I congratulate all of you on what you have accomplished. To the graduates and to those heading off to complete their degrees at one of the other two Colleges, I and all the staff wish you well. What you have learned at Royal Roads will stay with you for the rest of your lives and this will become more and more apparent to you as the years go by. Keep on learning, keep on working hard and keep the standards high. And wherever your careers may take you as a member of the regular or reserve forces, don't allow yourself to be lulled to sleep by the long period of peace and prosperity that this great nation of ours has enjoyed. • YARDBIRDS, 10Cc, & Graham Gouldman
YARDBIRDS, 10CC, & GRAHAM GOULDMAN by Alan L. Chrisman The Yardbirds were a legendary British Blues-rock band in the 60’s. Especially because three well-known guitarists came out of one band at one point or another: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. They started out as a blues band, replacing The Stones at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, England. But Clapton left the band in ’65 because he didn’t like their commercial direction and he joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, to be replaced by Page and later, Jeff Beck, who was known for first experimenting with guitar feedback. The Yardirds also make an appearance in Antonioni’s film, Blowup in 1966. Their first big commercial hits though, “ For Your Love” and “Heart Full of Soul’”were written by songwriter, Graham Gouldman. The still-teenage Gouldman, very influenced by The Beatles, had original planned to give them his song, “For Your Love” , but that night the Yardbirds were opening for The Beatles and he gave it to Jimmy Page instead and it became The Yardbirds’ first big hit. Gouldman also wrote several hits for The Hollies (“ Bus Stop”, “Look Through Any Window”), Herman’s Hermits ( “No Milk Today”) and many others. He briefly replaced, Wayne Fontana of The Mindbenders after their hit, “The Game of Love”, where he met his future 10cc bandmate, Eric Stewart. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme would then join Stewart and Gouldman under the name, Hotlegs and have an international single with “Neanderthal Man” in 1970. The four would then form the art-rock band 10cc.

An Old Highland Fencible Corps The History of the Reay Fencible Highland Regiment of Foot, or Mackay's Highlanders 1794-1802 With an Account of its Services in Ireland during the Rebellion of 1798 BY CAPTAIN I. E., LL.D., &v. CHIEF OF THE CLAN MACKAY, THIS HISTORY OF " REISIMEID MHIC AOIDH" IS RESPECTFULLT DEDICATED PREFACE. AT the present time, when so many histories of regiments I in existence are being written, I have been induced to set down one with a dealing Highland corps long since dis- banded and the force to which it belonged wellnigh forgotten. The services rendered to their country by the Fencibles throw an interesting sidelight on a critical period of British >ry, 'when wars with France were frequent, and the ambition of Napoleon threatened to overwhelm every country in and Europe, reduce them to the domination of France" Raised for the most in part Scotland, these corps, which were m reality regular but for the troops internal protection the country an only, played important part in the defence of our islands, of worthy more notice than has hitherto been accorded them. The limited service of the Fencibles, debarring them as from participating in the events stirring then passing Europe, has led to many believe that their life was in uneventful onsequence and not worthy of notice.

Previously she has worked at the Centre for Ethics in Medicine at the University of Bristol and the Centre for Social Ethics and Policy at the University of Manchester. Before becoming an academic she practiced (briefly) as a medical doctor in general medicine and accident and emergency. In the intervening years she has forgotten more medicine than she ever learned. Her research is explicitly interdisciplinary and often focuses on the philosophical analysis of law and policy in medicine and the biosciences. This includes elements of doctrinal legal analysis combined with matters of practical ethics. She is interested in the regulatory and social contexts in which scientific and medical innovation takes place. Her current research focuses on two main strands. The first is the use of the behavioural sciences in law and policy. The second is on property rights and human biomaterials. She is in the process of finishing a monograph on this second area. The book offers a philosophical and legal analysis of the relationship between the concept of self-ownership and ownership of separated biomaterials. Jennifer has previously worked as a solicitor in private practice specialising in Environment & Safety Law and she joins us from Northumbria University where she established ‘The Environmental Law Project’, a pro bono legal clinic for environmental cases, and taught on the undergraduate, LLM, LPC and BPTC programmes.
