5 www.internationalschoolalgarve.com Healthy food

Meals served in the dining room have an important role in the promotion of health in the school community. A healthy diet is a key factor to the academic performance of students. Many children and young people spend most of their day at school and at times the only “hot meal” of the day. Therefore, the school considers that the meals served in the school dining room should be healthy, hygienically safe and should fulfill the nutritional and energy needs of all students.

The amount needed for a healthy diet varies from person to person, taking into account their age, weight and the health of each individual as well as the amount of physical activity practiced. It is therefore a concern on the school to supply healthy foods, such as: meat, eggs, vegetables, pasta, etc. The introduction of soup in food should be encouraged from childhood, so that it can become a lifelong habit and a source of healthy nutrients. “Empathy” between the child and soup is created when it is introduced and consumed in a pleasant environment and should not be imposed as an obligation or punishment. The example given by parents, family and teachers facilitates this process.Soup is an excellent food for the introduction of vegetables at meals and should be consumed before a meal. Its use, in addition to the nutritional value, promotes satisfaction, appetite control and improves digestion.

The variety of vegetables used makes it very easy to vary the composition and hence the flavour and colour of soups, avoiding the monotony, a frequent reason why children refuse to eat soup.

Vegetables are foods whose main function provide the body with correct amounts of vitamins, minerals, water and soluble fiber. Several studies have shown the benefits of the consumption of such foods: improves blood lipid profile, reduces the absorption of sugar, prevents the onset of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, among others. Some of these foods: pumpkin, carrots, lettuce, broccoli, leeks, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, garlic, etc. Legumes are a good source of carbohydrates and protein. They are low in fat, have no cholesterol and have a significant amount of fiber. Regular consumption appears to have a protective effect against cardiovascular diseases. Some of these legumes include: peas, chick peas; soy, beans, etc.

Soup is one of the best foods for a balanced diet and a healthy way to eat vegetables. Soup is more than the sum of its ingredients; It has high nutritional value. It is a tasty magic potion, comforting and aromatic.

6 www.internationalschoolalgarve.com World Sleep Day

World Sleep Day is an annual event sponsored by the World Medical Association’s Sleep (World Association of Sleep Medicine), to raise awareness about sleep disorders and highlight the impact they have on society. Sleep is one of the most important activities to maintain health. Sleeping is not only a need for mental and physical rest: during sleep various metabolic processes occur which, if changed, affects the balance of our whole organism. Studies show that people who sleep less than necessary have a lower ability to concentrate, in addition to aging quicker, prone to more infections, obesity, hypertension and diabetes. What is the ideal amount of sleep? The average adult needs 7-8 hours of sleep. Children of preschool age (3-5 years) should sleep between 10-13 hours, children of school age (6-15 years) should sleep approximately 9-11 hours. Not sleeping enough will make it harder to learn new things. The risks associated with lack of sleep include; fatigue and daytime sleepiness, irritability, sudden mood swings, loss of short term memory, loss of creativity, reduced ability to plan and execute, slow reasoning, inattentiveness and difficulty concentrating. For a more peaceful sleep, we must reduce the intensity of light and sound twenty minutes before bedtime, avoiding heavier meals. Other important factors are a good mattress and pillow as well as the temperature and brightness of the room.
