Its primary purpose is to present a line of interpretative thought for Heitor Villa-Lobos’s piano compositions, emphasizing significant elements reflective of the folk and popular culture of Brazil that the composer integrates with stylistic features influenced by European art music traditions. It highlights Villa-Lobos’s adaptation of characteristic Brazilian dances, dance rhythms, melodies, direct quotations, and fragments of folk and popular tunes in Choros no. 5 (Alma Brasileira) and Bachianas Brasileiras no. 4 (Brazilian Bachianas no. 4). In the latter work, this study also considers the composer’s blend of Brazilian-based material with elements inspired by the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. In addition to stylistic analyses, an examination of the composer’s influences, intentions, and methods is fundamental to this study. This exploration offers insights into Villa-Lobos’s piano music and clarifies possible misinterpretations generated by lack of information about the composer’s musical contexts and his desires to represent Brazilian culture in his music. This discussion is intended to provide a basis for performing or interpretive solutions to the musical (including rhythmic and technical) complexities created by the use of folk and popular ideas in this repertoire. Divided into four chapters, this document begins with a brief overview of Villa- Lobos’s life and overall works in the first chapter. The second chapter contains a brief overview of the entire set of Choros with a focused examination of Choros no. 5. The third chapter discusses Villa-Lobos’s mixture of neoclassical and Brazilian elements within the set Bachianas Brasileiras, specifically no. 4, for piano. Descriptions and interpretations of the selected works are offered in the second and third chapters. The fourth chapter presents the conclusion of this research. • PAUL HINDEMITH (1895-1963) in the Later Years of His Life Paul Hindemith Had Become a Somewhat Neglected Figure
TEMPO A QUARTERLY REVIEW OF MODERN MUSIC Edited by Colin Mason © 1964 by Boosey & Hawkes Music Publishers Ltd. PAUL HINDEMITH (1895-1963) In the later years of his life Paul Hindemith had become a somewhat neglected figure. Once ranked with Stravinsky and Bartok among the most stimulating experimenters of the 1920s, he later began to lose his hold on the public, and his influence on younger composers declined, especially after 1945, when serialism started to spread widely, leaving him very much isolated in his hostility to it. Now that that issue no longer greatly agitates the musical world, it is becom- ing possible to assess more clearly the importance and individuality of his con- tribution to 20th-century music. An obvious comparison is with his compatriot of a generation earlier, Max Reger, who was similarly prolific, and in his early days was reckoned daring, but whose work later revealed an academic streak. In Hindemith one might call it rather an intellectual, rational and philosophical streak, not fatal but injurious to the spontaneous play of his musical imagination. As early as 193 1 he wrote an oratorio Das Unaufhorliche, to a text by Gottfried Benn which mocks at human illusions of what is enduring, including (besides learning, science, religion and love) art. Hindemith's choice of such a subject seems to have been symptomatic of some scepticism on his own part about art, and although his innate creative musical genius could not be repressed, it was made to struggle for survival against the theoretical restraints that he insisted on imposing upon it.

5 Stages for Teaching Alberto Ginastera's Twelve American Preludes Qiwen Wan First-year DMA in Piano Pedagogy University of South Carolina Hello everyone, my name is Qiwen Wan. I am a first-year doctoral student in piano pedagogy major at the University of South Carolina. I am really glad to be here and thanks to SCMTA to allow me to present online under this circumstance. The topiC of my lightning talk is 5 stages for teaChing Alberto Ginastera's Twelve AmeriCan Preludes. First, please let me introduce this colleCtion. Twelve AmeriCan Preludes is composed by Alberto Ginastera, who is known as one of the most important South AmeriCan composers of the 20th century. It was published in two volumes in 1944. In this colleCtion, there are 12 short piano pieCes eaCh about one minute in length. Every prelude has a title, tempo and metronome marking, and eaCh presents a different charaCter or purpose for study. There are two pieCes that focus on a speCifiC teChnique, titled Accents, and Octaves. No. 5 and 12 are titled with PentatoniC Minor and Major Modes. Triste, Creole Dance, Vidala, and Pastorale display folk influences. The remaining four pieCes pay tribute to other 20th-Century AmeriCan composers. This set of preludes is an attraCtive output for piano that skillfully combines folk Argentine rhythms and Colors with modern composing teChniques. Twelve American Preludes is a great contemporary composition for late-intermediate to early-advanced students. In The Pianist’s Guide to Standard Teaching and Performing Literature, Dr. Jane Magrath uses a 10-level system to list the pieCes from this colleCtion in different levels.

  • I Knew That Music Was My Language, That Music Would Take Me to See the World, Would Take Me to Other Lands
"I knew that music was my language, that music would take me to see the world, would take me to other lands. For I thought there was the music of the earth and the music from heaven." Gil, about his childhood in the city where he lived, in Bahia, where he used to race to the first clarinet sound of the band, which started the religious celebrations, and seemed to invade everything. His career began with the accordion, still in the 50s, inspired by Luiz Gonzaga, the sound of the radio and the religious parades in town. Within the Northeast he explored a folk country sound, until Joao Gilberto emerges, the bossa nova, as well as Dorival Caymmi, with its coastal beach sound, so different from that world of wilderness he was used to. Influenced, Gil leaves aside the accordion and holds the guitar, then the electric guitar, which harbors the particular harmonies of his work until today. Since his early songs he portrayed his country, and his musicianship took very personal rhythmic and melodic forms. His first LP, “Louvação” (Worship) , released in 1967, concentrated his particular ways of translating regional components into music, as seen in the renown songs Louvação, Procissão, Roda and Viramundo. In 1963 after meeting his friend Caetano Veloso at the University of Bahia, Gil begins with Caetano a partnership and a movement that contemplated and internationalized music, theater, visual arts, cinema and all of Brazilian art. The so-called Tropicália or Tropicalist movement, involves talented and plural artists such as Gal Costa, Tom Ze, Duprat, José Capinam, Torquato Neto, Rogério Duarte, Nara Leão and others.
