Issue 1 | 22nd September 2017 Dear Parents, The Summer seems to have sped by but it was a great joy to see so many happy children come buzzing through the gates on the first morning of term. May I offer a particularly warm welcome all our new parents. It was wonderful to see so many at the Parents’ Drinks Reception and we are looking forward to building strong relationships with you over the course of this term. The children all seem to be settling in well and enjoying the activities on offer. Those of you new to the school will soon appreciate that we try to pack a lot of activity into our lives here. Judy Waite Head Announcing our New Head of School and Prefects In Assembly on Monday, Mrs Waite announced that Kit Temperley has been appointed as Head of School and Zooey Child as Deputy Head of School for this academic year. Both boys were presented with their new ties and have both carried out their first official duty, presenting to our prospective parents at Open Morning this morning. Kit and Zooey will be supported by the following Prefects: Joshua Woolaghan, Joseph O’Neil, William Enskat and Christian Bulmer. More Prefect appointments will be made during the course of the term. Well done, boys! L6 visit to the Bank of England and St Paul’s Cathedral The new Senior pupils in Lower 6th (Year 7) visited London last Friday. We travelled up by train from Claygate and then walked to St. Paul's Cathedral along the South Bank. Along the way we stopped to find out more about the sites we were walking past, such as Ernie's Beach, the Oxo Tower, Millennium Bridge and the Fire Fighters Memorial. At St. Pauls' we had a guided tour, which included visiting areas of the Cathedral normally off limits to visits such as the secret staircase used in the Harry Potter films. After a picnic lunch in the churchyard we then headed off down Cheapside to the Bank of England. At the bank the pupils enjoyed looking around the museum and made the most of the interactive exhibits. They enjoyed trying to lift up a real gold bar worth over £390,000. Then a lecture about the role of the Bank of England in keeping the finances of the country on an even keel was delivered to the pupils. Our route back to Waterloo took us past The Monument to the Great Fire of London, London Bridge, Southwark Cathedral, the Golden Hinde, the Globe and Tate Modern. All in all the children had a great day and lots of exercise, as our total walking distance for the day was over 8 miles! Mrs J Dicker Fencing success for Alexi and Kit Congratulations to Alexi (Form 2) and Kit (Form 1) who both walked away with medals having competed at the Cobham Fencing Club Championships at Notre Dame School last Sunday. The club is represented by pupils from a variety of London and Surrey day schools. More than 55 pupils took part in the Electric Foil Championships and Alexi walked away with 7th place in the Under 10's category, whilst Kit was awarded a medal for his stamina and bravery as the youngest competing member. We look forward to hearing more from these two in the future! Celebrating Roald Dahl Day Thank you to all the staff who participated in the Roald Dahl Quiz, hosted by Miss Slatter, in assembly. The children were able to answer questions about Roald Dahl's works and life whilst receiving lots of pluses for correct answers! • Did you know that Roald Dahl's favourite book was The BFG? • Did you know that one of his favourite pastimes, other than writing, was photography? Alfred Huberman Award - Prizes presented to Lower Sixth pupils Two Lower Sixth pupils, Thomas Twydell-Satterly (1st Prize) and Theodore Tyler-Low (Highly Commended) have been announced as winners of the national Alfred Huberman writing project. Pupils entered the competition as part of their work on the Arthur Ransome theme in IT & Art. The award was established in memory of Alfred Huberman - who as a child was sent to a Polish concentration camp - to encourage young people to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and ensure that its horrors are never forgotten. More than 500 entries were received this year, and the judges described Thomas' words as particularly moving. Mrs S Cary First News – First Happy Birthday The children love reading First News which we have delivered to school and Mrs Waite often refers to the child-friendly articles in Assembly. We are, therefore, very pleased to have been offered the opportunity this year for every pupil in Form 2 to receive their own copy of First News on their ninth birthday. Théo had the honour of having the first birthday of the academic year and received his copy of First News on his birthday! We hope you enjoy reading First News! Mrs J Dicker Debate Club and Senior Book Club Evelyn Hall’s summary of Voltaire’s thesis: ‘I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it’ continues to be at the core of Debate Club. We welcomed a number of new members from 4A & B and will be happy to include any others who want to join us next week. We will be preparing for a school debate competition before half term and then choosing a team to represent Milbourne in the upcoming Rotary Youth Speaks first round which will probably take place in November. Once a month, instead of Debate Club I will welcome anyone from the senior school to a Senior Book Club to follow on from Chatterbooks. This term, Senior Book Club will be on September 28th, Wednesday October 18th (at break time) and November 30th. We will start back next term with Book Club on 11th January. Mrs C Croom Congratulations to Alexi Walder (Form 2) and Kit Walder (Form 1) who both walked away with medals having competed at the Cobham Fencing Club Championships at Notre Dame School last Sunday. The club is represented by pupils from a variety of London and Surrey day schools. More than 5 5 pupils took part in the electric foil Dear Parents, All the children have made a fantastic start to the new school year and I am delighted to be a part of the thriving, positive and special community that is Milbourne Lodge School. It has been lovely to witness the children's excellent attitude and great enthusiasm towards their learning already. Every classroom has been a hive of activity and I have enjoyed dropping in to see all their hard work. It has been a pleasure to meet so many of you already and I am looking forward to seeing you all at the Pre-Prep Curriculum Evening on Monday. If you have any questions at any time please do not hesitate to contact me. Best wishes, Mrs Sophie Elmer Head of Pre-Prep Year 1 visit to ‘The Night Pirates’ As part of the English curriculum in Pre-Prep, the year 1 children enjoyed a trip to The Rose Theatre to watch The Night Pirates. It was a fantastic way to introduce the children to this action-packed adventure story with Tom, Captain Patch and the rough, tough, girl pirates. There was plenty of audience participation to engage the children and they all came out of the theatre feeling part of Tom's pirate crew! Since returning to the classroom, the children have enjoyed writing character descriptions and retelling the story using their own words. A fantastic, swash-buckling effort from all! Mrs Franklin-Mitchell Welcome to Reception We are so happy to welcome our new Reception classes to Milbourne Lodge. The children have all made an excellent start and have settled very well into their new class. It has been a busy few weeks and the children have engaged in a range of exciting activities including role play, outdoor learning and interactive music lessons. Mrs Petzer and Mr Davies Football U8 v Parkside – Tuesday 19th September The boys played really well in this tight game and both teams had real chances to win. It was pleasing to see the way the boys fought from the first whistle to the last. On this performance the boys should look forward to the forthcoming fixtures with relish. U10D v Northcote Lodge – Friday 15th September This was a great game with our team winning 3 -2. The game ebbed and flowed but the boys showed enormous passion and drive throughout the match. Phoenix made some great runs into the box and was unlucky not to score. William, our goalkeeper, played like a sweeper for the whole game which cut down on their scoring chances. Special mention has to go to Tom P as he must have covered every inch of grass in this game. Our goal scorers were Zain (2) and Rowan (1). Mr Drummond U10A v Parkside – Tuesday 19th September The U10A’s welcomed Parkside School for their first home game of the season. After last weeks close loss, the U10 side were determined to bounce back with a win. From the start, Milbourne Lodge started to assert their dominance and looked hungry to score goals. Parkside’s skilled playmakers were placed under pressure by the defensive partnership of Dante and Noah. The attacking combination of Jason, Harry and Jacob caused havoc throughout the game. Overall, a successful performance and we look forward to building momentum throughout the season.
