Oral Traditions of Italo-Albanian Communities in Sicily and Calabria1 Oliver Gerlach Abstract: The main difference with respect to the Balkans is that Italo-Greek as well as Arbëresh communities had been rural throughout the centuries. Hence, the community itself did the job of the choir during Orthodox celebrations, which became only possible in certain communities belonging to two Archdioceses of the Byzantine rite: Lungro in Calabria and Piana degli Albanesi on Sicily. Within the catholic church they were allowed to celebrate the Greek rite, but this became possible due to a new law in church administration which existed since the 18th century. The question if there did really exist a continuous oral transmission since the arrival of Albanian emigrants during the last decades of the 15th century, and in as far they adapted to local customs of the Italo-Byzantine tradition which had survived around the Archimandritates in Italy, has not been an issue of historical research yet. -

The equip¬ ment is being built in several machine-building enter¬ prises, and especially at Homan which has a great specia¬ lized unit producing about 50 types and sizes of wood¬ working machines including 13-20 ne'.v kinds, annually. Until 1970 the Homan works is to doable its output, by raising labour productivity,- scientific organization of production, and investment work under way. The Rocaaian wood-working equipment is diversified in keeping with the needs of the national economy no'w being covered 90 per cent from the domestic output. The Romanian units are building equipment from the simplest one - for mechanised log-cutting - to the complex wood¬ working plant in forest enterprises, rough conversion ana timber polishing in the most modern furniture units of tliis country. -

VASILE ADAMESCU KEEP FIGHTING in English by M.A.Christi PART I dedicated to my Mentors, Florica Sandu, Gheorghe Stancu and Georgeta Damian, whose devotion, love and lore gently led me to inner light; as also dedicated to all of the people – teachers or not – who, somehow or other, made the difference RURAL CHILDHOOD MEMORIES Up to the ‘60s, today’s commune Borcea – on the west bank of the Danube River, in southeastern Romania – was known as Cocargeaua. Baragan wheat field stretches there wide, closed in by Ialomița River and Danube’s Borcea Branch. A couple of hamlets go into the make of this commune, among which Buliga and Pietroiu; and the closest borough, Fetești, is a 20 minutes’ bus drive (14 km) south. As you enter the commune cottages line either side of the road: most ground floor only, porch or no porch, trimmed flower gardens and neat backyards – the homeowners’ true pride. This is where I was born, on September 5th, 1944, second child to Zamfir and Voica Adamescu, simple yet hardened farmers. Our cottage faced south to the braided river stretch, so got the sun hot dawn to dark. I then lived there with Mother, elder brother Ionică, and Stanca, Father’s mother. Dumitru and Mitu (Father’s brothers) lived across the lane bit to the right – you already passed by their houses to reach ours. Yet, to pass by Uncle Gheorghe’s house (where my cousins Ionică and Nicu live now) you would have to keep walking down the Main Road, to the heart of the village. -

9-11 SEPTEMBER 2021 Abstracts 2nd RICONTRANS Workshop ICONS IN MOTION: RUSSIAN RELIGIOUS ART, VISUAL CULTURE AND COLLECTIVE IDENTITIES IN THE BALKANS AND THE EAST MEDITERRANEAN LOCATION: UNIVERSITY OF BELGRADE | FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY The RICONTRANS project has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 818791) Visual Culture, Piety and Propaganda: Transfer and Reception of Russian Religious Art in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean (16th – early 20th century) https://ricontrans-project.eu/ The Russian religious artefacts (icons and ecclesiastical furnishings), held in museums, church or monastery collections in the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, constitute a body of valuable monuments hitherto largely neglected by historians and historians of art. These objects acquire various interrelated religious, ideological, political and aes- thetic meanings, value, and uses. Their transfer and reception constitutes a significant component of the wider process of transformation of the artistic language and visual culture in the region and its transition from medieval to modern idioms. It is at the same time a process reflecting the changing cultural and political relations between Russia and the Orthodox communities in the Ottoman Empire and its successor states in the Balkans over a long period of time (16th- early 20th century). In this dynamic transfer, piety, propaganda and visual culture appear intertwined in historically unexplored and theoretically provoking ways. RICONTRANS explores the thousands of Russian Icons and other religious art objects, brought from Russia to the Balkans from the 16th until the 20th century, preserved in monasteries, churches, and museum collections in the region.
