: Sympathetic Character and Critical Cultural Mirror. (Under the Direction of DR. SEAN MCCLOUD) In this thesis, I argue that Satan in South Park is portrayed as a sympathetic character who acts as both a role model of individuality and responsibility in a manner that supports what religious studies scholar David Feltmate refers to as the "unseen order" proffered by the show's creators. I will support this argument through three case studies that compares Satan to other prominent South Park characters: Jesus, Saddam Hussein, and Mr. Garrison. This thesis engages with several different fields of scholarly work, including religious studies, media studies, and popular culture studies. While this work is influenced by such scholarship, the main subject, South Park’s Satan, has not been the focus of any work on religion, media, and popular culture broadly, or scholarship on South Park specifically. In this manner, I hope to add to the existing literature on South Park and religion and popular culture studies. I will discuss Lisle Dalton, Eric Greene, Jane Iwamura, David Feltmate, and Scott Poole and show how they will help me set up the main arguments of my analysis.
