He falls unconscious clinging to the wreckage. When he wakes, he finds himself floating near an uninhabited island. After eating strange fruit to restore his energy, he explores his surroundings. Suddenly, giant monstrous birds engage him in a fight to the death. He kills one of the birds but is severely wounded. Fortunately, a boat full of guards arrives from a neighboring land. The guards welcome him as their savior for killing the beast and tend to his wounds. As he recovers, he discovers that the inhabitants of this foreign land are all hermaphrodites; that is, they all possess “les deux sexes,” and only welcomed him into their hidden society because Sadeur is himself a hermaphrodite. After recovering from his harrowing journey and unexpected rescue, Sadeur proceeds to explore the austral society. While this story may read as a fever dream, Gabriel Foigny insists in his Au Lecteur that he shares

For instance, composers may evoke passion in a romantic scene with lush string passages or inspire fear throughout horror films with inharmonious drones. This study investigates such phenomena through a quantitative evaluation of music that is associated with different film genres. We construct supervised neural network models with various pooling mechanisms to predict a film's genre from its soundtrack. We use these models to compare handcrafted music information retrieval (MIR) features against VGGish audio embedding features, finding similar performance with the top-performing architectures. We examine the best-performing MIR feature model through permutation feature importance (PFI), determining that mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) and tonal features are most indicative of musical differences between genres. We investigate the interaction between musical and visual features with a cross-modal analysis, and do not find compelling evidence that music characteristic of a certain genre implies low-level visual features associated with that genre. Furthermore, we provide software code to replicate this study at https://github.com/usc-sail/mica-music-in-media. This work adds to our understanding of music's use in multi-modal contexts and offers the potential for future inquiry into human affective experiences.

Evans Anachronism in Early French Futuristic Fiction Pawe³ Frelik, in his essay “The Future of the Past: Science Fiction, Retro, and Retrofuturism” (2013), defined the idea of retrofuturism as referring “to the text’s vision of the future, which comes across as anachronistic in relation to contemporary ways of imagining it” (208). Pawe³’s use of the word “anachronistic” in this definition set me to thinking. Aren’t all fictional portrayals of the future always and inevitably anachronistic in some way? Further, I saw in the phrase “contemporary ways of imagining” a delightful ambiguity between two different groups of readers: those of today who, viewing it in retrospect, see such a speculative text as an artifact, an inaccurate vision of the future from the past, but also the original readers, contemporary to the text when it was written, who no doubt saw it as a potentially real future that was chock-full of anachronisms in relation to their own time—but that one day might no longer be.

    I Introduction A Preliminary View of the Research Problem In all epochs and cultures, despite their differences, men have always been united by one common denominator: they have wanted to be happy. Happiness has been called the summum bonum, i.e., the ultimate goal of all human thoughts and actions.1 This important argument was already advanced by Aristotle, who postulates in his Nicomachean Ethics that happiness is “the end of human things”, and belongs to the class of activities which are “desirable in themselves”.2 It is no exaggeration to argue that the desire for happiness forms such a constituent element in man that if he ceases to hope for this, he has lost his very essence as a sentient creature. Yet, in a world torn apart by miseries from devastating natural disasters to social, political and economic inequalities, happiness often turns out to be a mere illusion. It is like a mirage which escapes man in the wilderness at the moment when he imagines he has reached it. In the course of the centuries the desire to find happiness has assumed many different forms. Since the existing conditions rarely provide the optimal ground for the realization of happiness, men have turned to creating in their imagina- tion images of some ideal condition either in this life or beyond the grave. As Karl Mannheim has pointed out, the fantasizing faculty has throughout the ages formed an constitutive element in human life: “Myths, fairy tales, other-worldly promises of religion, humanistic fantasies, travel romances, have been continually changing expressions of that which was lacking in actual life.”3 Utopian visions represent one branch of wishful thinking.

    La musica unisce l'Europa… e non solo C'è chi la definisce "La Champions League" della musica e in fondo non sbaglia. L'Eurovision è una grande festa, ma soprattutto è un concorso in cui i Paesi d'Europa si sfidano a colpi di note. Tecnicamente, è un concorso fra televisioni, visto che ad organizzarlo è l'EBU (European Broadcasting Union), l'ente che riunisce le tv pubbliche d'Europa e del bacino del Mediterraneo. Noi italiani l'abbiamo a lungo chiamato Eurofestival, i francesi sciovinisti lo chiamano Concours Eurovision de la Chanson, l'abbreviazione per tutti è Eurovision. Oggi più che mai una rassegna globale, che vede protagonisti nel 2016 43 paesi: 42 aderenti all'ente organizzatore più l'Australia, che dell'EBU è solo membro associato, essendo fuori dall'area (l’anno scorso fu invitata dall’EBU per festeggiare i 60 anni del concorso per via dei grandi ascolti che la rassegna fa in quel paese e che quest’anno è stata nuovamente invitata dall’organizzazione). L'ideatore della rassegna fu un italiano: Sergio Pugliese, nel 1956 direttore della RAI, che ispirandosi a Sanremo volle creare una rassegna musicale europea. La propose a Marcel Bezençon, il franco-svizzero allora direttore generale del neonato consorzio eurovisione, che mise il sigillo sull'idea: ecco così nascere un concorso di musica con lo scopo nobile di promuovere la collaborazione e l'amicizia tra i popoli europei, la ricostituzione di un continente dilaniato dalla guerra attraverso lo spettacolo e la tv. E oltre a questo, molto più prosaicamente, anche sperimentare una diretta in simultanea in più Paesi e promuovere il mezzo televisivo nel vecchio continente.

The 1989 Illinois Shakespeare I Illinois State University Illinois Shakespeare Festival Dear friends and patrons, Welcome to the twelfth annual Illinois Shakespeare Festival. In honor of his great contributions to the Festival, we dedicate this season to the memory of Douglas Harris, our friend, colleague and teacher. Douglas died in a plane crash in the fall of 1988 after having directed an immensely successful production of Richard III last summer. His contributions and inspiration will be missed by many of us, staff and audience alike. We look forward to the opportunity to share this season's wonderful plays, including our first non-Shakespeare play. For 1989 and 1990 we intend to experiment with performing classical Illinois State University plays in addition to Shakespeare that are suited to our acting company and to our theatre space.
