For other University events, see OSU Electronic Calendars University News Releases onCampus University Research News Announcements Free Ohio Memory Project Workshops The Ohio Historical Society is working in conjunction with the Ohio Public Library Information Network (OPLIN), OhioLINK and the Ohio Library Council (OLC) to produce Ohio Memory, an online scrapbook of Ohio history. Every library, archives, museum and historical society has treasures in their collections, but these items are frequently known only to a few. The Ohio Memory Online Scrapbook will bring together historical materials from institutions around the state to create a large collection of primary source material that provides an overview of the historical experience in Ohio and illuminates specific moments in the state's history. The first phase of the project will cover Ohio history up to 1903. This spring OLC will present a series of regional workshops to inform institutions across the state about the project and encourage their participation. The text and chart can be found at the following URL: /Staff/carpet.html New Exhibit at The Cartoon Research Library An exhibition of original Prince Valiant comic strips by Hal Foster (1892-1982) dating from 1938 to 1969, is featured in The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library's reading room gallery from February 22 through June 8, 2001. "Most people are astonished at the size of the original Prince Valiant pages," said Lucy Shelton Caswell, Professor and Curator of the library,. "They are more than three feet high and two feet wide. This size allowed Foster to include details that would not be possible today since comics are no longer printed full page. Also, the fact that Foster did Prince Valiant as a Sunday feature meant that he could spend more time on each page without having the pressure of the daily comic strip, too." Comic strip historian Robert C. Harvey describes Prince Valiant as an illustrated narrative because it does not have speech balloons. Prince Valiant debuted on February 13, 1937, syndicated by King Features. Hal Foster drew it for more than forty years, with his signature last appearing on the page in 1980. It has continued to be drawn by Foster's long-time assistant John Cullen Murphy and it is now written by Cullen Murphy, the son of John Cullen Murphy. In addition to Hal Foster's Prince Valiant pages, the Cartoon Research Library has a fine collection of Murphy's original Prince Valiant comic strips that he donated in 1992. The entrance to the Cartoon Research Library is at the north end of the Wexner complex grid. Its regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Hours vary between terms. Studer, University Libraries' prior director, presented "The OhioLINK Consortium: A Case Study in Collective Licensing and Purchasing, Unmediated Resource Sharing, and Integration of Full Text and Secondary Datatbases" at Institute for Scientific Information Symposia in Beijing, September 25; Tokyo, October 30; and Seoul, Korea, November 2. Time to Celebrate The Department of African American and African Studies and the Black Studies Library's are celebrating their 30th anniversaries. In the turmoil of the late 1960's and early 1970's, our University took the opportunity to increase awareness of the rich history and culture of Africa and African America. The Black Student Union (1968) was the first Black student organization to develop as a response to University policies regarding minority students, and began protests in an effort to bring the University into a position that was more accommodating to the largely here-to-fore ignored needs of minority students. By 1970, the BSU was no longer functioning, but was replaced by Afro-Am in January of 1970 which succeeded in paving the way for the University's Black Studies Department, and the Office of Minority Affairs. Also, February 2, 1970 saw the first issue of "Our Choking Times", the first Black Student Campus Publication. Afro-Am was succeeded by the All-African Student and Faculty Union. Black Studies Department (Now the African-American & African Studies Department), originally established as an academic division in October 1969, obtained formal department status in 1972. Black Studies Library was dedicated on November 10, 1971.
