METRO PAST - DALLAS MORNING NEWS

19 August 1887 Henry James, a well-known saloon keeper, made complaint to Sheriff Lewis yesterday, saying that his wife had skipped wi th a handsamer man the preceding night, taking wi th her everything of value that she could conveniently carry from the house. 14 September 1887 Clay Mack and J. L. woods were in the city yesterday purchasing the material for the new eight page paper which they propose to publish. The new paper will be issued wi thin the next three weeks.

12 November 1887 Last Thursday night the attention of Mrs. H.S. White, 1282 Main street, was attracted by angel notes and, opening the front door, she found in a basket a beautiful girl baby about three weeks old. It was carefully wrapped in a blanket, and had on laces and other symptoms of fashionable motherhood. As Mrs. white removed the little responsibility from the basket, it opened its soft blue eyes and smiled. overjoyed at being the hostess of a benighted babe, which may soon come to learn its mother 1 s love, Mrs. White took the baby to her husband, WhO started out in a quest of 11 goody11 in the shape of milk and a sugar apparatus, which he borrowed from a neighbor.

7 December 1887 Mr. T.J. Putty filed a real estate transfer yesterday in which the consideration given was his love and affection for his mother-in-law, showing the fine lucidi ty of Texas civilization.

24 December 1887 Jimmy Johnson, corner Jefferson and wood, has received a bounding boy for a Christmas present.

12 January 1888 Another old sweetheart of James Buchanan d°ied a few days ago. Gradually but surely it is coming to light, if these aged and respectable ladies are to be believed, that James was somewhat of a masher in his time.

PLANNING A RESEARCH TRIP By

•Renee Smith, C.A.L.S.

successful research trips that are productive happy events rarely happen without proper planning. If you are considering a research trip there are a number of things that should be done before hopping into the car and taking off, expecting everyone and everything to be anxiously waiting for you.

If this is to be your first research trip I suggest you study Val Greenwood's The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy and have a good working knowledge of all the records you vill be examining; i.e., deeds, wills, probates, marriage records etc. study and understand the information that may be found within each record and the meaning of related terms. If there is a vord you do not understand, look it up in your dictionary. This is not only more convenient and less expensive in the long run, but an absolute necessity if you are to know exactly what you are going for and where the record is to be found; and once located is fully understood and easier to evaluate.

Before leaving home, be sure you have completed your homework and have exhausted all local avenues of research on the line being worked. Consider an early spring trip, especially if you plan to vis it cemeteries. The time should fall between the end of the bunting season and the beginning of heavy new spring growth, making any field search easier. Also, the archives and libraries are usually not as busy, less ening time in the waiting lines for assistance, records, readers and at times, even sitting space which may be at a premium during the usual summer time vacation periods.

Should you choose a spring trip, check for local or state conferences that may be scheduled during the time you plan to be in the region. These can be very helpful in expanding your knowledge of local records and you vill meet others living or working in the area. It is not necessary to be a member of a specific genealogical society to attend their workshops and conferences. Do not overlook this wonderfU:l opportuni ty.

Take your ancestor and family group sheets with you. These should always Qe made at the beginning of any new line of research and should be kept updated and correct at all times, noting the source of all information cited on the back of the sheet for easy access. In moving forward from one generation to the next, a new family group sheet should

PAGE 38 DGS: THE DALLAS QUARTERLY MARCH, 1988 be made at that time so take extra forms with you for this purpose.

Make a chronology of important events in the lives of the family/ies you are researching, going back in time as far as possible (the dates and places of birth, death, marriage, migrations etc.). This will help you in identifying individuals during research. It is very easy to get confused when working with large families and repet i tious names while sort ing the indi viduals in to their proper family grouping.

Once the chronology is made, make a priority list of the records you need and are seeking. stay wi th the list and get these records first, otherwise it is possible to return home wi thout data on one or more lines that were available but not researched and documented.

Do you plan to work only at the state archives? county courthouses only? or do you plan a li ttle work at the state archives, then to the county courthouse, local library, churches, cemeteries, and any other place your search may lead you? Decide where you definitely plan to go, then wri te for a schedule and/or guide -- and don / t forget the BASE. Don 1 t take holidays for granted; if nothing else, call and check working hour schedules before leaving home. It is far less expensive than arriving at some distant place to find they are enjoying a local holiday or week-end closing. ·

Bet aside a li ttle "If" time. --If-- (for exarnple) I get through a day early in Jones county, then I can go to Smith county for a day of research. Don 1 t schedule your time so tightly that you find there isn 1 t time to finish what you came to do. "If" time can often fill unexpected voids. Remember, keeping an open mind is very important in not missing any possibility of locating what you want, and finding what you dare not hope for. Bo give yourself extra time to run down any unexpected clues. Try to avoid the stress of doing too much too quickly leading to a sloppy job of research and many excessive errors, defeating the purpose of the trip.

A few helpful hints: ( 1) Wri te to the proper sources for county maps to take. These maps show the roads, rivers, creeks and cemetery locations that aren 1 t available on most maps. study them before you leave home. (2) Work one generation at a time. Have a definite goal in mind and know what you are going for and where to get it; then get those records first, using your priority list. (3) Always check for previously compiled work on your line before beginning your work at di stant archi ves and libraries. ( 4) Lad i es, wear neat washable slacks for climbing those courthouse ladders. You may also find them useful when wandering around cemeteries and old farmland. (5) Practice safe PAGE 39 DGS: THE DALLAS QUARTERLY MARCH, 1988

research: Don't vander off the beaten track by yourself. If you are alone and vant to visit a county cemetery, or other out of the vay place, qo to a local priest, pastor, school, or the county clerks office. Present your problem and ask for help in locatinq someone reliable and familiar vith the area that would be willinq to qo with you. Offer to pay for their time and assistance. someone may know an older resident that would be happy for this diversion, and if you are lucky, they may turn out to be a walkinq county historyl Be· aware it is not the responsibility of the county clerk or his staff to teach you hov to research. Their responsibility is to make the records available, show you where they are located, and return to their duties. They are, as a vhole, hard-workinq, kindly people and qenerally most willinq to cooperate but they do not have time to analyze your work, make suqqestions, or read old records that you cannot read. Accept the fact that they too have ancestors, and hard as it is for us to believe, some could care less about their ovn ancestry so spare them the history of your and you•ll find them cooperative and helpful. There are a lot of us wanderinq around the courthouses nov and we truly need to exercise patience; cooperation with local rules; respect for their riqht to do thinqs their own way without criticism; to be quiet so others may work; to ask for what we need without lenqthy explanation or discussion; to cheerfully leave durinq the lunch hour if an office closes durinq that period; and one of the most important -- to have plenty of pencils, small sharpener, pens, paper clips, notebook paper, folders, travel stapler, and any other supplies ve may have need for. It is also our responsibility to use all records and books with care. Don•t stack a number of heavy ledqers or books, especially open ones, as it breaks the book bindinq; don' t ever mark in a record book or publication; place the book/records where they belonq vhen you are finished and leave your vork area clean; briefly thank them when you leave.

A short thank you note after arrivinq home, citinq an especially helpful clerk or librarian to his supervisor, is alvays velcome.

Have a qreat trip and happy huntinql 11 •Renee Smith (Mrs Charles A.), 9322 Creel Creek, Dallas, Tx. 75240

MEET ME IN BILOXI

or, WHAT IT, s LIKE TO ATTEND A NGS CONFERENCE

By Bruce Moseley•

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to one of the National Genealogical Society Annual conferences? I did, for several years, before final ly going in 1987. Had I known what a rewarding, fun-filled experience it would be, I would have gone much sooner. If you have never been to a NGS conference, this is intended to give you some idea of what attendance would be like.

The 1988 NGS conference in the states will be held April 27-30, in Biloxi, Mississippi. That•s not too many weeks away, but there is still time to register and make plans to attend.

Prior to 1981, the annual NGS meetings were always held in Washington, D.C., but starting that year they have been held in geographically diverse si tes: Atlanta, Indianapolis, Fort Worth, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Columbus, Ohio. The name, 11 Conference in the states", even reflects the practice of moving about. Last year's session was in Raleigh, following the theme, "Where It All Began", since North Carolina was celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the first English colony in America off i ts coast Roanoke Island. The 1989 conference will be May 11-20 in st. Paul, Minnesota, and in 1990 it will return to Washington.

In Raleigh, the Conference was bosted by the North Carolina Genealogical society. (The Host society Chairman was Jo White Linn, the speaker at our DGS Spring workshop). They bad done an excellent job setting up the Conference: a reception at the capi tol; welcome by the Governor; tours of the NC Archives and libraries at Duke and Chapel Hill; an exhibi ti on wi th displays by genealogical supply houses all over the world; luncheons with distinguished speakers; and entertainment each evening all were background for a most comprehensive series of lectures. ·

Ninety presentations were given during the three and a half days of the Conference. Most lasted about an hour, and usually there were five or six going on at the same time. This poses a minor problem in that sometimes two or more lectures you real ly want to hear are going on simul taneously, so you have to make choices (no lectures are repeated).

As a group, the speakers were outstanding--the very top names in genealogy. It was great to meet and hear people PAGE 41 DGS: THE DALLAS QUARTERLY MARCH, 1988

whose writing I know, such as Elizabeth Shown Mills, Brent Holcomb, Wynette Parks Haun, Paul Andereck, and George Schweitzer. I also took pride in the presentations by our own Lloyd Bockstruck and Renee Smith I

The lecture topics covered most anything you might want to learn about genealogy. Some had a distinctly beginner focus, but aven the interests of professional genealogists were thoroughly addressed. With multiple sessions going on, at any given time there always was something of interest for everyone.

The Raleigh lecture schedule had an understandably Southern flavor. For me, with all my roots in Virginia and the Carolinas, this was greatly appreciated. But people with no connections whatsoever in that area still had plenty to attract them--discussions of genealogical skills and techniques which are applicable anywhere, as well as topics pertaining to other parts of America, Europa, and aven Australia. I took in three computer events, and met the men who wrote the Roots II and Family Roots software packages. The most enjoyable lecture of all for me, however, was a fascinating story of the Draper Kanuscripts, done by James Hansen, librarian at the State Historical society in Wisconsin, where Draper•s collection is housed.

The facilities and materials in Raleigh were first rate. A minimum of note taking was required; in the registration packet was a bound voluma containing every speaker•s outline. Also included was a complete listing of the 1000 participants, and brief biographical skatehes of 106 lecturers and discussion leaders. A cassette tape made during each presentation was for sale later.

The schedule for the 1 88 Conference in Biloxi is similar to last year•s in Raleigh. There will be 112 presentations by noted genealogists, including two by Lloyd Bockstruck ("Leagues, Labors and Empresarios: Texas Land Grants and the Records That Document Them" and "Urban Research in southern ei ties"). Also available will be a gala round of parties, tours, sightseeing and other fun social functions. All Conference activities will be centered in a convenient stretch of Gulf beach. Kost lectures and all exhibits will be held at the new Mississippi Coast Convention Center. Conterence headquarters will be in the Royal d 1 Iberville Hotel. Other co-hosting hotels are Holiday Inn, TraveLodge and Ramada Inn.

The Conference registration tee is $80 if paid by March 15, and $90 after March 15. Nominal taes are charged for some of the special activities. These include a shorecruise and sailfishing, tours of Nottoway Plantation, Mobile By and Bellingrath Gardens, historie Biloxi, and the French Quarter in New Orleans. Research opportunities will be available at

PAGE 42 DGS: THE DALLAS QUARTERLY MARCH, 1988 the L. W. Anderson Genealogical Library at William carey College on the Coast. With all that going on, I wonder who' s going to attend the lee.tures!

WHAT WAS THAT DATE

•Jeanne J. Tabb

If you find an ancestor born "in the twelfth year of Georqe I" in Enqland or America, do you know he vas born in 1726? Many leqal events, otten includinq birth and death, were dated by the year of the sovereiqn•s reiqn. It seldom mattered when the kinq vas born; it vas most important when he took the throne. statutes of the British Parliament are dated this way, referred to by year and monarch, i.e. 1 William IV means the lst year of William IV's reiqn and that year beqan June 26, 1830.
