Notes from the Underground: a Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music
Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Stephen Graham Goldsmiths College, University of London PhD 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Signed: …………………………………………………. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption. -

BAD ALCHEMY 44 MC 1 2 NEW CONCEPTIONS OF JAZZ ? -
Music, Electronic Media and Culture About the Volume
Music, Electronic Media and Culture About the volume: There has never been greater public exposure to the musical products of electronic technology than there is today. Pubs, clubs, restaurants, banks and shops offer new environments for the experience of musical sound, in addition to the conventional concert hall. There are now many different ways to make music, and, thanks to the loudspeaker, many different ways of listening. This new world of musical sound and the questions it poses are explored in the nine essays that comprise this volume. At the heart of the collection is the myriad of confusing and exciting possibilities that are raised by sound that we hear but whose source we cannot see – the acousmatic. Part One of the book challenges the received wisdom of generations of writing on the acousmatic, providing new perspectives including an ecological view of human perception. The essays in Part Two explore the ways in which the history and plurality of culture has itself become the object of musical creativity in the form of sampling or plundering. In Part Three the potential fields of sound perception offered by the imagination are probed and given a ‘textual’ voice in Katharine Norman’s concluding essay to the volume. This uses the text itself as a medium for expressing the multi-layered reflections that a listener may have to ‘the work’ of music. About the editor: Simon Emmerson is Reader in Music at City University, London. A composer and writer, he was first prize winner at the Bourges Electroacoustic Awards in 1985 for his work Time Past IV. -

But guitar has been making a strong case for decades now and some of the most compelling players in jazz history have been six-stringers. New York@Night What makes the guitarist most interesting is that they often have the most 4 expansive view of jazz and its possibilities, saddled with less history and fewer Interview: Vic Juris archetypes. We feature three of them in this, our special Guitar Issue. George Benson (On The Cover) has been a polarizing figure, heir to the throne of Wes 6 by Ryan Blotnick Montgomery but willing to disappoint purists because of his crossover activities; Artist Feature: Mary Halvorson Benson plays Town Hall this month in support of his new (return-to-jazz) album Guitar Man. Vic Juris (Interview) got his start, like many of his kind, working with by Martin Longley 7 organists, but also absorbed the nascent fusion movement, establishing his On The Cover: George Benson credentials with Dave Liebman and as a leader and educator; Juris plays around by Bill Milkowski town several times this month. And Mary Halvorson (Artist Feature) has rightly 9 been described as a unique voice on her instrument, to which her various projects Encore: Lest We Forget: and appearances as a sideman attest; this month she plays with mentor Anthony 10 Braxton as well as leading or co-leading several typically wide-ranging projects. -

The Secret Gardeners: An Ethnography of Improvised Music in Berlin (2012-13) Tom Arthurs PhD Music The University of Edinburgh 2015 Abstract This thesis addresses the aesthetics, ideologies and practicalities of contemporary European Improvised Music-making - this term referring to the tradition that emerged from 1960s American jazz and free jazz, and that remains, arguably, one of today's most misunderstood and under-represented musical genres. Using a multidisciplinary approach drawing on Grounded Theory, Ethnography and Social Network Analysis, and bounded by Berlin's cosmopolitan local scene of 2012-13, I define Improvised Music as a field of differing-yet-interconnected practices, and show how musicians and listeners conceived of and differentiated between these sub-styles, as well as how they discovered and learned to appreciate such a hidden, ‘difficult’ and idiosyncratic artform.
