The Ohio Memory Online Scrapbook will bring together historical materials from institutions around the state to create a large collection of primary source material that provides an overview of the historical experience in Ohio and illuminates specific moments in the state's history. The first phase of the project will cover Ohio history up to 1903. The project will culminate in a web site that celebrates Ohio's history, raises awareness of the state's finest historical collections and brings http://library.osu.edu/sites/staff/Newsnotes/nn022701.html (3 of 15) [6/22/2007 1:59:32 PM] Ohio State University Libraries: News Notes Online attention to Ohio's history in celebration of the state's bicentennial in 2003. The text and chart can be found at the following URL: /Staff/carpet.html New Exhibit at The Cartoon Research Library An exhibition of original Prince Valiant comic strips by Hal Foster (1892-1982) dating from 1938 to 1969, is featured in The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library's reading room gallery from February 22 through June 8, 2001. "Most people are astonished at the size of the original Prince Valiant pages," said Lucy Shelton Caswell, Professor and Curator of the library,. "They are more than three feet high and two feet wide. This size allowed Foster to include details that would not be possible today since comics are no longer printed full page. Also, the fact that Foster did Prince Valiant as a Sunday feature meant that he could spend more time on each page without having the pressure of the daily comic strip, too." Comic strip historian Robert C. Harvey describes Prince Valiant as an illustrated narrative because it does not have speech balloons. Indeed, Hal Foster's experience as an illustrator http://library.osu.edu/sites/staff/Newsnotes/nn022701.html (5 of 15) [6/22/2007 1:59:32 PM] Ohio State University Libraries: News Notes Online provided him with the technical expertise to create beautifully detailed drawings depicting King Arthur legends. Prince Valiant debuted on February 13, 1937, syndicated by King Features. Hal Foster drew it for more than forty years, with his signature last appearing on the page in 1980. It has continued to be drawn by Foster's long-time assistant John Cullen Murphy and it is now written by Cullen Murphy, the son of John Cullen Murphy. In addition to Hal Foster's Prince Valiant pages, the Cartoon Research Library has a fine collection of Murphy's original Prince Valiant comic strips that he donated in 1992. The entrance to the Cartoon Research Library is at the north end of the Wexner complex grid. Its regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Hours vary between terms. Time to Celebrate The Department of African American and African Studies and the Black Studies Library's are celebrating their 30th anniversaries. In the turmoil of the late 1960's and early 1970's, our University took the opportunity to increase awareness of the rich history and culture of Africa and African America. The Black Student Union (1968) was the first Black student organization to develop as a response to University policies regarding minority students, and began protests in an effort to bring the University into a position that was more accommodating to the largely here-to-fore ignored needs of minority students. By 1970, the BSU was no longer functioning, but was replaced by Afro-Am in January of 1970 which succeeded in paving the way for the University's Black Studies Department, and the Office of Minority Affairs. Also, February 2, 1970 saw the first issue of "Our Choking Times", the first Black Student Campus Publication. Afro-Am was succeeded by the All-African Student and Faculty Union. Today, the African Student Union continues to carry on the efforts of these previous http://library.osu.edu/sites/staff/Newsnotes/nn022701.html (6 of 15) [6/22/2007 1:59:32 PM] Ohio State University Libraries: News Notes Online organizations. • Adapting the Graphic Novel Format for Undergraduate Level Textbooks
ADAPTING THE GRAPHIC NOVEL FORMAT FOR UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL TEXTBOOKS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Brian M. Kane, M.A. Graduate Program in Arts Administration, Education, and Policy The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Professor Candace Stout, Advisor Professor Clayton Funk Professor Shari Savage Professor Arthur Efland Copyright by Brian M. Kane 2013 i ABSTRACT This dissertation explores ways in which the graphic narrative (graphic novel) format for storytelling, known as sequential art, can be adapted for undergraduate-level introductory textbooks across disciplines. Currently, very few graphic textbooks exist, and many of them lack the academic rigor needed to give them credibility. My goal in this dissertation is to examine critically both the strengths and weaknesses of this art form and formulate a set of standards and procedures necessary for developing new graphic textbooks that are scholastically viable for use in college-level instruction across disciplines. To the ends of establishing these standards, I have developed a four-pronged information-gathering approach. First I read as much pre factum qualitative and quantitative data from books, articles, and Internet sources as possible in order to establish my base of inquiry. Second, I created a twelve-part dissertation blog (graphictextbooks.blogspot.com) where I was able to post my findings and establish my integrity for my research among potential interviewees. Third, I interviewed 16 professional graphic novel/graphic textbook publishers, editors, writers, artists, and scholars as well as college professors and librarians. Finally, I sent out an online survey consisting of a sample chapter of an existing graphic textbook to college professors and asked if the content of the source material was potentially effective for their own instruction in undergraduate teaching.

Kane : The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion: 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Most Valiant Valuable EffortBy OwlEnthusiasm for super-heroes perhaps has never been higher. Movies about men and women who use extraordinary powers to fight evil, such as Superman and Wolverine, have millions of viewers around the world. Often, the most successful films explore the super-heroes' human aspects (such as in "The Dark Knight Rises") as much as their battles. Such contemporary knighthood---valor by complex, sometimes imperfect individuals in service of noble purposes---may be among the legacies of the magnificent illustrated epic, "Prince Valiant," created in the 1930s by Hal Foster and still the first thing many of us read in our Sunday newspaper."The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion" offers treasures for such readers. Perhaps foremost among these is the only comprehensive description of the stories in each of the 235 sequences between 1937 and 2009, such as #74, The Wanderer, #136, The Quest for Helene, and #204, The Shield of Achilles. These well-written summaries include
