Mr. Beardsley was a former teacher and principal at Bakersfield School and served as Kern County Superintendent of Schools from 1874-77. Following his county superintendence, he went into farming and later donated an acre of land to establish Beardsley School District. Beardsley School began with two teachers, Louis Beardsley and C.M. Chadwick with an average daily attendance of 25 students. In 1883, Alexander B. MacPherson was added to the staff. Mr. MacPherson also served as Kern County Superintendent of Schools from 1883.

DUSD is comprised of eight K-5 elementary schools and three 6-8 middle schools. There are now over 7,000 students attending DUSD classes, and the growth rate is currently 2% per year. The district is currently operating on a modified year-round schedule with a single-track plan which offers shorter, more frequent vacations. Parents and staff are supportive of this innovative scheduling concept. Students are housed in modern, air- conditioned classrooms. Currently, winter and summer academies are offered for Migrant, G.A.T.E., and regular education students.

A spirit of unity prevails throughout the school district, city government, and community agencies. Leaders from all segments meet monthly as a formal body designated as the "Community Alliance." This is an active force of approximately 50 people who strongly support the school system. Other cooperative programs include the Healthy Start Program and the Neighborhood Partnership area around Valle Vista School. Business partnerships have been somewhat limited but are actively pursued. Mission Statement

The Edison School District mission is to maximize the intellectual, emotional, physical, and ethical development of every student. Each student will master basic skills, and develop a desire for lifelong learning. Each student will be taught responsibility and citizenship.

District Profile

The Edison School District was organized on January 9, 1911. Its territory was taken from the Fairfax and Rockpile School Districts. There had been a school district known by the name of Lakeview serving the area from 1896 to 1903, but it lapsed. The Edison School District took its name form the Southern California Edison Company, which at the time was developing power projects in the mountain areas above Edison. The school served 12 students its first year and remained quite small until the mid- 1930’s. In one year the school population nearly doubled, jumping from an average daily attendance of 79 in 1936-37 to 140 in 1937-38. These depression years, when migrant workers were flocking into the Kern County areas, brought spurts of growth. In the mid 1950’s, the district growth was substantial due to the extension of Bakersfield subdivisions into the Edison area. The average daily attendance of the district jumped from 225 in the 1954-55 to 505 in 1955-56. To serve additional students, the Orangewood School was built. Orangewood Elementary School is located near the boundary line separating the Edison School District from the Bakersfield City School District. Orangewood School first opened its doors in 1955. The Edison School District comprises about 48 square miles, largely agricultural and oil land, and has considerable potential for housing developments. Growth is being enhanced by commercial and industrial developments in the area.

Mission Statement

Making the difference.

District Profile

Fairfax School District was formed May 6, 1891. In its first year, 1891-1892 the average daily attendance was 8 pupils. The school was destroyed by fire in 1929, right after Christmas Vacation. Approximately 100 pupils and 3 teachers had just gathered on the first day back at school when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire was traced to a defective brick chimney resulting from a dynamite blast set off nearby in oil exploration activity.

Fairfax remained a small rural school until the late 1930's when it tripled in size going from an average daily attendance of 102 in 1934-35 to 312 in 1938-39. This rapid growth came as a result of many farm laborers coming into the area during the depression years. At times the student population would double overnight due to the seasonal influxes of migrant families. Large tents would be put up and temporary teachers were hired, as needed. School bus service began in 1936 when an old Reo bus was purchased from the Kern County High School District.

An earthquake in 1952 rendered Fairfax School unfit for occupancy. This led to the construction of the present Fairfax School.

By the 1960s the average daily attendance for the District was 807. Currently the average daily attendance for the District nears 2000. Fairfax became a grade 4 – 8 school in 1999. In 2005 it became a grade 6-8 school and was renamed Fairfax Middle School.

The Virginia Avenue School opened in January, 1953, with eight classrooms and the present cafeteria. Virginia Avenue became a k-4 school in 1999 and a K-2 school in 2005. Shirley Lane Elementary School opened in 2005. Six classrooms were added in 2006 to accommodate the rapid growth in the district. Shirley Lane Elementary is a grade 3-5 school.

General Shafter School was founded in 1904 on land donated by the Kern County Land Company. It was named for General William R. Shafter, a Spanish-American War Veteran who lived nearby. The original enrollment was 10 students. Today, it serves approximately 200 students, kindergarten through eighth grade. In 2004, the district celebrated its centennial. In 2006-07, the students and staff were moved to a new site 1/2 mile west on Shafter Road to a new site donated by the Peter Delis family. On behalf of the Greenfield Union School District, I would like to welcome you to our district. Our devoted community, employees and 8,200 Kindergarten through 8th grade students take great pride in our schools, unmatched throughout our county and state. We are a dynamic community in south Bakersfield, totally dedicated to children and focused on the whole child. Our Board of Trustees has set the tone for developing the excellent reputation Greenfield Union School District currently enjoys. Our excellent and comprehensive elementary school programs, after school programs, working relationship with our local universities, innovative and effective business practices, and partnerships with our business community serve as our foundation for educating each child.

Operating 10 schools (7 elementary and 3 middle schools), Greenfield Union School District is experiencing growth of approximately 4%-5% per year. It is anticipated that an estimated 2000 homes will be constructed within the next 5 years increasing our enrollment to an estimated 10,400 students. Two new elementary schools will open during each of the next two years with a fourth middle school planned for the near future.

The cultural diversity within our district demands a highly qualified work force including teachers, administrators, classified staff, and other support staff. We take great pride in providing our children the most qualified teachers and support staff possible. This fact is the foundation for the annual increase in our Academic Performance Index (API) for the State of California Content Standards.

Our commitment to meeting the expectations of today's society is evident as outlined within our Greenfield Union School District Mission and corresponding Value Statements. Our desire to educate the "whole child" has resulted in the development of several supplemental programs including Migrant/ELD, Pre-School Ready to Start Program for 4-year-olds, After School Success Program (ASSP), and a School Resource Officer (SRO). The Kern High School District is the largest 9-12 high school district in the state with more than 37,000 students. The District offers a wide array of instructional, athletic, extra-curricular and career & technical programs to help these students to continue the District's long "Tradition of Excellence."

In 2006-07, District trustees enacted a new "Ninth Grade Promotion Policy" to encourage freshman success. In 2007-08, the District has instituted a new "Freshman Academy" program to assist students entering high school below grade level in various skills such as reading and math. The effectiveness of the new "Ninth Grade Promotion Policy" was evident in district statistics that showed greater academic achievement among 2006-07 freshmen. We expect the new "Freshman Academy" program to result in even greater academic achievement for District freshmen.

The District will continue to maintain rigorous classes in other areas reflected in the improvement for the sixth straight year on the State's Academic Performance Index. Additional opportunities for classroom success will also be found in an increased number of classes provided through the District's GATE, Honors, International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement classes.

The KHSD offers a wide array of Academies, electives and other programs with which to launch a career either immediately upon graduation or after attending college. The KHSD has long been a leader in California's School-To-Career Academy Movement. The KHSD currently operates 12 such academies that combine career-specific electives with core classes into which career skills are infused. With renewed support from the state for School-To-Career academies, a significant increase in the number of KHSD Academies can be expected.

District athletic teams continue to distinguish themselves in California Interscholastic Federation competition. District teams competing in such programs as Mock Trial, "We The People..." and Academic Decathlon continue to grow in prominence in state and nationwide programs.

Success achieved in all of the above areas will be due in large part to the efforts of one of the finest assemblages of teachers to be found at any school district in California. The district has long prided itself on recruiting and retaining the best teachers to be found anywhere in the nation. These efforts have resulted in a staff of more than 1,700 highly qualified teachers fully committed to educating the young people of Kern County.

The school changed to its current K-6 status when a separate junior high was created in Fall, 1985.

Woodrow W. Wallace Junior High School separated from Wallace Elementary in 1985. The junior high and the elementary school share the same campus, but they are now considered separate schools.

In addition to building more classroom facilities as enrollment increased, a gymnasium was added to the campus in 1978. To accommodate the increase in student population at the school site a new library building was added in July1990.

District Profile

Muroc Joint Unified School District is a K-12 unified school system of approximately 2300 students, located in the Mojave Desert approximately 110 miles northeast of Los Angeles. It was founded as an elementary school in 1911, with one teacher and less than a dozen students. The school house was located at Edwards. Boron students were bussed to the air base for their education. As the area became more populated, another school was established in 1929, in Boron. The schools became a unified district in 1953, encompassing 578 square miles in Kern and San Bernardino counties.

The District serves the communities of Boron, North Edwards and Edwards Air Force Base, and maintains six school sites: two comprehensive high schools; one alternative high school; one middle school (part of the Desert High School campus); one junior high school (part of the Boron High School campus); one K-6 elementary school; one K-2 elementary school; and one 3-6 elementary school. All of these schools have been awarded "California Distinguished School" status.

Muroc students have been a continual source of pride. From the early mining and flight test eras to today, they have netted top awards in everything from leadership and scholarship, to sports and fine arts. Over the years, a good number of our students have returned as fully credentialed teachers, to teach with sincere concern in the district and the area where they grew up. District Profile

The started with the donation of one acre of land from Bob Norris' homestead. The District was formed and the boundary established in 1880. In 1882 the first Norris School was built. This first school was a one room red structure that can still be seen at Pioneer Village, Kern County Museum. Students arrived to school on horseback or on horse drawn vehicles over narrow dirt roads. Drinking water came from a hand pump, a bucket and a communal dipper. A wood stove heated the room that contained students from grade levels first through eighth.

The original building was used for 32 years before it was moved to the Rosedale Ranch where it was used for grain storage until it was presented to Pioneer Village in 1959. In 1917 there were 196,000 one-room schools in the United States. Today there are 400 such schools. At Norris we want to maintain the one-room school atmosphere. An atmosphere where there is a bond between students and their teachers, with a high degree of parental involvement and a sense of loyalty between our community and the schools that serve them. Approximately sixty percent of district students and their parents qualify for services through the district migrant programs. Much of the employment in the area is seasonal farm labor related.

District Profile

Established in 1915, the Wasco Union High School District serves the northwest region of Kern County in California. With an area of over 800 square miles, the district is one of the largest in the county. Comprised of four elementary feeder districts, Wasco Union Elementary, Maple, Semitropic, and Lost Hills, students attending the Wasco Union High School District come from rich and diverse backgrounds. Students enjoy the use of a single comprehensive high school, Wasco Union High School, located on 40 acres in the heart of the city of Wasco. The focal point and pride of the campus is the Wasco High School Auditorium which was built in 1928 and placed on the National Register of Historical Places in September of 1997.

There is also a 120 acre Ag Farm located on Leonard and Highway 46 which is used by those involved in the Ag and FFA programs. Independence High School, the district's alternative high school, is located on approximately 3 acres about a mile south of the main campus. A joint powers agreement with the North Kern Vocational Training Center, located adjacent to the WUHS district office, assists in providing our students with a continuous opportunity for participating in outstanding vocational educational programs.

The city of Wasco is a growing, vibrant community located in the heart of the most diversified agricultural region in the world with a population of nearly 21,000. Wasco's economy is based primarily on agriculture production and agricultural related industries. In addition to agriculture, a number of manufacturing plants engage in the production of asphalt and concrete pipes, farm tools and equipment, human and animal foodstuff, nursery crops, and bulk materials delivery. The multitude of rose fields cloak the Wasco community in a coat of many colors. The scent of the roses permeates the air making Wasco a beautiful place to live.
