From sitting in his office for our first ever advisor meeting freshman year, having the pleasure to learn and work alongside him in CMC’s Policy Lab, and, finally, completing my thesis with his guidance, my experience at CMC would not have been the same without him there. Thank you for always pushing me and helping me understand the value in a ‘Big Think,’ having my best interests as a both a student and individual at heart, and, most importantly, reminding me the value in slowing down and taking a breather. I have learned so much from you in the past four years.

Verein Innsbruck Band 90 S. 73 - 82 Innsbruck, Nov. 2003 First Study of Aerophytic Cryptogams on Monuments in Bulgaria by Georg GÄRTNER & Maya P. STOYNEVA*) Synopsis: The first study of aerophytic cryptogams from granite monuments investigated in the Bulgarian town Koprivshtitsa (Sredna Gora Mountains – 1058 m a.s.l.) compared with two iden- tical bronze and limestone copies in the capital town Sofia (650 m a.s.l.) is presented. Greenish lay- ers on the surface of one of the Koprivshtitsa monuments consisted of the aerophytic green alga Apatococcus lobatus together with free-living and lichenized green alga Trebouxia arboricola and the aerophytic green alga Coccomyxa sp. Some lichens as Lepraria cf. neglecta and Candelariella vitellina were also found. The same lichens together with further species like Protoparmeliopsis muralis var. muralis and Caloplaca sp. were detected on the surrounding stonework of the second Koprivshtitsa monument. On the surface of the calcareous statue in Sofia only some initial stages of Apatococcus lobatus were registered. The algal taxa have been studied in cultures and some com- ments on their taxonomy and distribution are given. Key words: aerophytic algae, lichens, granite, limestone, Apatococcus lobatus, Trebouxia arboricola, Bulgaria. 1. Introduction: Nevertheless that the algal, fungal, lichen and moss flora of Bulgaria has been well studied since many decades, the aerophytic cryptogams on monuments have not been inve- stigated (VODENICHAROV et al.

  • 'Forebears', 'Saints' and 'Martyrs': the Politics Of
‘Forebears’, ‘saints’ and ‘martyrs’: the politics of commemoration in Bulgaria in the 1880s and 1890s1 Stefan Detchev (West University, Bulgaria) Тhe memory of the Bulgarian national revolutionary movement, as in all other national ideologies,2 was not transmitted only in books.3 It was embodied in the images of ‘saints’ and ‘martyrs’ commemorated at specific places. This paper will focus on the importance of the cult of forebears and predecessors as a part of popular political culture in Bulgaria in the 1880s and 1890s. During this period it increasingly mattered how ordinary people felt about nationality. The importance of this problem increased because of the introduction of universal male suffrage which followed the Tărnovo constitution of 1879.4 In this regard attention will be paid to days of national commemoration usually organised at the places of execution of Bulgarian national heroes and where Bulgarian rebel detachments had had battles.5 These days of commemoration were cultural and discursive practices that constituted new identities, new definitions of patriotism and identification with the state. I will be arguing that the commemoration of dead leaders and great events from the past played a very important role in shaping popular historical memory as part of identity building which cannot be done without stories, signs and symbols.6 These rituals shaped the ways in which the national revolutionaries were perceived and imagined. They invented a nationalistic public tradition and fostered a form of patriotism specific to itself. In this way historical myths became a part of political mythology and they aided political mobilisation. The commemorations were the obvious sites for this to take place.

  • Annual Report ELA 2019
ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Every child deserves support in order to grow into a person responsible to itself, to the others and to the world around us FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Summarising 2019 would be difficult – conclusions, failures, achievements and plans seem to be one and the same, heavily mixed with stamina. If I should be using one word, it would be exactly this - stamina, but the word most impor- tant to me in 2019 is "grateful". I am grateful to my friends, my colleagues and my family for the support, the warmth and the faith. Last year was difficult for the Centre and so challeng- ing that there is no longer a Centre for Inclusive Education but an Association for Shared Learning. We have changed our name and parted with dear col- leagues, but we have not changed our nature. And it is in our nature to help, share and support. Living in uncertainty means living without knowledge, which has, so far, been key, without plans and, mostly, without control. These are difficult times in which we are learning many and sometimes unpleasant things about our- selves and about others. We take responsibility and slowly begin to get used to the almost unbearable discomfort of uncertainty. And we have become more procreative and coherent. At least this is what happened to us, to the associa- tion in which we share learning. It is surprising how many things we have managed to achieve in one year and how many changes we have managed to accept. We received a valuable inter- national award for our One School for All programme, held a successful camp for 130 children, published a book, bought a school and started transform- ing it into a green education centre..

NEW HAVEN, CONN. Foreword This outline of modern Bulgarian literature is the result of an exchange of memories of Bulgaria between the authors some years ago in New York. We both have visited Bulgaria many times, we have had many personal friends among its scholars and statesmen, and we feel a deep sympathy for the tragic plight of this long-suffering Slavic nation with its industrious and hard-working people. We both feel also that it is an injustice to Bulgaria and a loss to American Slavic scholarship that, in spite of the importance of Bulgaria for the Slavic world, so little attention is paid to the country's cultural contributions. This is the more deplorable for American influence in Bulgaria was great, even before World War I. Many Bulgarians were educated in Robert Col- lege in Constantinople and after World War I in the American College in Sofia, one of the institutions supported by the Near East Foundation. Many Bulgarian professors have visited the United States in happier times. So it seems unfair that Ameri- cans and American universities have ignored so completely the development of the Bulgarian genius and culture during the past century.
