RÉTROMOBILE SHOW WILL CELEBRATES THE 120 YEARS ANNIVERSARY OF RENAULT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE COMPIÈGNE NATIONAL CAR MUSEUM

2018 will see the third chapter in the partnership between the Compiègne National Car Museum and the Rétromobile show. This new chapter will feature Renault, as a tribute to the 120 anniversary of the car manufacturer ! An opportunity of the visitor to discover to rediscover the history of the brand with the diamond-shaped logo. FROM 1898 TO 2018, BACK ON 120 YEARS OF HISTORY The adventure begins in a small shed at the back of the family garden in Boulogne-Billancourt. Louis Renault, the fourth son of Alfred Renault – who had made his fortune making buttons – is passionate about all things mechanical. At the age of 21, he modifies a De Dion-Bouton tricycle, transforming it into a quadricycle by adding a fourth wheel. He also comes up with a completely new direct drive system which does away with the fan and , both of which are poor at leveraging the engine’s output – which is still low. Paris-Vienna, june 1902 . Mr Louvet sur Renault He files the patent on 9 February 1899, just as the Renault type A copyrights : RMN-Grand Palais (domaine de Compiègne) / Stéphane Maréchalle – for which Louis has already received a number of firm orders as a result of the famous 1898 Christmas race on Rue Lepic – is going into production. This exceptional Type A, donated to the National Car Museum by Louis Renault in 1929, will be presented at Rétromobile. On 29 February 1899, Louis’ two brothers, Marcel and Fernand, invest their money and create Société Renault Frères, headquartered at 10, Avenue du Cours in Billancourt.

The Type B Voiturette comes hot on the heels of the Type A model. Built by the Renault brothers, the 1900 Type B is one of the first cars on the market to feature a roof and two doors. The National Voiturette Renault - Tilbury car-body type, Car Museum owns a Type B and will be presenting it at Rétromobile air-cooled single-cylinder engine of 1 3/4 HP in February. Just like the Type A, it incorporates a De Dion-Bouton produced by the Firme de Dion-Bouton engine, and its bodywork draws inspiration from the Hackney copyrights : RMN-Grand Palais (domaine de Compiègne) / Jean-Pierre Lagiewski carriages which are still in service in large towns and cities.

The following year in 1901, the brothers build a Type D, also incorporating a De Dion-Bouton engine. The model on show at the National Car Museum has undergone a number of changes, and was donated by the Marquis de Dion in April 1936. This is a reminder that De Dion-Bouton engines were used by the Renault brothers «from the start up until 1902-1903». These first three Renault cars had maximum speeds of 30 to 45 km/h.

In August 1899, the Renault brothers realise that – if they want to generate some publicity for their company – they are going to have to take part in the motor races that are proving enormously Small city coupé Renault, type C with a Dion- successful among the general public and in the press. Right from Bouton single-cylinder engine of 3 HP, magneto ignition the start, Marcel and Louis win a number of titles in the voiturette crédits : RMN-Grand Palais (domaine de Compiègne) / Tony category, until Marcel is tragically killed in an accident during the Querrec 1903 Paris-Madrid race. Racing driver François Szisz then takes over the reins of the Renault stable. The brand’s reputation is shored up as the Billancourt factories grow, while the Paris taxi company orders 1500 taxis fitted with the new mechanical taximeter. Following the death of Marcel and then Fernand retiring for health reasons, the Renault brothers dissolve the company and Louis renames it the Société des Automobiles Renault on 1 October 1908. Louis is now the sole owner and innovation steps up as production increases: in 1907, Renault build 14% of all cars in France (179 cars in 1900; then an increase from 1179 to 5100 between 1905 and 1910).

THE RENAULT TYPE V AND THE TYPE CC Coupé driver Renault, car-body Labourdette, 1907, when the fourth Renault car from the National Car Museum – photograpy, glass sheet taken out exceptionally to go on show at Rétromobile – is built: this copyrights : RMN-Grand Palais (domaine de Compiègne) luxurious Type V limousine features bodywork designed by Million Guiet – one of Paris’ most famous . On the car’s doors, the Bourbon-Parme family’s coat of arms can be seen discreetly: the aristocracy adopts the car, but they keep a chauffeur.

The Type V is Renault’s top-of-the-range model, and is built at the Billancourt plants between 1904 and 1908, as is the Type CC, built between 1911 and 1912. Similarly inspired by horse-drawn vehicles, the 1911 double limousine coupé – recently acquired by the National Car Museum – is representative of the luxury cars built by Renault before the First World War. The bodywork was designed by Kellner and son, a famous Parisian , the 4-cylinder engine was built by Renault and the interior harks back to the leatherwork of Renault 1901 type D beginning of the 20th horse-drawn vehicles. century copyrights: RMN-Grand Palais (domaine de Compiègne) / Jean-Gilles Berizzi This remarkable acquisition was made possible by the Ministry of Culture and Communication via the General Heritage Division and the Department for French Museums with support from the heritage fund. It is on display exclusively for the first time to members of the general public at the February 2018 Rétromobile show.

The authenticity of these two luxury Renault cars is one of the main essential characteristics of the National Car Museum’s acquisition and restoration policy. Its collections are considered works of arts and are treated as such, representative of human creative genius. Here, the creative genius belongs to Louis Renault and his brothers and their teams, as well as to the French automotive industry at the start of the 20th century – which at the time was the most Dual coupé limousine, Renault, type CC, 1911 innovative in the world. crédits : RMN-Grand Palais (domaine de Compiègne) RENAULT’S TANK UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT AT THE RÉTROMOBILE SHOW IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SAUMUR TANK MUSEUM

Renault has been part of the history of France for more than a century. In 1911 Louis Renault launched a production of vehicles to equip the French army, which marks the beginning of the great adventure “Renault under the flags”. Renault is becoming a key player in this new war economy by supplying weapons, ammunition, aircraft engines, trucks and armored cars. This year, Rétromobile, in partnership with the Saumur Tank Museum, will pay tribute to this beautiful alliance and will delight its visitors with the M7 Priest self-propelled gun in a dynamic demonstration in front of the Pavilion 1.

THE RENAULT FT LIGHT TANK This tank has come to symbolise the First World War and was nicknamed the Victory Tank. It was intended as a replacement for the older Schneider and Saint-Chamond tanks – primarily «breakthrough tanks» which were less manoeuvrable and relatively fragile. In 1916, General Estienne (considered by many in France to be the father of the modern tank) asked to meet Louis Renault to discuss a project to design a revolutionary new tank. Having first turned down his request, Louis Renault eventually told him: «General, I’m going to build you your tank». He quickly started work on a prototype. The General had been extremely clear in his request. He wanted a light, rapid tank that was effective in combat, easy to build, inexpensive and well suited to mass production. On 22 December 1916, Louis Renault got behind the controls of his prototype and gave the first official demonstration before France’s military authorities. This armoured vehicle was completely modern, light, easy to manoeuvre and highly effective. It featured a turret that could rotate through 360°, outsized tracks and a rear engine separated from the crew compartment. This revolutionary design still features in today’s tanks. Renault’s light FT tanks had their battlefield debut on 31 May 1918 between Bétheny and Neuville, just north of Reims. 30 of them successfully broke up a German advance on the other side of the river Marne. 20 years later, the Renault FT was still in operation at the start of the Second World War. The FT tank was exported to many other countries and around 700 were also built under licence in the United States.

Renault FT 1917 «Musée des Blindés» Collection THE RENAULT B1 BIS TANK With its enveloping tracks, its 75-mm gun on the left-hand side of its body and a 47-mm turret gun, this 32-tonne tank was extremely impressive. The powerful 6-cylinder 307 hp Renault engine was derived from an aeroplane engine. The tank’s steering, together with the 75-millimetre gun’s aim, was managed by a fully-hydraulic Naeder type system. In those days, this was a very modern method. In battles, the B1 Bis was feared by German armoured vehicles. It was powerfully armed and its shielding was so thick that enemy shells could not get through it. But such a monster required a great deal of maintenance, rigorous training was needed to drive it and it was extremely inefficient: the B1 Bis guzzled 330 L of fuel for every 100 km it travelled. Of the 400 B1 and B1 Bis tanks built, only 11 remain, some of which are wrecks. TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF 1937’S RENAULT B1 BIS TANK Crew: 4 men Weight in combat order: 32 tonnes Armour: 60 mm Armament: 1 75-mm gun on the right with 74 shells, 1 47-mm gun in the turret with 62 shells, 2 7.5-mm machine guns with 4800 cartridges Engine: -cyl, 16 L engine derived from an aeroplane engine Power: 307 hp Renault B1 bis Fuel: petrol «Musée des Blindés» Collection Operational range: 180 km Fuel consumption: 330 litres/100 km Fuel capacity: 400 L Road speed: 28 km/h THE RENAULT AMR 33 In 1931, Renault began investigating the feasibility of an armoured machine-gun vehicle on tracks, complete with turret for the cavalry divisions. Thanks to the 8-cylinder engine mounted on Renault Reinastellas, the AMR could reach speeds of 50 km/h and was well suited as a reconnaissance vehicle with excellent all- terrain abilities. This light tank was used up until 1940. The model on show is the only one still in existence of the 123 that were built. TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF 1933’S RENAULT AMR 33 Crew: 2 men Combat weight: 5 tonnes Maximum armour: 13 mm Armament: 7.5 mm machine gun Engine: 1 Reinastella engine Power 84 hp Fuel: petrol Fuel consumption: 64 litres per 100 km. It would be loaded with 800 kg of shells and cartridges. Its cab was derived from a small civilian which lent it an extremely modern appearance. This tracked tractor pulled a 600 kg trailer which carried a 450 L petrol tank, oil cans and water. The vehicle was presented to the military authorities in January 1938.

RENAULT R35 LIGHT INFANTRY TANK In the early 1930s, the 1917 Renault FT was still in use across most of the French army. But the time had come to design a more powerful tank. The specifications were quite precise: a crew of 2, a minimum weight of 8 tonnes, an engine that could drive it at 20 km/h, irrespective of the slope, 8 hours of autonomous operation and a 37-millimetre semi-automatic gun twinned with a 7.5 mm machine gun. Renault built 1540 R35 tanks between 1935 and 1940. This tank was sufficiently armoured to withstand blasts from small-calibre guns. The crew was made up of a driver at the front, and – at the turret – a commanding officer/shooter who just sat on a leather strap. This tank was also used by the Polish, Romanian, Yugoslav and Turkish armies.

Road speed: 20 km/h Renault R35 «Musée des Blindés» Collection DYNAMIC PRESENTATION OF THE TANK MUSEUM’S M7 PRIEST TANK This year, the team at the Saumur Tank Museum will present the M7 Priest self-propelled artillery vehicle, performing outdoor dynamic demonstrations outside hall 1. This armoured vehicle was designed for the artillery in 1941 and remained in use until the end of the war. The pillbox housed a large 105 mm Howitzer which made it a formidable weapon. This self-propelled artillery vehicle played a key role in winning the Second Desert Battle of El Alamein against the Germans. It was nicknamed the «Priest» by the British Army because it featured a small open turret which bore a curious resemblance to a priest’s pulpit. The engine which powered this piece of artillery was just as impressive – a superb Ford V8 (that one might just as easily expect to find in a ), built entirely out of aluminium and featuring two cylinder heads with four overhead camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder. Its 18 L developed 500 hp and it guzzled 500 L of petrol per 100 km. THE RÉTROMOBILE SHOW WILL BE BRINGING LIGHT TO THE CLASSIC POPULAR CARS WITH A DEDICATED SPACE

Collecting classic cars has always been seen a hobby for the wealthier members of society. But Rétromobile proves that in fact, the opposite holds true by carrying on with its tradition of presenting cars that more people can afford.Last novelty this year, the opportunity to present its classic car for sale (over 30 years - until 1989) with a single rule: not to exceed 25 000 € TTC. Popular classic cars are riding high!

Bugatti, Ferrari, Porsche… are the brands that have shaped automotive history. However, a world away from a Bugatti Royale or a Porsche 911, many other old models are available for sale at very reasonable prices. This automotives called «popular» are for many people a way to reliving childhood memories or precious moments.

THE “GRANDES HEURES DE L’AUTODROME” PRESENTED ON THE FAMOUS WALKWAY OF THE RETROMOBILE SHOW

An essential pit stop between Pavilions 1 and 2, every year, the Rétromobile walkway transports visitors to the world of motor racing. Building on the success of the “Group B - 30 years already!” exhibition in 2017, Rétromobile and Les Grandes Heures Automobiles have once again teamed up for an exhibition inspired by the records broken at the Autodrome de Linas-Montlhéry - a legendary racing circuit on the outskirts of Paris.

THE AUTODROME DE LINAS-MONTLHÉRY TAKES THE PODIUM AT RÉTROMOBILE 2018

After just three meetings, Les Grandes Heures Automobiles - a Rétromobile partner - at the Autodrome has already earned a reputation as one of the top features in the motor-racing calendar. Marking a revival in motor sports, the Voison des records of 1927 2017 event was attended by some 16,000 spectators.

An exhibition focusing on the “Grandes Heures de l’Autodrome de Linas- Montlhéry”, a legendary race circuit close to Paris, will be organised at Rétromobile. For the eighth consecutive year, the magazine Youngtimers is taking part in Rétromobile. For this 43rd edition, the monthly dedicated to the cult cars of 1970-90 puts French cars under the spotlight. But not just any: the most beautiful, the most original, the most chic and the most innovative, with this consummate art expressed by our manufacturers in transforming ready-to-wear into high fashion. Four decades of French automobiles are on the Youngtimers podium, through six models…

CITROËN CX PRESTIGE Appearing in 1976, the Prestige version of the CX has all the attributes of a car with a proud pedigree. A wheelbase extended by 25 cm – that of the estate car –, the vinyl roof typical of premium cars from the 1970s, with stainless steel and chrome in abundance and specific hubcaps. But you must get inside it to really appreciate the work done by Citroen. Leather upholstery at all levels, pure wool carpet, Alcantara roof lining, individual sunshades and cigar lighters, Citroën CX Prestige foot rest to relax the arches of the feet, wrist straps for getting out crédits : E.Houplain of the car, electric vehicles for everyone and air-conditioning: a real palace!

MATRA BAGHEERA « COURRÈGES » The Bagheera began its career on 14 April 1973 in front of journalists on the banks of Annecy Lake. With it, recycled the good ideas of the 530: steel chassis/shell, body made of reinforced polyester and engine at the centre rear, this time positioned crosswise. The only point of disagreement between Chrysler- and Philippe Guédon, the manager of Matra Automobiles: the number of passenger spaces. The first wanted four, the second wanted two… Matra Bagheera «Courrèges» A compromise was finally found with three seats at the front! The limited «Courrèges» series appeared in September 1974 and was distinguished by its colour, its white interior trim and its acronym «AC» (for André Courrèges) on the driver door.

PEUGEOT 406 COUPÉ It was released at the end of 1996 and was generally considered to be one of the most beautiful French achievements. It was Lorenzo Ramaciotti, «design and research» manager since 1988 at Pininfarina, who designed its slender profile. This brilliant designer supervised the birth of a series of cars from Ferrari, from the 456 GT to the fantastic Enzo, as well as the 550 Maranello, 360 , 612 Scaglietti and F430. The good fairies were present at the birth of this Peugeot 406 Coupé beauty, because, as well as its formal appearance, the statuesque crédits : D.Meunier Franco-Italian adds a sophisticated chassis and an advanced engine (V6 3.0), able to slipstream certain Swabian or Bavarian coupés of the time. RENAULT SUPERCINQ BACCARA At the end of the 1980s, the gulf between the «under-equipped city car» and the « with all comforts» was beginning to disappear. Because a chic urban clientele no longer expected to have to navigate the maze of streets in town centres in large saloons. The Supercinq Baccara provided the solution with style: bumpers in the colour of the body, aluminium «Comet» wheels, fog lights, metallic or black paint, electric pack (electric front windows + central locking by remote control), power steering, seats covered Renault Supercinq Baccara with Connolly leather in Ficelle colour, and… garment bag fixed crédits : A. Saunier under the rear shelf, enabling some clothing to be stored without becoming crumpled. So chic…

RENAULT AVANTIME The well-named Avantime («before time» in franglais), born ten years too early, never encountered the hoped-for success. In the spirit of the designers, it was an attempt to capture the well-off clientele of the large monospaces, who appreciate the high driving position and the passenger space bathed in light, but who are generally seduced by a statuesque coupé made in Germany, once the children come of age… This «coupéspace» designed by Renault (and Matra) at the dawn of the 2000s alone demonstrates the spirit of innovation and the uniqueness of the French manufacturers: SMC (Sheet Moulding crédits: A.Saunier Compound) bodywork, twin-stage parallel opening doors, structure and runners made of aluminium sections, etc.

VENTURI In thirteen years (1987-2000), built a little legend: 643 cars produced, some examples of bravery on the road or the track and an exceptional rate of survival, thanks to its fanatics. The elegant sobriety of Gérard Godfroy’s design has enabled it to grow old without showing too many wrinkles. On board, the impression remains flattering with an incredibly warm atmosphere, worthy of an English sitting room, with abundant walnut veneer and full leather trim with neat seams. An authentic GT as well as a real sports car: ultra-responsive steering, roll reduced to nothing and a MVS Venturi very pronounced taste for clear and clean changes of support… crédits : A.Saunier THE ABARTH SAGA, A TASTE OF THE SWISS COLLECTION OF ENGELBERT MÖLL AT THE RETROMOBILE SHOW

Reborn 10 years ago, the Italian racing car market with the scorpion outstripped all the major names during the post-war boom. This amazing adventure will be recounted during the Retromobile show through 22 models taken from Engelbert Möll’s magnificent Swiss collection

CARLO ABARTH, A CHARACTER ! When it comes to wizards with mechanics, France had Amédée . Italy had . On 15 November 1908, Dora Taussig, heir to a textiles company, gave birth to a baby boy with a strong character: Karl Abarth, mostly know under the name of Carl. As a teenager, he showed a strong interest in mechanics, particularly everything to do with motorcycles. Initially, he worked for Castagna & C in Vienna, but then his career The Engelbert Möll’s collection path changed when he joined the Motor Thun workshop (run by Copyrights : Rémi DARGEGEN Count Thun). When one of its drivers defected, he found himself competing in Austria’s motorcycle grand prix. He raced the fastest time in the free trials and the qualifying heats: Karl had entered the big boys’ playground. The die has been cast and it was the beginning of a series of victory. His reputation extended well beyond Austria: he managed to win a wager that he could beat the Orient Express on the Vienna-to-Ostend stretch.
