Polychronions in the Musical Manuscripts of Mount Athos Chapter 10: Polychronions rendered in double notation Conclusions Bibliography Facsimiles KEY-WORDS: polychronion, byzantine music, psaltic manuscripts The work presented here – The Polychronion in the Romanian Music of Byzantine Tradition from the XVIth Century Until Today (Polihronionul în muzica românească de tradiţie bizantină din secolul al XVI-lea până în prezent) – set up as a doctoral thesis under the guidance of Fr. Lect. Ph.D. Vasile Stanciu, amounts to a presentation of the musical genre of polychronions as a way of recognizing the continuity of the Byzantine culture and spirituality in the Romanian Countries. They can constitute a musical outline of the manner in which Mount Athos appreciated the substantial donations of the Romanian rulers. They represent as well the musical, ecclesiastical creation gathered in the chant books used in the course of time, part of them being the expression of the festal or anniversary moments in the life of the Church. The work is divided into nine chapters, preceded by a short Introduction, Preliminaries and followed by Conclusions. Every chapter is divided into subsections. The Introduction presents the theme under examination, setting off the importance of the polychronions, which are part of the sources of byzantine music; thus they can be considered true landmarks for dating some old manuscripts of psaltic music.

Oral Traditions of Italo-Albanian Communities in Sicily and Calabria1 Oliver Gerlach Abstract: The main difference with respect to the Balkans is that Italo-Greek as well as Arbëresh communities had been rural throughout the centuries. Hence, the community itself did the job of the choir during Orthodox celebrations, which became only possible in certain communities belonging to two Archdioceses of the Byzantine rite: Lungro in Calabria and Piana degli Albanesi on Sicily. Within the catholic church they were allowed to celebrate the Greek rite, but this became possible due to a new law in church administration which existed since the 18th century. The question if there did really exist a continuous oral transmission since the arrival of Albanian emigrants during the last decades of the 15th century, and in as far they adapted to local customs of the Italo-Byzantine tradition which had survived around the Archimandritates in Italy, has not been an issue of historical research yet.

    Nomination form International Memory of the World Register Boril’s Synodicon or Synodicon of King Boril (Palauzov’s Copy) 2014-19 1.0 Summary (max 200 words) The Boril`s Synodicon is the key document testifying about the anti-Bogomil Synod, convened by King Boril in 1211 in Tarnovo (Bulgaria). Compiled on the occasion of the Council, revised at the reign of Ivan Assen II and complemented in the late fourteenth century at the time of Patriarch Euthymius, it is a unique testimony of the official attitude against the heresies in Medieval Europe and of the liturgical use of this specific political and religious instrument in the medieval Slavic societies, as it influenced the Serbian and Russian redactions of the Synodicon. Dated to the reign of Ivan Shishman (1371–1395), it contains polyhronia, not known from other sources, to him, Queen Maria and Patriarch Euthymius. Besides the anathemas against priest Bogomil’s and other heretical teachings, the book contains beadrolls of high historical value with the names of Bulgarian rulers and clerics. According to its liturgical purpose, the copy is supplied with the unique Coronation Rite of a Queen.     Hierarchical Divine Liturgy NOTE: In most cases, only rubrics that are unique to the Bishop’s presence are noted here. After making three metanias in their respective places, the Priest and the Deacon bow together to the Bishop and then the Deacon says in a loud voice, “Bless, Master!” After the Priest completes, “Blessed is the Kingdom…” the Deacon and the Priest turn and bow together to the Bishop. The bow to the Bishop is repeated after every exclamation by the Priest. The Priest takes his place on the south side of the Holy Table facing north. The Deacon intones the Great Ektenia. At the commemoration of the Hierarchs, the Deacon turns, points his orarion and bows to the Bishop being commemorated while the Priest bows from the Royal Doors., and the choir quickly sings, "Eis polls eti, Despota." At the conclusion of the Ektenia, the Priest moves in front of the Holy Table to intone the exclamation. This process is repeated after each Ektenia. During the singing of the Antiphon, the first Deacon moves from the Icon of Christ back to his place near the Bishop, while the second Priest and second Deacon approach the Bishop, make one metania, ask the Bishop’s blessing and kiss his right hand. The second Priest proceeds through the Royal Doors and the second Deacon proceeds to stand before the Icon of the Theotokos. If there is only one Deacon serving, a Subdeacon may be asked to do this. If there is no Subdeacon, the Deacon remains in his place before the Icon of Christ and from there intones the two Little Ektenias.

All too often in my T readings I was coming across unfamiliar words, frequently in languages other than English. I began compiling a “small” list of terms and explanations to use as a reference. Since I was putting this together for my own use I usually copied explanations word for word, occasionally making a few modifications. As the list grew I began having trouble filling in some gaps. I turned to some friends for help. They in turn suggested this lexicon would be a good resource for the members of the Typikon and Ustav lists @yahoogroups.com and that list members maybe willing to help fill the gaps and sort out some other trouble spots. So, I present to you my lexicon. Here are some details: This draft version, as of 19 December 2001, contains 418 entries; Terms are given in transliterated Greek, Greek, Old Slavonic, Ukrainian, and English, followed by definitions/explanations; The terms are sorted alphabetically by “English”; The Greek transliteration is inconsistent as my sources use different systems; This document was created with MS Word 97 and converted to pdf with Adobe Acrobat 5.0 (can be opened with Acrobat Reader 4.0); Times New Roman is used for all texts except the Old Slavonic entries for which I used a font called IZHITSA; My sources are listed at the end of the lexicon; Permission has not been obtained from the authors so I ask that this lexicon remain for private use only.
