One of the thoughts I had as I visited these communities, was the fact that during the recent Operation Pillar of Defense, many of these families were forced to leave their homes to stay with friends and family elsewhere in the country. Earlier that same month, many of our members were forced to leave their homes as a result of the lack of power and heat felt from the impact of Hurricane Sandy. They left under a barrage of terrorist rockets and we left under the force of a hurricane. Both of us are now back in our homes. But while we can probably sleep soundly in our beds, with little concern (at least for now) about another hurricane, in Israel, although they are sleeping in their own beds, I am sure in these southern communities there is still a fear over what will happen next in Gaza. Brotherhood proudly participated in the Torah letter writing. Teens and parents were invited to attend “Hang Up and Drive: An Evening for Parents and Teens with Jacy Good,” With the recent tragedy of Newtown still fresh in our minds and where they had the chance to hear Jacy’s hearts, the instinct to protect our children from harm looms incredible story and learned important very large in all of us. NFTY region. At the end of January, Children need to be protected, sheltered and kept from harm, but to what degree and Senior POWTY members celebrated the when does it become too much? Teaching children to think first, be cautious and to act end of a stressful midterm exam period responsibly is good. When does too much caution create fearful children who are afraid to with a fun night together at our Sayonara take risks? This is a difficult question with no clear answer each parent must make based on Midterms Hibachi Party. their family. One thing I learned as a parent is that children mature and are ready to take on more responsibility quicker than parents are ready to let go. One of the major goals of the ECC is to guide our children to become socially competent. Our staff works with our children to teach them and strengthen their social skills by modeling for the children words, techniques and actions to use when dealing with their peers and adults. It starts with our youngest children by reinforcing good manners and helping them to learn to verbalize instead of taking action first. By the time our children leave the ECC our goal is that they will be able to verbally express their needs and wants with their peers and adults and know when to seek the help and support of an adult when needed or required. The ECC takes the responsibility of keeping our children safe extremely seriously. But keeping children safe doesn’t mean not allowing children to take risks, be challenged and to experience failure, make mistakes or suffer disappointment. All children need to be allowed to experience disappointment and failure to become healthy, productive and emotionally sound adults. Here is a list of upcoming events for all 3 of POWTY Youth Programs this month and next! • February 1, 6-8 pm – Senior POWTY Special Events at the ECC: Puppeteer Len Levitt from Shalom Sesame came to Shabbat with Chaverim the ECC to perform a show for the 3’s luncheon. • February 13, 7-8:30 pm – POWTY 45 Club’s Havdallah Hang Out • March 5, 6-8 pm–Senior POWTY Holiday Culinary Academy: Noodle Kugel • March 9, 7-9 pm – Junior POWTY Afikomen Scavenger Hunt • March 10, 12:45-2 pm – POWTY 45 Club No Sew Pillow Party for Project Sunshine • March 15, 6:30 pm – Senior POWTY Shabbat • March 17, All day – NFTY-NAR Regional Elections
