CHINA SUMMER PROGRAM JUNE 15 - JULY 4 2016

The China Summer Program offers participants the opportunity to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and tradition through extensive travel to different regions and diverse sites throughout the country. During the program we will peel back the layers of China’s incredibly rich and layered history, revealing the roots of one of the world’s oldest building traditions. From Hong Kong to , participants will experience life within the walls of the ancient and medieval cities, explore the Classical gardens of Suzhou and Tongli, noted by the thirteenth century Venetian explorer and merchant, Marco Polo for their beauty and technological innovations.

Program Highlights*: § Hong Kong & Macau: Explore the relationship between nature and the man made, examining the ways in which the traditional built environment relates to the contemporary city. § Shanghai: Discussion of Western Classical buildings along the Bund. Guided tour of Jin Mao Tower, the 88-story skyscraper by Skidmore Owings & Merrill, which draws on traditional Chinese architecture motifs in the form of a tiered pagoda. Walking tour of Xintandi, which includes entry into the Museum of the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, and the reconstructed shikumen (stone gate) houses that represent the typical traditional courtyard house of Shanghai. § Suzhou & Tongli: Site visits include entry into UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Lingering Garden and Humble Administrator’s Garden as well as visits to Tiger Hill and exploration of the urban network of streets-canals-bridges of these two cities. § Nanjing: Visit the traditional housing typical of Nanjing including Ninety-Nine and a Half Houses, as well as temple architecture such as the Confucius Temple as well as a visit to the Mausoleum of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. § Pingyao: Immersion in the banking district. The visit includes site visits within the city from both the ground and above from the intact city wall. § Beijing: Visits include the imperial grounds of the , the , Temple of Heaven, Temple of Earth and the as well as visits to the traditional hutongs (courtyard housing) typical of Beijing. The tour will culminate with a climb up the Great Wall.
