by Tad Hendrickson

os Angeles-based guitarist Grant Geissman is causing quite a stir with all the nasty things he’s saying about the smooth jazz Lformat, which had once been very good to him. These days Geissman’s day job is doing the music for the TV show “Two And A Half Men” and he still maintains a career as a studio musician. A favorite at the JazzWeek offices, Geissman’s newly released Say That! is a smooth sounding jazz record that recalls classic groove- based jazz from the ’50s and ’60s – and there’s not a wind chime anywhere on it.

JazzWeek: I’ll get to the music in a minute, but I have to say that the pack- aging blew me away. Grant Geissman: Oh thank you. We essentially wanted to recreate that same kind of feel of great packaging they had in the ’50s and ’60s. That’s back when people not only had cool stuff to listen to but also cool stuff to look at and read. I found this incredible artist named Miles Thompson who did all the amazing images for the album. He’s actually part of a group that was influenced by Jim Flora, who did a lot of classic album covers in the late-’40s and ’50s. And you did a gatefold sleeve. Yeah. It’s not very popular here, but they do that in Japan a lot. I finally found a company that could make one. Everyone wants to make some variation of the jewel case, so it took a while. It’s a perfect square, like a shrunken down album. The other thing was that I liked putting a record on that had some in- sightful liner notes to read. Bill Milkowski was suggested to me and he did a really great job. We also put a facsimile of the music sheets in there as well. I don’t know if anyone has ever put a whole chart inside a record, but I thought continued ... jazzweek.com • Jan. 30, 2006 JazzWeek 11 Q&A: Grant Geissman (continued)

But in terms of it was kind of fun to do. Why go through all the trouble? smooth jazz ... It was born out of the frustration, not only with the horrible lame music heard it has become on smooth jazz radio but also packaging frustration that everything was in these plastic wrapped jewel boxes. It just seemed weird to me. muzak with It also strikes me as a record that looks like it was made by a Californian. a trademark. The bright colors and the art suggest someone who didn’t come from, say, So as a Brooklyn. Maybe not. Miles is sort of a surfer dude and I’m from California, although I “ player, there love going to New York and miss it if I don’t get back a couple of times a year. is nothing What has been the early word on the record? I’m almost afraid to say it, but the word has been very supportive. I don’t want there for me to jinx it, but there have been raves. anymore. Was there concern on your part about how it would be received? I guess I was concerned that someone would say something like, “Who does he think he is trying to make a jazz record?” That was my biggest fear, but I hoped that I had the chops to pull it off. Who knows what people are going to think? You just never know until you throw it out there. Especially when I have this message that goes along with it, which is that it’s hard to imagine smooth jazz could get any lamer or more watered down. I’m out of that world and burned that bridge big time. Why did you do it? Because there just isn’t enough music in [the genre] for me. Not enough play- ing; not enough writing. I looked back to what made music fun for me and we ended with this Wes Montgomery, Jimmy Smith and kind of thing, which is how the record turned out. Was there a straw that broke the camel’s back with you and smooth jazz? I don’t know if there was any one straw. It was more of the continued constric- tion of the format to where people who can barely play their instruments can make a smooth jazz record that will be played on the radio and be phenome- nally successful. That makes no sense. What attracted to you to the smooth jazz format ? I come from both the pop side and the jazz side. The reason I picked up the guitar was that I fell in love with when I was a kid. But having said that, I played in big bands all through high school and college. I also or- ganized little jazz bands out in the garage half the time and the other half of the time I played in rock bands out there. So I enjoy both sides. But in terms of smooth jazz, and we say this in the liner notes, it has become muzak with a

trademark. So as a player, there is nothing there for me anymore. Before too long the format is going to implode from eating its own tail. Your first album was a straight-ahead effort for Concord. Why move away from that into the smooth idiom? I was working for Chuck Mangione at the time, so I was doing a lot of writ- ing in the pop-jazz idiom and I wanted to get that music recorded. So I just stepped off the jazz path to do this hybrid thing – I don’t want to call it smooth jazz because that’s only a recent thing. Your last hit (1998’s “Did I Save?”) really wasn’t a clas- sic smooth jazz-sounding track. The thing was, half the stations were consulted by Broad- cast Architecture at that time. They did not recommend that track – there was too much soloing and too many notes in the guitar solos – so they weren’t into the track. The other half of the stations embraced it, which kind of embarrassed Broadcast Architecture into recommending it. I kind of like that. One could say that BA is the evil empire. They don’t care about music one bit. They care about cranking up the rating and generating advertising dollars. If all the smooth jazz labels and artists went away tomor- row, they wouldn’t care as long as the ratings went up. Smooth jazz could now morph into an oldies easy listen- ing format. How is doing TV show music different than trying to function under the constraints of Broadcast Architec- ture? It’s all in service to the picture, but that is to be expected. Scoring film or TV really isn’t about music, it’s about making the best music you can make while serving the needs of the picture, which it the most impor- tant thing. What appeal does that have for you as a musician? Creatively speaking, it’s always interesting to try and make something work with the picture and the predefined time frame. Was the theme song for “Two And A Half Men” a song to begin with? No, the longest version of it was 22 seconds. Often they use a six-second ver- sion. The theme was set in stone, but I wanted to come up with something we could play on. So I wrote a bridge that I liked and decided to put it on the re- cord. It’s a fun and jaunty kind of thing to play. JW jazzweek.com • Jan. 30, 2006 JazzWeek 13 Reviews and Picks
