Issue 1 | 22nd September 2017

Dear Parents,

The Summer seems to have sped by but it was a great joy to see so many happy children come buzzing through the gates on the first morning of term.

May I offer a particularly warm welcome all our new parents. It was wonderful to see so many at the Parents’ Drinks Reception and we are looking forward to building strong relationships with you over the course of this term.

The children all seem to be settling in well and enjoying the activities on offer. Those of you new to the school will soon appreciate that we try to pack a lot of activity into our lives here.

Announcing our New Head of School and Prefects

In Assembly on Monday, Mrs Waite announced that Kit Temperley has been appointed as Head of School and Zooey Child as Deputy Head of School for this academic year. Both boys were presented with their new ties and have both carried out their first official duty, presenting to our prospective parents at Open Morning this morning. Kit and Zooey will be supported by the following Prefects: Joshua Woolaghan, Joseph O’Neil, William Enskat and Christian Bulmer. More Prefect appointments will be made during the course of the term. Well done, boys!

L6 visit to the Bank of and St Paul’s Cathedral

The new Senior pupils in Lower 6th (Year 7) visited London last Friday. We travelled up by train from and then walked to St. Paul's Cathedral along the South Bank. Along the way we stopped to find out more about the sites we were walking past, such as Ernie's Beach, the Oxo Tower, Millennium Bridge and the Fire Fighters Memorial. At St. Pauls' we had a guided tour, which included visiting areas of the Cathedral normally off limits to visits such as the secret staircase used in the Harry Potter films. After a picnic lunch in the churchyard we then headed off down Cheapside to the Bank of England. At the bank the pupils enjoyed looking around the museum and made the most of the interactive exhibits. They enjoyed trying to lift up a real gold bar worth over £390,000. Then a lecture about the role of the Bank of England in keeping the finances of the country on an even keel was delivered to the pupils. Our route back to Waterloo took us past The Monument to the Great Fire of London, London Bridge, Southwark Cathedral, the Golden Hinde, the Globe and Tate Modern. All in all the children had a great day and lots of exercise, as our total walking distance for the day was over 8 miles! Mrs J Dicker

Fencing success for Alexi and Kit

Congratulations to Alexi (Form 2) and Kit (Form 1) who both walked away with medals having competed at the Cobham Fencing Club Championships at Notre Dame School last Sunday. The club is represented by pupils from a variety of London and day schools. More than 55 pupils took part in the Electric Foil Championships and Alexi walked away with 7th place in the Under 10's category, whilst Kit was awarded a medal for his stamina and bravery as the youngest competing member. We look forward to hearing more from these two in the future!

Celebrating Roald Dahl Day

Thank you to all the staff who participated in the Roald Dahl Quiz, hosted by Miss Slatter, in assembly. The children were able to answer questions about Roald Dahl's works and life whilst receiving lots of pluses for correct answers!

• Did you know that Roald Dahl's favourite book was The BFG? • Did you know that one of his favourite pastimes, other than writing, was photography?

Alfred Huberman Award - Prizes presented to Lower Sixth pupils

Two Lower Sixth pupils, Thomas Twydell-Satterly (1st Prize) and Theodore Tyler-Low (Highly Commended) have been announced as winners of the national Alfred Huberman writing project. Pupils entered the competition as part of their work on the Arthur Ransome theme in IT & Art.

The award was established in memory of Alfred Huberman - who as a child was sent to a Polish concentration camp - to encourage young people to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and ensure that its horrors are never forgotten.

More than 500 entries were received this year, and the judges described Thomas' words as particularly moving. Mrs S Cary

First News – First Happy Birthday

The children love reading First News which we have delivered to school and Mrs Waite often refers to the child-friendly articles in Assembly. We are, therefore, very pleased to have been offered the opportunity this year for every pupil in Form 2 to receive their own copy of First News on their ninth birthday. Théo had the honour of having the first birthday of the academic year and received his copy of First News on his birthday! We hope you enjoy reading First News! Mrs J Dicker

Debate Club and Senior Book Club

Evelyn Hall’s summary of Voltaire’s thesis: ‘I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it’ continues to be at the core of Debate Club.

We welcomed a number of new members from 4A & B and will be happy to include any others who want to join us next week. We will be preparing for a school debate competition before half term and then choosing a team to represent Milbourne in the upcoming Rotary Youth Speaks first round which will probably take place in November.

Once a month, instead of Debate Club I will welcome anyone from the senior school to a Senior Book Club to follow on from Chatterbooks. This term, Senior Book Club will be on September 28th, Wednesday October 18th (at break time) and November 30th. We will start back next term with Book Club on 11th January. Mrs C Croom

Congratulations to Alexi Walder (Form 2) and Kit Walder (Form 1) who both walked away with medals having competed at the Cobham Fencing Club Championships at Notre Dame School last Sunday. The club is represented by pupils from a variety of London and Surrey day schools. More than 5 5 pupils took part in the electric foil

Dear Parents,

All the children have made a fantastic start to the new school year and I am delighted to be a part of the thriving, positive and special community that is Milbourne Lodge School. It has been lovely to witness the children's excellent attitude and great enthusiasm towards their learning already. Every classroom has been a hive of activity and I have enjoyed dropping in to see all their hard work.

It has been a pleasure to meet so many of you already and I am looking forward to seeing you all at the Pre-Prep Curriculum Evening on Monday.

If you have any questions at any time please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Mrs Sophie Elmer Head of Pre-Prep

Year 1 visit to ‘The Night Pirates’ As part of the English curriculum in Pre-Prep, the year 1 children enjoyed a trip to The Rose Theatre to watch The Night Pirates. It was a fantastic way to introduce the children to this action-packed adventure story with Tom, Captain Patch and the rough, tough, girl pirates. There was plenty of audience participation to engage the children and they all came out of the theatre feeling part of Tom's pirate crew!

Since returning to the classroom, the children have enjoyed writing character descriptions and retelling the story using their own words. A fantastic, swash-buckling effort from all! Mrs Franklin-Mitchell

Welcome to Reception

We are so happy to welcome our new Reception classes to Milbourne Lodge. The children have all made an excellent start and have settled very well into their new class. It has been a busy few weeks and the children have engaged in a range of exciting activities including role play, outdoor learning and interactive music lessons.

Mrs Petzer and Mr Davies

Football

U8 v Parkside – Tuesday 19th September The boys played really well in this tight game and both teams had real chances to win. It was pleasing to see the way the boys fought from the first whistle to the last. On this performance the boys should look forward to the forthcoming fixtures with relish.

U10D v Northcote Lodge – Friday 15th September This was a great game with our team winning 3 -2. The game ebbed and flowed but the boys showed enormous passion and drive throughout the match. Phoenix made some great runs into the box and was unlucky not to score. William, our goalkeeper, played like a sweeper for the whole game which cut down on their scoring chances. Special mention has to go to Tom P as he must have covered every inch of grass in this game. Our goal scorers were Zain (2) and Rowan (1). Mr Drummond

U10A v Parkside – Tuesday 19th September The U10A’s welcomed Parkside School for their first home game of the season. After last weeks close loss, the U10 side were determined to bounce back with a win. From the start, Milbourne Lodge started to assert their dominance and looked hungry to score goals. Parkside’s skilled playmakers were placed under pressure by the defensive partnership of Dante and Noah. The attacking combination of Jason, Harry and Jacob caused havoc throughout the game. Overall, a successful performance and we look forward to building momentum throughout the season.

U10B v Parkside - Tuesday 19th September As soon as the whistle blew at the start of the game, Milbourne Lodge played with conviction to win the ball back and take control of the game. Henry produced a fantastic performance in defence, winning the ball and passing it down field, to unleash the Milbourne midfielders. Parkside put up an excellent defensive performance but were unable to prevent striker Julian from scoring 4 very impressive goals. An imposing performance which the team can be proud of.

U10C v Parkside - Tuesday 19th September The U10C match against Parkside didn’t disappoint in terms of entertainment and it was clear from the outset that Milbourne were the stronger team on this occasion. Defenders Freddie-Sebastian Davies and Lucas Dean had little to do in the first half with the majority of play in the oppositions half. By half-time Milbourne were 3 – 0 up. However, a tenacious Parkside team managed to slip the ball past the Milbourne goalkeeper to score one of their own. This didn’t stop the real flow of play and Milbourne then managed to slot 4 more past the Parkside goalkeeper with the final score 7-1. An excellent team effort with no less than 6 goals from James Capon and one from Zain Ali. Special mention to Seth Slocombe who dominated midfield play and assisted with numerous goals.

U10D v Parkside - Tuesday 19th September Throughout the game the boys played with great intensity and there were a number great runs through the middle of the pitch by both Freddies and also Lucas. We scored late on in

the first half when Freddie Hawkins followed up his shot which their goalkeeper pushed onto the post and Freddie slotted it home before the goalkeeper could collect the ball. There is still plenty to work on but with their great work ethic the boys should continue to have a good season. Mr C Edwards

Congratulations to the U13 Football Team

The U13 Football Team played in the Hoe Bridge 6 a side Football Tournament on Saturday 9th September. It was the first fixture of the year and the boys played extremely well and won Runner’s Up Medals - narrowly missing out on the win! Well played boys!

Netball

The Middle girls and Senior girls played City of London Freemen's School in a Netball match last week. Sonja Thurow played in the centre position for the Senior girls' team and moved the ball towards Milbourne's goal effectively, resulting in a 13-5 win to the Milbourne girls. Olivia Marshall was also a valued member of the team due to some fantastic clearances from the defending end. The middle girls also played hard and with true Milbourne spirit. They could be heard shouting words of encouragement to each other. Scarlett Sleeman had some super shots on goal and scored for Milbourne. Well done to both teams. Miss Slatter

Music Notices

Instrumental Lessons The new instrumental timetable is up and running and we hope that it is working for all pupils having instrumental lessons. If you would like your child to take up music lessons in school, kindly complete an ‘Instrumental Request Form’ available from the office and return it to the Music Department. Please be aware that your child may need to join a waiting list for some of the more popular instruments. There is already a waiting list for pre-prep piano places. Please also note that we are not able to offer piano lessons to pupils who are still taking lessons with another teacher outside of school.

Junior and Senior Choirs There are places left in both choirs for any keen and committed singers who would like the opportunity to perform at school events such as the Dickensian Evening and the Carol Service. There is no need to complete a request form for this. Any new pupils wishing to join are welcome to speak to Miss Cobham and come along to a rehearsal.

Senior Choir, open to pupils in Form 3 upwards, rehearses on Tuesday lunch-times from 1.10 – 1.50pm Junior Choir, open to pupils in Forms 1 and 2, rehearses on Friday lunch-times from 1.10-1.50pm Instrumental Ensembles

Rehearsals for the Concert Band and String Ensemble have started up again this term. Any keen instrumentalists of approximately Grade 1 standard or above are eligible to join. Many of our younger pupils have been inspired to take up instruments having heard the groups play at previous concerts and events.

The Advanced Recorder Ensemble rehearses on a Wednesday lunchtime with Mrs Whitehouse. This group is by invitation and is aimed at keen recorder players in Forms 2, 3 and 4.

Please contact Miss Cobham if you would like to enquire about any of these ensembles.

New Instrumental Storage In order to cater for the growing number of pupils learning and playing instruments in school, a set of bespoke storage cupboards for musical instruments has been built over the summer, situated in the portacabin next to the music room. This way all musical instruments can be stored safely away when they are not in use for lessons or rehearsals. The portacabin should be open from early morning onwards to enable pupils to access the cupboards. Hopefully this will be a really useful new resource for the music department.

Morning Arrival – Prep pupils

In order to ease congestion for yourselves and our neighbours, if you have children in the Prep school it is advised that you consider using the ‘drop and go’ system at morning drop off.

Staff are on duty at Brendon Drive, the Church car park entrance and at the main school gate to ensure that children who are walking up to school on their own get safely across the roads and into school.

Parents entering the school site during the day

Apart from coming to watch home matches, if you have to come to school outside of the morning drop off or afternoon collection times, please press the button by the gate to gain admittance and then please report to the school office where staff will help you.

Parking Reminder

As is usual at this time of the year, please find our drop-off and parking arrangements explained below. This is particularly relevant for morning drop-off.

We particularly ask that parents RED do not park in the ‘drop-off’ zone Reception permit holders – see diagram blue section - as and other car park permit this area is specifically for parents holders of Prep school children to pull- PURPLE up, drop-off their children and PP1 & PP2 – exit via loop or then immediately drive away using the loop as the exit route. turn around in Brendon Cars parking in this area prevent Drive such a drop-off system working BLUE and cause congestion. Prep School drop off ONLY – Exit via loop For those parents who drive past GREEN Brendon Drive, to use either the PP1 & PP2 – exit by turning Church car park or to park round at the bottom of along the kerb by the church, can you please travel at a very slow speed Arbrook Lane as there are many children walking along Arbrook Lane towards school and they are not always visible to drivers.

Finally, can we please remind parents who park in Brendon Drive to (i) only park on one side of the road (ii) do not park across any part of residents' driveways (iii) do not park on the grass verge

At Milbourne Lodge, we are always mindful that the health and safety of our pupils is paramount and this includes the above times, when children are making their way to school.

Your co-operation is much appreciated.

Home Match Fixtures

Parents of children in forms 4A/4B, L6A/L6B and U6/M6 are reminded that after a home fixture the children must return to class for their last lesson. For these year groups the school day ends at 5.05pm. Mrs C Tilston
