Using recent data on sales, prices and product characteris- tics of new passenger vehicles sold in Europe’s seven largest markets during years 2000 through 2005, I estimate a demand function us- ing two approaches to the differentiated product demand estimation: the Logit and the Nested Logit. For the Nested Logit model, I use nests that roughly correspond to segmentation used in the automo- bile industry. I then compare substitution patterns resulting from Logit and Nested Logit specifications across countries and segments. FINDINGS. Regression outcomes demonstrate strong evidence of seg- mentation. Consumer preferences are strongly correlated for the most basic as well as for the luxury and sports segments, whereas core seg- ments display more heterogeneity. While car size preference varies across countries, Europeans typically like high and wide cars and dis- like long cars. Engine performance appreciation appears to have a curved shape: consumers are willing to pay for a fast car but at a de- creasing rate. Compared to their neighbors, Germans shop the most for premium brands yet display strongest price sensitivity, whereas most concerned about fuel consumption are the Brits. Aside from a few exceptions, all elasticities are within expected range, substitu- tion patterns vary mainly across segments but follow a similar pattern across countries. -

After consulting registered competitors, the Panel has added a 7th round on 27/6/15 at WSID in Sydney. The discipline of Rallysprinting is considered strategically important by the Rally Panel, as it is our number one gateway event for new competitors. The State championship is back. The panel has devoted much energy and resources into this area, and the 2015 championship is showing great signs. Bega has returned for 2015, as well as a new event in Glen Innes, which saw 51 entries on 28/3/15. The panel is aware of another landmark state championship event which will most likely return for 2016, and are very excited by that. We look forward to releasing the 2016 calendar later in the year. The DRS in 2015 has been split into 2, which allows for 4WD turbo cars. Whilst numbers in the DRS4 component are up, the participation in the 2WD sections is lower than last year at this stage. Number in Hyundai series are also down, but we are aware of at least 3 crews who are planning on contesting the later rounds. -

Coming to BBC Knowledge this February, first on Foxtel The boys are back with an all new season of Top Gear, jam-packed with all of the thrills and spills we have come to expect from the world’s favourite car show. Top Gear Series 21 will premiere Sunday February 9 at 8.30pm on BBC Knowledge. In this new series, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May embark on a huge road trip across Ukraine in three small cars with even smaller engines. They re-live the glory days of the 1980s in three ‘classic’ hot hatchbacks, and have a ham-fisted crack at making a public safety film for the government. There’s also the new Alfa 4C sports car racing a very unusual quad bike, the sensational McLaren P1 tearing a strip off Belgium, an insane six-wheeled Mercedes in the desert, and the unusual sight of James May in a Caterham. And as if that wasn’t enough, the series includes a mad-capped two-part adventure across the wilds of Burma as the presenters take three lorries on what could be Top Gear’s toughest challenge to date. Fan favourite, ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car’ will return to our screens once again, with Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville taking to the track in the first episode of the new series. Investigation into the accident of Richard Hammond Accident involving RICHARD HAMMOND (RH) On 20 SEPTEMBER 2006 At Elvington Airfield, Halifax Way, Elvington YO41 4AU SUMMARY 1. The BBC Top Gear programme production team had arranged for Richard Hammond (RH) to drive Primetime Land Speed Engineering’s Vampire jet car at Elvington Airfield, near York, on Wednesday 20th September 2006. Vampire, driven by Colin Fallows (CF), was the current holder of the Outright British Land Speed record at 300.3 mph. 2. Runs were to be carried out in only one direction along a pre-set course on the Elvington runway. Vampire’s speed was to be recorded using GPS satellite telemetry. The intention was to record the maximum speed, not to measure an average speed over a measured course, and for RH to describe how it felt. 3. During the Wednesday morning RH was instructed how to drive Vampire by Primetime’s principals, Mark Newby (MN) and CF. Starting at about 1 p.m., he completed a series of 6 runs with increasing jet power and at increasing speed. The jet afterburner was used on runs 4 to 6, but runs 4 and 5 were intentionally aborted early. 4. The 6th run took place at just before 5 p.m. and a maximum speed of 314 mph was achieved. This speed was not disclosed to RH. 5. Although the shoot was scheduled to end at 5 p.m., it was decided to apply for an extension to 5:30 p.m. to allow for one final run to secure more TV footage of Vampire running with the after burner lit. -
