George ‘Mitch’ Mitchell

The Mitch Mitchell Award is presented by the Markham-Unionville Rotary Club each year at the Markham Jazz Festival. Mitch was one of the original founders of the Jazz Festival, and Past President of the Markham-Unionville Club. He was an accomplished musician who had a wonderful love of life and music - especially Jazz. The award, a plaque and cash in memory of Mitch, is presented to an up-and-coming young jazz performer. This year, the 2017 award is presented to Isabella Santiago. Eighteen-year-old vocalist Isabella attends Markham District School Board in the York Region District School Board, where she has been the front singer for choirs and jazz bands during her high school years. A composer, she also writes much of her own music and has performed some YouTube videos with other artists, as well as singing with other jazz combos in the area. She is a multi-award winner, both nationally and elsewhere. You can catch Isabella performing “Mack the Knife“ here: MVI_0828.MOV Isabella is planning to pursue post-secondary studies in the New Media Program at Ryerson University in the fall. Isabella was nominated by Mark Caswell, head of the Music Department at MDHS. Congratulations, Isabella! We know you have a great future in front of you!
