Throughout the competitions, each 25 minute ♫ Blues Travels performance was judged in five categories – blues content, vocal talent, ♫ Corporate Affiliates instrumental talent, originality and stage presence – by the same criteria as is used at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Cover charges and raffle fundraising provide support for travel and accommodation expenses for the winning OBS representatives. Approximately $3,800 has been raised to date and a final fundraising event ‘Firebelly Goes To Memphis’ is scheduled for Wednesday, November 21 at Irene’s Pub. Firebelly is a modern blues outfit dedicated to fostering Blues and Roots music into the future, while respecting its rich traditions. The other finalists included Bluestone, Lil’ Al’s Notes Combo, Steve Groves & the Wit Shifters, the Brothers Chaffey and Jeff Rogers ♫ Summer Festival Photos & the All Day Daddies. Ottawa’s JW- Jones was MC for the event and six blues enthusiasts gave IBC & KBA up an evening to choose the bands that would advance to Maple Blues Awards the final event on Thursday, October 2, at Tucson’s. Judges Bob Cabana (owner of Ottawa’s FabGear64), Bluesy Christmas Gifts James Doran (organizer of the ‘Blues on the Rideau’ News about Blues series) and Todd Bernard (from DAWG-FM, Canada and Blues Summit 2009 North America’s 1st all blues commercial radio, expected to hit the airwaves by Summer 2009), for Semi-Final Ottawa Bluesfest photos Round #1, and Alan Marsden (director of the Ottawa Passings Folklore Centre School of Music), Yves Trottier (DAWG-FM Program Director) and Diane Wells (host of CKCU-fm’s ‘Iron Maidens’), for Semi-Final Round #2, had their own ‘blues challenge’ choosing two finalists each night. Advancing to the Finals were Elyssa Mahoney & Lucas Haneman and Wicked Grin, and Phlegm and MonkeyJunk. This local ‘Band’ category competition is Ottawa’s first time participation in the prestigious Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge, and looks to become an annual event. More specifically, finding and hiring African American instructors whose musical genealogy can be delineated from “black” oral/aural histories and can draw from these historicities. Unless the narratives of this music are unpacked, analyzed and taught from its internal elements, which embodies the symbiosis and synthesis of African American dance, theatrics, poetics and American black English that encapsulates the “African American-ness” in jazz, then there remains a risk that this folk music will become more and more diluted. Consequently, it is my belief that current music educators across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) should consider alternative methods of pedagogy if students are to understand the historicity— the historical authenticity of this African American folk music. The idea for this study originated from my observation of a lack of “African American- ness”—African American narratives not being used as a pedagogical tool in post-secondary jazz curricula across the GTA.     Hi Everyone! Summer is here and we've finalized our July/August shows. There are two newly booked shows; bluesmen Garrett Mason and Keith Hallett in late August and Alex Cuba is coming back in November. The coming week and a half will see 4 performances with great high energy live shows coming. The 6th and 11th bring some blues our way (from N'Orleans and Kansas), Searson Band from the Valley will release their latest CD Fade and Shine and The Bright Light Social Hour will light it up on the 10th. The next Soundcheck is July 25th. Soundcheck is our version of an open mic hosted by Mike McCormick. There is no cover charge and it will be a monthly event. HVAC plans are still being worked on and the permit for the new fire exit path is underway. We're also going to upgrade our tables (they'll look close to the same and be alot sturdier ;-) Friday July 6th; Jumpin' Johnny Sansone - New Orleans ($20) On the ever-reliable advice of Steve Marriner, we booked Jumpin Johnny Sansone on the first Friday of Bluesfest...in case you're a blues fan who's not planning on making the trip into Ottawa for Blues this year! Johnny plays guitar, harmonica & accordion. His songwriting is often awarded and acclaimed and his voice seems made to sing the Blues. 'The Lord is Waiting and the Devil is Too' was voted song of the year at the 2012 Blues Music Awards. July 7th; SEARSON Fade and Shine CD Release - The Valley ($20) nearly sold out Energetic and upbeat, Searson has been a refreshing and exciting change at every festival, theater and live concert performance.

Spring 2009 It's difficult to describe in words the feeling a musician gets Inside the e-news when walking down Beale Street. For me, just thinking of all the blues, soul, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll heroes who walked the same steps down the same street was enough to give me IBC shivers. Then a wave of smokey barbeque wafts into the street and a Muddy Waters tune blasts out of a speaker and Maple Blues Awards the street is painted with the bright neon lights from all the clubs. It was a beautiful assault on the senses. Blues Summit 2009 Just being part of the competition was a thrill. I was proud to Blues in the Schools represent Ottawa along with my monkey-mates Tony and Matt.
