Orr (1936-2009) was one of a number of rank-and-file labour militants in the city of Saint John, New Brunswick who bore witness to, and had some hand in, a number of upheavals in the local labour movement. Growing up in a working-class neighborhood in west Saint John, he came of age at the time of the momentous Canadian Seamen’s Union strike of 1949, which had a permanent impact on his outlook. Leaving school at sixteen to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway, he then joined the navy before going on to become a lifelong union man on the docks. As a member of Local 1764, International Longshoremen’s Association, he helped lead the 1974 strike against the Maritime Employers’ Association. He was one of the organizers of the 1976 Saint John General Strike on 14 October against the federal government’s wage controls. Orr was also a key organizer of the 1979 NO CANDU campaign that closed the port in support of civil rights for workers in Argentina. -

1 24 JEWISH INFLUENCE IN THE MASS MEDIA, Part II In 1985 Laurence Tisch, Chairman of the Board of New York University, former President of the Greater New York United Jewish Appeal, an active supporter of Israel, and a man of many other roles, started buying stock in the CBStelevision network through his company, the Loews Corporation. The Tisch family, worth an estimated 4 billion dollars, has major interests in hotels, an insurance company, Bulova, movie theatres, and Loliards, the nation's fourth largest tobacco company (Kent, Newport, True cigarettes). Brother Andrew Tisch has served as a Vice-President for the UJA-Federation, and as a member of the United Jewish Appeal national youth leadership cabinet, the American Jewish Committee, and the American Israel Political Action Committee, among other Jewish organizations. By September of 1986 Tisch's company owned 25% of the stock of CBS and he became the company's president. And Tisch -- now the most powerful man at CBS -- had strong feelings about television, Jews, and Israel. The CBS news department began to live in fear of being compromised by their boss -- overtly, or, more likely, by intimidation towards self-censorship -- concerning these issues. "There have been rumors in New York for years," says J. J. Goldberg, "that Tisch took over CBS in 1986 at least partly out of a desire to do something about media bias against Israel." [GOLDBERG, p. 297] The powerful President of a major American television network dare not publicize his own active bias in favor of another country, of course. That would look bad, going against the grain of the democratic traditions, free speech, and a presumed "fair" mass media. -

It is up to people like you to make certain that mankind retains responsibility for and control of his environment and does not let the world slide into a state of confusion merely for lack of thought or foresight.” – HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, 1962 The success at Oxford in 1956 did not appear, initially at least, to portend a second Conference. Indeed, the Oxford Conference trustees – the Council – met on November 23, 1956, to begin dismantling the body that had carried the day so well four months earlier. The minutes of that meeting, under the chairmanship of Sir Harold Hartley, record that the first order of business was the terms of reference “to supervise the final winding up of the Conference affairs by the end of 1956 if possible.” Trustees also resolved to “determine and to dispose of any surplus funds at the termination of the Conference.” The Finance Committee reported a balance of £12,458. 9s. 1d. at Barclays Bank. When presented with an estimate of nearly £4,000 to print 5,000 copies of the Conference Report (including “400 presentation copies to be signed by His Royal Highness”), it was agreed “in view of the surplus funds at the disposal of the trustees” to authorize a “first printing” of 6,000 copies, including 3,500 complimentary copies. -

VALIDITY DYNAMISM OF PERSONALITY TRAITS IN THE SELECTION CONTEXT A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Lian Shao August 2011 © 2011 Lian Shao VALIDITY DYNAMISM OF PERSONALITY TRAITS IN THE SELECTION CONTEXT Lian Shao Cornell University Based on the theoretical suggestion and empirical evidence of the idea of performance dynamism (i.e., that an individual‘s job performance changes with the passage of time), this paper argues that the criterion-related validity of selection devices (i.e., the correlation between any selection device‘s score and an individual‘s job performance rating) should not be treated as a constant but rather as a changing figure. Using personality tests on the Big Five traits (i.e., Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism) as example, this paper tries to explore how the magnitudes of personality traits as performance predictors might change over time based on the literature on the changes in job demands on motivation, stress- coping, socialization, and learning behavior—the aspects of a job most closely associated with personality traits—along with the studies on age-related changes in work motivation and coping strategies. Through meta-analytically examining the extent to which temporal variables operationalized in age or organizational tenure explain the significant variation in personality trait-job performance correlations across primary studies, this paper looks for evidence of criterion-related validity dynamism of the Big Five traits as one selection test assessed in the previous research. Although some hypotheses related to validity dynamism were not supported, this meta-analysis did indeed show that age explains some of the variability in findings for the Extraversion- and Agreeableness-job performance correlations. -

Direct or Virtual Banks expanded their reach with Tangerine and Simplii Financial both achieving two awards in 2019, including a joint award for Value for Money, and a solo award for Tangerine in the Recommend to Friends and Family category, where they continue to dominate in this category.
