University of Pittsburgh, 2017 This research examines the persistence of violence towards indigenous Amazonians of Peru through this century. My analysis of the deep relationship between violence and invisibilization leads me to propose “defamiliarization” as a possible path to stop the violence against Amazonians. I contend that Amazonian violence has two basic forms: spectacular and everyday. The former consists of dramatic instances of open strife, like the Baguazo, an event that I analyze through three texts: a Sentencia, a testimony, and several interviews with the indigenous leader Santiago Manuim. I examine the latter, “everyday violence,” which describes general political indifference to the region through several communiqués from indigenous organizations, interviews with their leaders, and an analysis of The Green House by Mario Vargas Llosa. I contend that the root of both forms of violence lies in “invisibilization,” and by that I mean two seemingly opposed but reinforcing facts. On the one hand, the Amazonians are invisible to the rest of Peru, since they are largely absent from national history and literature. On the other hand, these absences facilitate the government's “hyper-visualization” of Amazonians. By “hyper-visualization,” I refer to the ubiquitous circulation of the image of Amazonians through tourist campaigns that misrepresent and stereotype them. The very limited research that exists casts Amazonians as victims, contributing to their invisibilization through the IV obliteration of their voice. In that regard, I develop the concept “forestism” to analyze the complex forms of making them invisibile. This dissertation seeks to challenge the aforementioned landscape by fleshing out the heterogeneous panorama of both forms of violence, as well as the diverse strategies employed by the Indians to confront them. Each chapter is a particular path to examine Amazonian peoples’ —agency— their own ways of making sense of their invisibility, and their own strategies for denouncing and confronting it, including irony, humor, and armed violence.     In ‘prison-house of love’i: The Bad Girl and bad girls of Mario Vargas Llosa Tajuddin Ahmed Netaji Subhas Ashram Mahavidyalaya, India Abstract Mario Vargas Llosa’s recent novel The Bad Girl centers around a sexually liberated woman who is in search of individual emancipation through transgressions of all social norms. The issue of female sexuality and its relation with woman liberation occupies an important and debatable position in Feminist discourse. Llosa’s own attitude to liberated female sexuality had been an ambivalent one. In this paper I would like analyse and explore the question of woman’s liberation in the novel of Mario Vargas Llosa, taking into account the major conflicting Feminist discourses as well as the presence and erasure of female sexuality in the history of Latin American novels. [Keywords: Sexuality, Transgression, Feminism, Identity, Emancipation, Oppression, Eroticism] One must wear one's vices like a royal mantle, with poise. Like an aureole that one is unaware of, that one pretends not to perceive. It is only natures entirely given over to vice whose contours do not grow blurred in the hyaline mire of the atmosphere. Beauty is a marvelous vice of form.ii The above representative fragment from a poem by Cesar Moro was used by Mario Vargas Llosa as an epigraph to his novel In Praise of the Stepmother (1988). The poem by Moro shows the poet’s personal obsession with two, “recurrent and related themes: a disdain for the rational elements and social conventions that censure the imagination and an exploration of forbidden experiences…” (Kristal, p.13).

It expands the narrative strategies that appeared in Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter and uses them to explore the situation of Amazonian Indians featured in The Green House. El hablador and Aunt Julia are alike in their use of postmodern problematics of writing; in both novels Vargas Llosa examines the "death of the author" motif, but here, instead of an autobiographical game, he critiques the problematic link between fiction and reality in order to examine important questions of marginality and social problems that remain hopelessly unresolved.

Comparing the city to the selva, the latter is virtuously superior, as true acts of kindness and humanity are being created in the selva. Standing out of the narrative mosaic, Bonifacia, an Aguaruna christened by nuns, abides the drama of an alienated, humiliated, abused woman in the context of the Peruvian machismo. Her life is a symbolic outline of the selva destiny in contact with civilization. Rezumat Prin intermediul romanelor sale, cu precădere prin „Casa verde”, scriitorul Mario Vargas Llosa evidenţiază tarele societăţii peruviene şi pseudo-civilizaţia acesteia. Comparând oraşul cu selva, ultima se dovedeşte a fi superioară din punct de vedere moral, de vreme ce adevăratele acte de bunătate şi umanitate se nasc în selvă. Ieşită în relief din mozaicul narativ, Bonifacia, o aguarună încreştinată de maici trăieşte drama femeii dezrădăcinate, meprizate şi abuzate în contextul machismului peruan. Viaţa ei este un rezumat simbolic al destinului selvei în contact cu civilizaţia.     Mario Vargas Llosa's Conversation in the Cathedral JOHN M. KIRK, University of British Columbia A recent review of the English translation of Vargas Llosa's third novel sums up a frequent misinterpretation of the Peruvian writer's work: ". a long layered tale about indolence, greed, violence, corruption, sexual perversion and general animal cunning in modern Peru." Since the appearance of his first novel, La ciudad y los perros (translated as The Time of the Hero) in 1963, many critics have focused their attention almost exclusively on the more sensational elements of his literary production, and Manuel Pedro Gonzalez's reaction ("the tiresome perversity of language typical of lavatories and brothels")2 is indicative of the attitude of many scholars. In part this can be explained by the succès de scandale generated by the public burning of a thousand copies of The Time of the Hero in the grounds of the Leoncio Prado Military College in Lima (setting for the novel), since this has undoubtedly haunted the reception of Vargas Llosa's subsequent work. This unfortunate process has been further abetted by the highlighting of the more "colorful" episodes in Vargas Llosa's novels, which has resulted in the impression that the writer's overriding concern is to show merely the sordid and perverse aspects of life in contemporary Peru. Without any doubt this strong—and at times overbearing—interest in the more unusual details of human sexuality is a common ingredient of Vargas Llosa's work, but fortunately, in the last analysis, this represents a relatively insignificant feature of his novels.
