A new species of the freshwater atyid shrimp, Caridina bruneiana from Negara Brunei Darussa- lam, Borneo is described. Caridina bruneiana is characterized by its moderately long and deep rostrum, pereiopod shape, spination and segmental ratios, the shape and spination of its posterior telsonie margin, egg size and the presence of an appendix interna on the endopod of the first male pleopod. The distribution of atyid shrimps in forested streams and their possible use as bio- indicators of stream water quality in tropical rainforests are briefly discussed. Satish C. Scaphognathite c3/p3 0.65 ± 0.05 with regular row of long plumose setae on distal margin c4/p4 0.53 ± 0.03 c5/p5 0.46 ± 0.03 with shorter simple ones continuing down proximal tri- m3/p3 1.29 ± 0.03 angular process which has many long simple setae, some m4/p4 1.06 ± 0.04 with prominent dilation near base.

It can be easily distinguished from its congeners based on a combination of characters, which includes a short rostrum, the shape of the endopod of the male first pleopod, the segmental ratios of antennular peduncle and third maxilliped, the slender scaphocerite, and the absence of a median projection on the posterior margin.

This paper reports the RAPD analysis of two species of fresh water prawns of Atydiae and Palaemonidiae family and the genus Macrobrachium and Caridina collected from Kanyakumari district. Specimens are identified using species-specific morphological characteristics. Morphological characters have limitations of describing intra specific genetic diversity as they are polygenic and expressions can be modified by the environment. The advent of molecular technique made possible not only the genetic analysis and also the study of evolutionary relationship. Molecular analysis of the morphologically identified species are done by extracting the DNA from the animal and concentration of DNA is measured using Nanodrop spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 280nm. Further analysis was performed with RAPD (Rapid Amplified Polymorphic DNA) a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) based technique. It consist of genomic DNA, amplified with randomly constructed oligonucleotides. Specific quantity of extracted DNA was then amplified by multiplex PCR using random primers and 16S rRNA gene products was then analyzed using a bioanalyzer.

Frontiers in Zoology 2013, 10:76 http://www.frontiersinzoology.com/content/10/1/76 RESEARCH Open Access Myogenesis of Malacostraca – the “egg-nauplius” concept revisited Günther Joseph Jirikowski1*, Stefan Richter1 and Carsten Wolff2 Abstract Background: Malacostracan evolutionary history has seen multiple transformations of ontogenetic mode. For example direct development in connection with extensive brood care and development involving planktotrophic nauplius larvae, as well as intermediate forms are found throughout this taxon. This makes the Malacostraca a promising group for study of evolutionary morphological diversification and the role of heterochrony therein. One candidate heterochronic phenomenon is represented by the concept of the ‘egg-nauplius’, in which the nauplius larva, considered plesiomorphic to all Crustacea, is recapitulated as an embryonic stage. Results: Here we present a comparative investigation of embryonic muscle differentiation in four representatives of Malacostraca: Gonodactylaceus falcatus (Stomatopoda), Neocaridina heteropoda (Decapoda), Neomysis integer (Mysida) and Parhyale hawaiensis (Amphipoda). We describe the patterns of muscle precursors in different embryonic stages to reconstruct the sequence of muscle development, until hatching of the larva or juvenile. Comparison of the developmental sequences between species reveals extensive heterochronic and heteromorphic variation. Clear anticipation of muscle differentiation in the nauplius segments, but also early formation of longitudinal trunk musculature independently of the teloblastic proliferation zone, are found to be characteristic to stomatopods and decapods, all of which share an egg-nauplius stage. Conclusions: Our study provides a strong indication that the concept of nauplius recapitulation in Malacostraca is incomplete, because sequences of muscle tissue differentiation deviate from the chronological patterns observed in the ectoderm, on which the egg-nauplius is based.
