Circumambulation in Indian Pilgrimage: Meaning And
232 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC & ENGINEERING RESEARCH, VOLUME 12, ISSUE 1, JANUARY-2021 ISSN 2229-5518 Circumambulation in Indian pilgrimage: Meaning and manifestation Santosh Kumar Abstract— Our ancient literature is full of examples where pilgrimage became an immensely popular way of achieving spiritual aims while walking. In India, many communities have attached spiritual importance to particular places or to the place where people feel a spiritual awakening. Circumambulation (pradakshina) around that sacred place becomes the key point of prayer and offering. All these circumambulation spaces are associated with the shrines or sacred places referring to auspicious symbolism. In Indian tradition, circumambulation has been practice in multiple scales ranging from a deity or tree to sacred hill, river, and city. The spatial character of the path, route, and street, shift from an inside dwelling to outside in nature or city, depending upon the central symbolism. The experience of the space while walking through sacred space remodel people's mental and physical character. As a result, not only the sacred space but their design and physical characteristics can be both meaningful and valuable to the public. This research has been done by exploring in two stage to finalize the conclusion, In which First stage will involve a literature exploration of Hindu and Buddhist scripture to understand the meaning and significance of circumambulation and in second, will investigate the architectural manifestation of various element in circumambulatory which help to attain its meaning and true purpose. Satha dhUshaNi is recognized as “a polemical classic of VisihtAdhvaitha VedAntha devoted to the criticism of Advaitha VedAntha”. The most logical and scholastic/authoritative arguments advanced by Swamy Desikan sadagopan.org in the sixty Six VaadhAs of Satha dhUshaNi refute the untenability of central doctrines of Advaitha VedAntha along the lines elaborated by AchArya RaamAnuja in His magnum Opus, Sri BhAshyam. One of the central doctrines of Adhvaitha VedAntha is: “Brahman is pure consciousness and is devoid of all attributes /determinations (nirvisEsham)”. Brahman constitutes the sole reality and everything else is illusory. Through his Sixty Six VaadhAs, Swamy Desikan refutes soundly these core doctrines. Through the use of a sound dialectical method, Swamy Desikan evaluates the Advaitha and VisishtAdhvaitha VedAnthas rigorously and establishes that the latter is the sounder one. The advaitha vEdAntha of pre-desika period is presented here and then the Darsanam of AchArya RaamAnuja is presented. As Dr. S.M.S. Chari has observed, we are the beneficiaries of understanding the two Vedanthic systems “expounded by two great master minds- Sankara and RaamAnuja” through Satha dhUshaNi. -

THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH AND THE NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS: TOWARDS THEOLOGICAL UNDERSTANDING JOHN A. SALIBA, S.J. University of Detroit OR MORE than a decade Western society, in particular the United FStates of America,1 has seen the rise and proliferation of religious and spiritual groups which the public has undiscerningly and indiscriminately labeled "cults." Many of the adherents of these new groups have come from the background of the traditional Christian churches. Most of them, by abandoning the beliefs and practices of their forefathers, have passed a negative judgment on the Christian Church and its relevance to contemporary life. The so-called cults have often been in the public eye because of the legal actions and Congressional investigations instigated by anticult organizations. Anguished parents, whose children have be come cult members, have turned to self-styled déprogrammera who have at times operated outside both civil and moral law. Yet the mainline Christian response to the new religions can, with few exceptions, be categorized as one of neglect and apathy. Though the churches have made extensive efforts to come to grips with the cultural upheavals of the mid-1960's,2 their attempts to meet the challenge of the cults have, on the whole, been slow, sporadic, and superficial. Many Christians, theologians included, have failed to grasp the significance of the new religious movements, which are already leaving an impact on society at large and on Christianity itself. It is unfortunate that we still lack a systematic treatment of the theological implications of these movements. 1 Buddhism, Diversity and ‘Race’: Multiculturalism and Western convert Buddhist movements in East London – a qualitative study Thesis submitted by Sharon Elizabeth SMITH Goldsmiths’ College, University of London in partial fulfilment of the requirements for degree of PhD History 2 DECLARATION I hereby declare that the work set out in this thesis for PhD History is entirely my own Sharon Elizabeth SMITH 3 ABSTRACT This study considers the development of convert Buddhism in multicultural environments. Its focus is on the encounters of people of colour (defined for the purposes of this study as people of African, Asian and Caribbean descent) with Western convert Buddhist movements, which tend to be predominantly white and middle-class. The study uses an ethnographic case study approach informed by feminist epistemologies. The case-studies are of two of the largest Western convert Buddhist movements in the UK – the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) and Sōka Gakkai International-UK (SGI-UK) – and focus on their branches in the multicultural inner-city location of East London. The findings suggest that most Buddhists of colour in these movements come from the second generation of the diaspora. For the FWBO, there is an apparently hegemonic discourse of middle-class whiteness that people of colour and working class members of this movement have to negotiate as part of their involvement. In contrast, for SGI-UK, the ethos is one of a moral cosmopolitanism that encourages intercultural dialogue thus facilitating the involvement of a considerably more multicultural and international following. People of colour find that their practices of the techniques of the self provided by each movement enable them to feel more empowered in relation to their quotidian experience of racisms and racialisation, as well as encouraging them in a more anti-essentialist approach to identity that sees it as fluid and contingent.
