The city has a relatively quiet period now with the schools on holiday and the major international festivals only starting in August, so it is a good opportunity to see the sights and soak up the atmosphere, hopefully without too much rain. There is a really exciting conference programme with 132 oral or poster presentations covering a very wide range of environmetrics topics. There are many countries represented at the conference and there will be good opportunities to forge new relationships and develop international research – maybe an important consideration in post-referendum Britain. The opening plenary talk uses telemetry data to deduce animal movement patterns and the closing plenary looks at the role of Bayesian priors in real- world environmental problems including conservation of threatened species. We also look at spatial patterns in environmental influences on human health in two plenaries, one on more general population environmental exposure and the other specifically looking at particulates and pregnancy outcomes. The complexity of human-environmental interactions is addressed in the remaining plenary which considers the concept of “integrated risk” and how it may transform our current sustainable development dialogue.

    Now there are even more breweries It’s official - there are more breweries than ever. Figures released by the Campaign for Real Ale confirmed that at the last count there were 1147 breweries in the UK, an increase in a year of 190, and a percentage increase of 14%. Remember - this is at a time when we are still struggling with the effects of one of the longest downturns in economic activity for many year. In fact during the worst months of the recession the numbers were still increasing. In Scotland the number of new breweries is now 76, an increase of 9 over the previous year. One thing that is striking about the new entrants is their variety, and where they are. While some are understandably concentrated near the centres of population - one of the commonest places to find such a brewery is on an industrial estate - others are right out in the countryside. What they have in common is a desire to bring original ideas to the craft and science of brewing, not forgetting an insistence on authentic ingredients, and as much local sourcing as possible. There is another noticeable feature about this growth in breweries. It is being replicated in many parts of the world, from Scandinavia to the United States. Furthermore it appears to have been largely unexpected, with conventional ideas about the brewing industry predicting, until recently, yet more concentration in the business. On top of the nerd factor, you have the spook factor of the Mackenzie Ghost. I love to simply wander in the graveyard and get away from the throngs of tourists around Greyfriar's Bobby. These tours are a wee bit kitschy, and not for everybody's taste. But, after taking their graveyard tour twice, I can highly recommend it as good for both history buffs and thrill seekers. Sadly, nobody on my tours spotted the Mackenzie ghost, but I did see something very strange myself: a black shadow in the shape of a six foot tall man. It was watching me too Needless to say, the experience was thrilling for me! You will find great live music at the Royal Oak, but be aware - this bar is tiny! The bar is quite close to the Royal Mile, and is an old favourite of the locals. The park located next to the University is quite a pleasant one for walking. You may find small vans selling food, buskers singing songs, and dogs fetching sticks. Then make your way through the university for a glimpse of the architecture and student life.
