At the conference, there was a collective recognition of the unfolding impact of digitalization on various aspects of social, cultural, and political life in South Asia. We had a keen sense of how much things had changed in the South Asian mediascape since the introduction of cable and satellite television in the late 1980s and early 1990s. We were also aware of the growing interest in media studies within South Asian studies, and hoped that the conference would resonate with scholars from various disciplines across the humanities and social sci- ences. -

This thesis seeks to identify the challenges to the Pakistan public and private electronic media sectors in terms of enforcement. Despite its importance and growth, there is a lack of research on the enforcement and regulatory supervision of the electronic media sector in Pakistan. This study examines the sector and identifies the action required to improve the current situation. To this end, it focuses on five aspects: (i) Institutional arrangements: institutions play a key role in regulating the system properly. (ii) Legislative and regulatory arrangements: legislation enables the electronic media system to run smoothly. -

FWU Journal of Social Sciences, Winter 2017, Vol.11, No.2, 127-138 “News As Infotainment: A Discourse Analysis of Top Pakistani Cable News Channels” Anbarin Fatima Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi In the twenty first century, television journalism has witnessed immense development and transformation. News agencies have emerged as global 24- hours news outlets. The news values and traditions have undergone considerable change making revenues generation a top priority. This was consequential upon using language and other semiotic resources like visuals and sound for incorporating entertainment, sensationalism, suspense and informality in news. Through these techniques viewers could be attracted and higher rating figures could be achieved. The broadcast news media industry of Pakistan has developed a lot after the 2002 media reforms under Musharraf’s regime. Vast changes have also been observed in both the style and contents of broadcast news. This research study focuses on increasing trend of infotainment in Pakistani broadcast news. Using the perspectives of linguistic and semiotic analysis, this study has documented that nowadays information is very much mixed with entertainment techniques to make news interesting, sensational and appealing for viewers. This reflects that the broadcast journalism has become profit oriented and therefore all possible resources are exploited to tailor a news discourse which is tinged with subtle infotainment. In the twenty-first century, “we navigate through a vast mass media environment unprecedented in human history” (Croteau & Hoynes, 2000). Digital media is fast establishing itself as the most widely used and most popular information/news source. Even it looks that the current battleground is smart phone because the growth in mobile use for news across many markets continues to accelerate (Newman et al., 2015). -

Challenges for Independent News Media in Pakistan A Report to the Center for International Media Assistance By Sherry Ricchiardi July 30, 2012 The Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA), at the National Endowment for Democracy, works to strengthen the support, raise the visibility, and improve the effectiveness of independent media development throughout the world. The Center provides information, builds networks, conducts research, and highlights the indispensable role independent media play in the creation and development of sustainable democracies. An important aspect of CIMA’s work is to research ways to attract additional U.S. private sector interest in and support for international media development. The Center was one of the of the main nongovernmental organizers of World Press Freedom Day 2011 in Washington, DC. CIMA convenes working groups, discussions, and panels on a variety of topics in the field of media development and assistance. The center also issues reports and recommendations based on working group discussions and other investigations. These reports aim to provide policymakers, as well as donors and practitioners, with ideas for bolstering the effectiveness of media assistance. Marguerite H. We learn most of the things like, culture, tradition, norms, and way of living, lifestyles from these channels. Different channels have different impact on the minds of the people of a society. In the said research comparative analysis of Pakistan Television and Geo Entertainment has been made. From both of these channels which one takes leads to entertain the public in a more defined and demanding way. The significant focus was to judge the level of entertainment provided by both the channels and how much those are successful to raise social issues and viewer’s perception about TV programs of PTV and Geo Entertainment channels. The Nature of the study was qualitative and quantitative. It was conducted at Satellite town block “A” Rawalpindi and sector “F-7/4” Islamabad. An interview schedule was designed and the sample of one hundred and twenty people was collected through systematic random sampling technique. Then data was analyzed through spss (version 14.0). According to findings, most people like the PTV home because it is still trying to show the original picture of Pakistani society whereas the Geo entertainment is liked by people of Islamabad as it gives the information about the new fashion around the Pakistan. -

Global Media Journal-Pakistan Edition, Volume XII, Issue II, Fall 2019 Trends of Television Viewership among Pakistani Channels: A Time Series Analysis from July 2014 – June 2018 Adeel Naqvi1 Abstract In Pakistan broadcasting is done through terrestrial, satellite and cable network. Broadcasting industry is growing, and some private TV channels have entered in this industry because cable industry has developed, and this is the most popular form of private TV channels transmission because it provides many channels at a cheapest rate. Researcher wants to investigate the television viewership trends among all types of Pakistani channels. Researcher collected secondary time-series data from various sources such as Gallup Pakistan and Aurora from fiscal year July 01, 2014 to June 30, 2018 then presents the line graph to show the different trends of Pakistani television channels viewership. Researcher analyzed trends in term of daily average television viewership hours, daily average television viewership hours according to cities and television viewership based on Pakistani channels categories. It has been found that daily average television viewership hours are decreasing in Pakistan as time go on. Television viewership on all channel’s categories are decreasing except Pakistani local entertainment channels. After analyzing television viewership trends, companies will come to know which types of channels, audiences are watching more. In this way, companies can change their advertising and other marketing tactics to grasp large amount of audiences. In December, 2012, 23 in-depth interviews were conducted with Pakistani media professionals, analysts, policy-makers and members of the telecommunications industry. In addition, 32 focus group discussions were conducted in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Quetta and Multan by a local Pakistani research agency on behalf of BBC Media Action. The group discussions took place simultaneously in all regions with multiple moderators.
