You will possibly have one of your best cups of coffee in your life here, fresh from the plantations down the road. After lunch, explore the busy Mt Hagen Markets to see the amazing variety of produce on offer in this bountiful Eden. Your guide will show you where to taste the best strawberries, what types of banana and other varieties of tropical fruits to taste, as you marvel at the variety of taro, tapioca, yam and other root vegetables. You will also get to wander amongst some of the village farms to see how the Highlands have become famed as one of the cradles of agriculture in the world, with over 9,000 years of history. Situated at 2800m above sea level, the lodge has spectacular views of the surrounding Highlands. We’ll spend the day today visiting villages throughout the Western Highlands, experiencing the incredible culture. In Pogla village the tradition of the Mudmen has been revived. Strange and scary scenes depict how a mistreated village exacted revenge on their antagonists, with the chance for you to participate and wear the masks towards the end of the performance. Moving on to Tokua Village we’ll see a traditional greeting and challenge, and learn the significance that sorcery has in the original animist religions of the area. We get a taste of traditional village life now, and see how the natives lived as recently as 60 years ago. Marvel how quickly a fire can be made and at how they construct their houses. In Avii village we are introduced to the spirit boys, who perform the skeleton dance for us. Your guide elaborates how the fierce tribal warriors of the Highlands fought pitched battles to determine land domination and resources.
