  • Sex and State Making in Revolutionary Cuba, 1959-1968
SEX AND STATE MAKING IN REVOLUTIONARY CUBA, 1959-1968 Rachel M. Hynson A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History. Chapel Hill 2014 Approved By: Kathryn J. Burns Emily Susan Burrill John Charles Chasteen Miguel La Serna Raúl Necochea López Lars Schoultz ©2014 Rachel M. Hynson ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT RACHEL M. HYNSON: Sex and State Making in Revolutionary Cuba, 1959-1968 (Under the direction of Kathryn J. Burns) This dissertation explores the construction of the revolutionary state in order to trace the entwinement of familial health and national security during the first decade of the Cuban revolution. It analyzes campaigns deployed by government officials to remake sexual norms and produce families deemed healthier than those under capitalism. More specifically, my dissertation examines state efforts that normalized patriarchy by criminalizing abortion, legitimized marriage through collective weddings, schematized the workforce by condemning female prostitution, and restructured economic gender roles via the rehabilitation of chulos (loosely translated as “kept men”). Through close analysis of print media, speeches, travel narratives, and oral histories, my work makes two major contributions to the study of Cuban sexuality. First, by joining prerevolutionary context to an analysis of revolutionary policies, I demonstrate that the sexual behaviors lauded by state officials as new measures of revolutionary well-being were in fact traditional criteria recycled from prior Cuban regimes. Second, I assert that revolutionary leadership of the 1960s attempted to remake the state by challenging popular definitions of terms such as marriage, family planning, sex worker, and chulo.

u Center for ~esearchon Social Organization The Working Paper Series The University of Michigan Ann Arbor CHANGES IN IMATE CHOICE IN CHENGDU by Mart in King Whyte #36 1 September 1988 CHANGES IN MATE CHOICE IN CHENGDU Martin King Whyte University of Michigan The family is the basic unit of social organization in any society, and in Chinese culture the centrality of family organization has been explicitly acknowledged for centuries. Efforts to change society must deal with the family as an institution, and since the process of mate choice is a central defining element of family organization, changes in the nature of the mate choice process will be an important aspect of such change efforts. In this paper I wish to consider how the nature of the mate choice process has changed over time in urban China. I am concerned here with both long term and short term changes. In the long term I want to examine how much the process of mate choice has changed in general since 1949 in the PRC. From a short term perspective I am interested in how much this process has been changed in the post-Mao or reform period. In discussing changes in the process of mate choice in urban China I will rely primarily on data from a survey of mate choice and marriage relations in Chengdu on which I have been collaborating over the last several years. My collaborators in this research are Yuan Yayu and Xu Xiaohe, from the Sociology Research Office of Sichuan University, although they bear no responsibility for the particular interpretations offered here.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE The Consequences of the Revolutionary Reform of Marriage and the Wedding Ceremony in Northern Vietnamese Village Life Shaun Kingsley Malarney The Vietnamese revolution represented an unprecedented intrusion of state power into the realm of family and kin in the Vietnamese countryside. This article examines one element in this process, the revolutionary reforms of marriage and weddings. Drawing on documents issued by the government and Communist Party, as well as data gathered during eighteen months of field research in Thinh Liet commune on the southern outskirts of Hanoi, the reform process will be examined in terms of three main components: legal initiatives; the bureaucratization of marriage; and the reform of the ritual cycle. As will be argued, the reforms had a number of explicit aims, such as the creation of equality between men and women in conjugal relations, the estab- lishment of a free and voluntary marital regime, and the elimination of status compe- tition between co-villagers; however, implicit in the reforms was also an attempt to neutralize the role of the family in the formation and legitimation of a conjugal bond. As will be shown, this latter aim encountered the most resistance of any element in the reform campaign. The enduring reluctance of families to allow the state to usurp their role in weddings and marriages has profoundly influenced which elements of the campaign succeeded and which did not. Familial Control of Marriage in the Pre-revolutionary Village Vietnamese often describe marriage and weddings as “works of the family” (viec gia dinh) as they are almost always planned and performed with the desires of parents and senior relatives in mind.1) Historically, this took many forms.

  • Terànga and the Art of Hospitality: Engendering the Nation, Politics, and Religion in Dakar, Senegal
TERÀNGA AND THE ART OF HOSPITALITY: ENGENDERING THE NATION, POLITICS, AND RELIGION IN DAKAR, SENEGAL By Emily Jenan Riley A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Anthropology - Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT TERÀNGA AND THE ART OF HOSPITALITY: ENGENDERING THE NATION, POLITICS AND RELIGION IN DAKAR, SENEGAL By Emily Jenan Riley Senegal, a Muslim majority and democratic country, has long coined itself as "le pays de la terànga" (Land of Hospitality). This dissertation explores the central importance of terànga– the Wolof word which encapsulates the generous and civic-minded qualities of individuals – to events such as weddings and baptisms, women’s political process, as well as everyday calculated and improvisational social encounters. Terànga is both the core symbol, for many, of Senegalese nationalism and collective identity, and the source of contentious and polarizing debates surrounding its qualities and meanings. The investigation of terànga throughout this dissertation exposes the complexities of social and gender ideologies and practices in Senegal. In addition, this dissertation aspires to investigate the subjectivities, and conditions of Senegalese women as well as their contributions to the social, religious, and political realities of contemporary Senegal, and Dakar more specifically. This dissertation focuses on how terànga is debated, talked about, and performed by several groups. First, it investigates the public discourses of terànga as a gendered symbol of national culture and its central importance to the construction of female subjects in their navigation of courtship, marriage, and family relations. Second, an exposé of family ceremonies and the women who conduct them, demonstrates generational shifts in the interpretation and value given to the process of terànga in a contemporary moment where daughters are redefining its meaning from that of their mother's generation.

For more information, please contact [email protected]. The Right to Feast and Festivals Juan Carlos Riofrio* ABSTRACT Festive behavior is a basic characteristic of human life, as evidenced from ancient times. Humans need to use ceremony and ritual in specific places and times to mark their triumphs, joys, and sorrows. However, some categories of individuals are harmed because they cannot celebrate the most important highlights of their lives through such festive feasts: prisoners, mariners at sea, soldiers on the frontlines, workers subject to the pressures of ungenerous employers, towns occupied by oppressive invaders, and impoverished individuals who cannot afford customary celebrations, among others. When feasts and festivals are restricted, societies lose well-being, communities lose identity, and individuals lose freedom of expression. This normative Article helps fill a gap in the legal literature, which overlooks feasts as a right based on reason, some constitutions, laws, and international human rights. This Article calls for formal recognition and robust and coherent protection of a general right to feast, in constitutional law and in the international framework of human rights.

  • Performing Political Opposition in Russia
2014:8 SOCIOLOGY PUBLICATIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL RESEARCH 2014:8 PERFORMING POLITICAL OPPOSITION IN RUSSIA RUSSIA IN OPPOSITION POLITICAL PERFORMING Russian civil society is often described as weak and Russians as politically apathetic. However, as a surprise for many, tens of thousands of people gathered on the streets of Moscow to protest the fraud in the parliamentary elections in December 2011. Nevertheless, this ‘awakening’ did not last for long as Vladimir Putin took hold of the Presidency again in 2012. Since then, the Russian State Duma has passed new legislation to restrict civic and political activism. This, together with the fragmentation of the opposition movement, has hindered large-scale and sustained mobiliza- tion against the government. In 2013, the number of protests has plummeted when the risks of demonstrating are high and the benefits to participate in political activism appear non-existent. Why is it impossible for the Russian opposition to find a common voice and to sustain contentious action? This book analyzes how political opportunities and restrictions in contem- porary Russia have affected the opposition activists’ activities at the grassroots level. The book examines Russian civil society, contemporary activist strategies, and democratization from the − THE CASE OF THE YOUTH MOVEMENT OBORONA OBORONA MOVEMENT YOUTH THE OF CASE THE perspective of the young activists participating in the liberal youth movement Oborona (Defense) in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Before its dissolution in 2011, Oborona was an active participant in the Russian opposition movement, and thus it is an interesting case study of the living activist traditions in Russia. The research illustrates how the Soviet continuities and liberal ideas are entangled in Russian political activism to create new post-socialist political identities and practices.
