Without a strategy and without institutional leadership to guide and coordinate efforts to address malnutrition, isolated, piecemeal efforts across various programs resulted. This situation created ambiguity in the objectives of such efforts and led to confusion among various development partners. In late 2004, a new opportunity emerged for developing a comprehensive approach to address malnutrition when the federal government agreed to put in place such a strategy as part of the groundwork for the preparation of the second phase of Sustainable Development and Poverty Reduction Program, which is now called the Plan for Accelerated and Sustained Development to End Poverty - 2005/06-2009/10. At that time, the Council of Ministers of the federal government gave the responsibility for coordinating overall nutrition activities in the country to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MOARD), and established its initial task as being the development of an NNS. Within MOARD, the Food Security Coordination Bureau (FSCB) was assigned the task of formulating the strategy. The FSCB established a national steering committee to draft the NNS in order that the Strategy be submitted to the Council of Ministers for approval in the third quarter of 2005. In addition to MOARD, the steering committee included government representatives from the Ministry of Health (Family Health Department), the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, and the Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission. Several representatives from Ethiopia’s development partners also sat on the NNS steering committee – the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Bank, the United States Agency for International Development, the European Union, and the Canadian International Development Agency. Under the overall oversight of the head of the FSCB, Berhane Gizaw, the steering committee was chaired by Beyene Haile. The UNICEF representative to the committee, Iqbal Kabir, served as secretary. MOARD approached UNICEF-Ethiopia to solicit technical assistance to facilitate the development of the NSS, particularly through the provision of both local and international experts to guide and contribute broader perspectives to the process. UNICEF agreed to do so and requested the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) to provide such assistance and to coordinate the efforts of local experts in contributing to the formulation of the NNS. In early May 2005, IFPRI research, Todd Benson, working with the assistance of Urban Jonsson, senior UNICEF nutrition advisor, drew up terms of reference for the technical assistance to the NNS steering committee. Drawing from the global conceptual framework of the causes of child malnutrition (Figure 1.2), it was proposed that a team of local experts be assembled to develop background documents on the basic and the three underlying causes of malnutrition in Ethiopia. These background papers would then be used to develop a detailed framework for the NNS itself. This document is a compilation of these background papers. By early June 2005, eight local experts had been hired using resources provided by UNICEF-Ethiopia. They were assigned the following topics and tasks: · Solomon Bellete – the basic causes of malnutrition in Ethiopia. · Demese Chanyalew – food insecurity as an underlying cause of malnutrition. · Tefera Belachew – improper care as an underlying cause of malnutrition. · Ayele Gebremariam, Abera Kumie, Damene Hailemariam, and Fikru Tesfaye – poor health services and an unhygienic environment as underlying causes of malnutrition. i · Bantirgu Hailemariam coordinated the efforts of all of the other experts and managed day-to-day relations and logistics with the NNS steering committee and with UNICEF-Ethiopia. Working with Dr. Benson’s supervision, the experts carried out extensive literature reviews and participated in field trips to several regions to meet with NNS stakeholders at regional and woreda levels. Assistance was also received from the World Bank. As part of this effort, a World Bank consultant, Eleonora Genovese, compiled an inventory of nutrition- focused programs and projects in Ethiopia. On 8 August 2005, a half-day workshop was held in Addis Ababa at which the team of experts presented overviews of the initial drafts of the background documents they were preparing. Extensive comments on the papers were received from the approximately 50 participants at the workshop. These were then used by the authors to develop the final versions presented in this volume. By late August 2005, a detailed NNS framework document was submitted to the NNS steering committee. The NNS steering committee used this framework document to draft the Strategy document itself. The framework document was written by Todd Benson working closely with the team of local experts. It is available as a companion document to this edited volume. The NNS steering committee finalized a draft Strategy document by late September 2005. After disseminating it widely for comment at federal and regional levels, a full-day workshop was held in Addis Ababa in mid-November to review the draft Strategy in preparation for its submittal for approval to the Council of Ministers. The work of the experts ended with the successful conclusion of this workshop. In finalizing these papers for wider dissemination, we gratefully acknowledge the editorial efforts of Noora-Lisa Aberman of IFPRI and Kevin Pepper, an intern with UNICEF- Ethiopia. Harold Alderman of the World Bank reviewed early drafts and made important suggestions to strengthen all of them. We also thank the national steering committee for the NNS for the comments its members provided on these papers and the spirited dialogue they provided in discussing the NNS framework document. In particular, we appreciate the leadership provided by Beyene Haile in guiding the NNS formulation process. The Silte of southern Ethiopia is among those ethnic groups with their own conflict resolution mechanism. The main purpose of this study is to explore the indigenous institutions of conflict resolution among the Silte people of southern Ethiopia. This study has employed a qualitative research to meet the stated objectives of the study. To achieve the above objectives, the study collected primary data from different informants in Silte Woreda by employing such qualitative data collection techniques as an interview, focus group discussions and observation. The secondary data sources were obtained from published and unpublished government documents; such as books and magazine and. The finding of this research reveals that the indigenous conflict resolution institution is one of the ways of resolving conflict in the study area. The study also came up with the major causes of conflict in the study area and the indigenous means to resolve them through the Baliq conflict resolution institution.

    Rural poverty in Ethiopia Source: IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development) Location: http://www.ruralpovertyportal.org/web/guest/country/home/tags/ethiopia An agrarian society in a land of drought In one of the world’s poorest countries, where about 44 per cent of the population lives under the poverty line, more than 12 million people are chronically or at least periodically food insecure. Most of them live in rural areas. More than eight out of ten Ethiopians depend on agriculture as their main livelihood. But agricultural production is extremely vulnerable both to climatic conditions and to the disruptive impact of war and civil conflict. The increased incidence and severity of drought have caused major fluctuations in agricultural and economic growth. The persistent lack of rainfall is a major factor in rural poverty. Recurring droughts leave poor farming families without food crops, causing periodic famines. People lack coping mechanisms for facing drought-induced famines, and contingency planning is inadequate. The situation worsened recently because of sharp increases in the prices of food and fertilizers on world markets, which made it more difficult for poor households in Ethiopia, as elsewhere, to secure adequate food supplies. Who are Ethiopia’s rural poor people? The largest group of poor people in Ethiopia is composed of small-scale farmers. Most rural households live on a daily per capita income of less than US$0.50. More than half of the country’s 12 million smallholders have 1 hectare or less of land. Their productivity is low and they are vulnerable to drought and other adverse natural conditions.

Read Full License Page 1/27 Abstract Background Ethiopia is endowed with a diverse set of oral and faunal resources that are useful to human beings in one or another ways. A faunal resource has played a signicant role in human life from the earliest days of recorded history for medicinal purposes to treat different ailments and is still common in many parts of the world. Methods A eld survey was carried out in Diguna Fango district from March 2021 to June 2021 by personal interviews through semi- structured questionnaires and open group discussions. Results Altogether 200 (125 male and 75 female) informants provided information regarding the therapeutic uses of different animal parts/products. A total of 39 animal parts/products used for the treatment of 159 different ailments were identied. Mammals occupied the highest use report 26(66.67%), followed by arthropods 5(12.81%) and avian species 4(10.26%). Further, some most popular zootherapeutic animals i.e. Phacochoerus africanus, Hystrix cristata, Bos taurus, Equus africanus asinus, Homo sapiens, etc. were used to treat more than three different ailments. Anemia, asthma, bone fractures, cold, evil eye, fever, pleurisy, rheumatism, skin disease, and stomach pain were some of the frequently occurring ailments.

    SNNPR Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Demography and Health Aynalem Adugna, July 2014 www.EthioDemographyAndHealth.Org 2 SNNPR is one of the largest regions in Ethiopia, accounting for more than 10 percent of the country’s land area [1]. The mid-2008 population is estimated at nearly 16,000,000; almost a fifth of the country’s population. With less than one in tenth of its population (8.9%) living in urban areas in 2008 the region is overwhelmingly rural. "The region is divided into 13 administrative zones, 133 Woredas and 3512 Kebeles, and its capital is Awassa." [1] "The SNNPR is an extremely ethnically diverse region of Ethiopia, inhabited by more than 80 ethnic groups, of which over 45 (or 56 percent) are indigenous to the region (CSA 1996). These ethnic groups are distinguished by different languages, cultures, and socioeconomic organizations. Although none of the indigenous ethnic groups dominates the ethnic makeup of the national population, there is a considerable ethnic imbalance within the region. The largest ethnic groups in the SNNPR are the Sidama (17.6 percent), Wolayta (11.7 percent), Gurage (8.8 percent), Hadiya (8.4 percent), Selite (7.1 percent), Gamo (6.7 percent), Keffa (5.3 percent), Gedeo (4.4 percent), and Kembata (4.3 percent) …. While the Sidama are the largest ethnic group in the region, each ethnic group is numerically dominant in its respective administrative zone, and there are large minority ethnic groups in each zone. The languages spoken in the SNNPR can be classified into four linguistic families: Cushitic, Nilotic, Omotic, and Semitic.
