International Conference: Ancient Greece & Ancient Iran / Cross-Cultural encounters Athens 11-14 November 2006 Abstract Psychotropic plants on Achaemenid–style vessels Dr. Despina IGNATIADOU Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, Greece Three important plants dominate the vegetal decoration of Achaemenid-style vessels: • The opium poppy or papaver somniferum. The petalled element on top of the seedpod is the inspiration for the creation of multi-petalled rosettes. They are usually called long petals and they are one of the most popular decorative elements. Their connection to an existing plant was not attempted until recently, as it was thought that those render a stylized imaginary flower. • The so-called lotus, but really a water-lily: o The white lotus or nymphaea alba. On the vessels appears the flower consisting of rounded petals with parallel ridges. o The blue-lotus or nymphaea caerulaea. On the vessels appears the flower consisting of pointed petals, often called lanceolate leaves. • The almond tree, represented by its fruits, usually called lobes instead of almonds. The three plants appear in a similar way on vessels fabricated in different workshops during the Achaemenid period, within and also outside the geographical boundaries of the Persian Empire. It is also important that they appear on the decoration of shallow and deep bowls, which are vessels used for libations or ritual drinking. They are not wide-range edible plants, on which the local populations would rely for survival. In that case they would have righteously gained their place in the decoration of valuable vessels. Moreover, they are plants which in the historical period grow only in certain parts of the ancient world, while their depiction is ubiquitous. -
Data on Cerambycidae and Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera: Chrysomeloidea) from Bucureªti and Surroundings

The paper presents a synthesis of the data refering to the presence of cerambycids and chrysomelids species of Bucharest and its surroundings, basing on bibliographical sources and the study of the collection material. A number of 365 species of superfamily Chrysomeloidea (140 cerambycids and 225 chrysomelids species), belonging to 125 genera of 16 subfamilies are listed. The species Chlorophorus herbstii, Clytus lama, Cortodera femorata, Phytoecia caerulea, Lema cyanella, Chrysolina varians, Phaedon cochleariae, Phyllotreta undulata, Cassida prasina and Cassida vittata are reported for the first time in this area. Résumé. Ce travail présente une synthèse des données concernant la présence des espèces de cerambycides et de chrysomelides de Bucarest et de ses environs, la base en étant les sources bibliographiques ainsi que l’étude du matériel existant dans les collections du musée. La liste comprend 365 espèces appartenant à la supra-famille des Chrysomeloidea (140 espèces de cerambycides et 225 espèces de chrysomelides), encadrées en 125 genres et 16 sous-familles. We suggest a method of constructing red numbers for plant species, in order to set priorities in con- servation policy. The red number is an additive index, summarising values of four parameters: 1. Rarity – The number of sites (1 km2) where the species is present. A rare species is defined when present in 0.5% of the area or less. 2. Declining rate and habitat vulnerability – Evaluate the decreasing rate in the number of sites and/or the destruction probability of the habitat. 3. Attractivity – the flower size and the probability of cutting or exploitation of the plant. 4. Distribution type – scoring endemic species and peripheral populations. The plant species of Israel were scored for the parameters of the red number. Three hundred and seventy (370) species, 16.15% of the Israeli flora entered into the “Red List” received red numbers above 6. “Post Mortem” analysis for the 34 extinct species of Israel revealed an average red number of 8.7, significantly higher than the average of the current red list. -

Agnatha - Lamprey, Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Super Class: Agnatha Hagfish Agnatha are jawless fish. Lampreys and hagfish are in this class. Members of the agnatha class are probably the earliest vertebrates. Scientists have found fossils of agnathan species from the late Cambrian Period that occurred 500 million years ago. Members of this class of fish don't have paired fins or a stomach. Adults and larvae have a notochord. A notochord is a flexible rod-like cord of cells that provides the main support for the body of an organism during its embryonic stage. A notochord is found in all chordates. Most agnathans have a skeleton made of cartilage and seven or more paired gill pockets. They have a light sensitive pineal eye. A pineal eye is a third eye in front of the pineal gland. Fertilization of eggs takes place outside the body. The lamprey looks like an eel, but it has a jawless sucking mouth that it attaches to a fish. It is a parasite and sucks tissue and fluids out of the fish it is attached to. The lamprey's mouth has a ring of cartilage that supports it and rows of horny teeth that it uses to latch on to a fish. Lampreys are found in temperate rivers and coastal seas and can range in size from 5 to 40 inches. Lampreys begin their lives as freshwater larvae. In the larval stage, lamprey usually are found on muddy river and lake bottoms where they filter feed on microorganisms. The larval stage can last as long as seven years! At the end of the larval state, the lamprey changes into an eel- like creature that swims and usually attaches itself to a fish. -

RAFAN1, C. CORPADE1, A. NIŢOAIA1, R. PONCIŞ1 ABSTRACT. – Risks Induced by Maximum Flow with 1% Probability and Their Effect on Several Species and Habitats in Pricop-Huta-Certeze and Upper Tisa Natura 2000 Protected Areas. The purpose of the paper is to identify and locate some species related to habitats from Pricop-Huta-Certeze and Upper Tisa Natura 2000 Protected Areas (PHCTS) and to determine if they are vulnerable to risks induced by maximum flow phases. In the first chapter are mentioned few references about the morphometric parameters of the hydrographic networks within the study area, as well as some references related to the maximum flow phases frequency. After the second chapter, where methods and databases used in the study are described, we proceed to the identification of the areas that are covered by water during flood, as well as determining the risk level related to these areas. The GIS modeling reveals small extent of the flood high risk for natural environment related to protected areas and greater extent for the anthropic environment. The last chapter refers to several species of fish and batrachia, as well as to those amphibious mammals identified in the study area that are vulnerable to floods (high turbidity effect, reduction of dissolved oxygen quantity, habitats destruction etc.). Morphometric data concerning catchment areas and water courses The Upper Tisa, which forms a 62 km of natural border between Romania and Ukraine among the villages Valea Vișeului and Piatra, is composed by merging the two tributaries, Tisa Neagră (Black Tisa) and Tisa Albă (White Tisa), which have the springs in Păduroşi Carpathian mountains, respectively in Svidoveţ (1183 m) and Cernagora (2058 m) mountains. -

Effluent was collected from Ravi which is one of the highly polluted river as compared to other rivers in Pakistan. One of the major reason is industrial wastewater, which is disposed untreated in the Ravi which is a major threat for aquatic life and toxic for human health. It further reports that the water of Ravi river is contaminated with heavy metals like Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and Zn because their uptake by waterlily plants is an indication that these metals are responsible for polluting Ravi water and this issue need to be resolved on priority basis. In order to estimate the amount of heavy metals in waterlily, different tissues were processed for atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) which revealed that Cd and Cr (later being in high concentration) were significantly accumulated by waterlily roots, stem and leaves, however, roots were more responsive as compared with aerial parts. Other metals were accumulated in negligible amount in roots, and almost no uptake was reported by stems and leaves. -

Solid wood production of hybrid aspen requires relative longer rotation peri- ods, thus increasing risk of wood damages by pests and diseases. We compared dam- ages by heart rot and poplar borer of 48 years old hybrid (Populus tremuloides Michx. × P. tremula L.) and European aspen in a progeny trial located in Eastern part of Latvia. Trees were harvested and rot patches and galleries were recorded and measured at a stump level. The number of galleries had positive relation on number of patches and total area of rot. The susceptibility of the rot and poplar borer was similar for both hybrid and European aspen. Yet, some differences among families were detected. No effect of pathogens damage was observed on the tree growth. Larger trees had smaller proportion and incidence of rot and galleries per unit of area as well as wider outer rot-free wood layer. Many species dominate subalpine and alpine types of vegetation. Despite a long history of research on willows, the evolutionary and ecological factors for this species richness are poorly known. Here we will review recent progress in research on phylogenetic relation- ships, evolution, ecology, and speciation in alpine willows. Phylogenomic reconstructions suggest multiple colonization of the Alps, probably from the late Miocene onward, and reject hypotheses of a single radiation. Relatives occur in the Arctic and in temperate Eurasia. Most species are widespread in the European mountain systems or in the European lowlands. Within the Alps, species differ eco- logically according to different elevational zones and habitat preferences. Homoploid hybridization is a frequent process in willows and happens mostly after climatic fluctuations and secondary contact. Breakdown of the ecological crossing barriers of species is followed by introgressive hybridization. Polyploidy is an important speciation mechanism, as 40% of species are polyploid, including the four endemic species of the Alps.
