(966t)toz-t8I :(Z) 0t ersfnN t82 NuytsiaVol.10, No.2 (1995) related to certain bipinnateleaved speciesof seclior,Botrycephalqe (Benth.) Taub. (seeTindale & Roux 1969 & 1974, Andersonet al. 197| & 1984, Anderson1978, Vassal 1972,Chappill & Maslin 1995,Brain 1987,and Brain & Maslin in prep.).

While phyltode nerve number and inflorescenceform are useful charactersfor recognizing ,,uninerves-Racemosae"species these are not completelyreliable charactersfor ascribingtaxa to this (artificial) group. For example, A. difformis R. Baker has 2 longitudinal nerveson each face of its "Acaciq phyllodes yet its and carpological characterssuggest its inclusion in the microbotrya Group"; similarly, A. binen'ata DC. and A. wardellii Tind have Prominently 2- or 3-nervedphyllodes but are clearly relatedto A. bancrofrii (l-nerved phyllodes)which is placed in the " microbotrya Group" (seenotes below underA. brumalis sp.nov). There are also a number oftaxa, especiallyftom southwestwestern Austxalia, with 2 nervesalong the (often thickened)upper margin of the phyllodes, thus making a total of 5 nervesper phyllode (2 along the upper margins, I on each face and I along the lower margin); thesetaxa uncommonly have racemoseinflotescences (e.g. A. scleroclada sp. nov. below). Similarly there are some caseswhere species with simple "Acaciq inflorescencesare closely related to racemosetaxa, e g. A synchronicia Maslin in the victoriae cfor]p,, (Maslin 1992). The length of the varies considerablybut within section Phyllodineae thereseems to be a significanttaxonomic discontinuity between those taxa having very reducedracemes (the axesgenerally not aboveabout I mm long and supportingI or 2 heads)and those having more elongatedracemes with more numerousheads. A recent study by Brain and Maslin (in prep.) using serologicaldata suggeststhat specieswith very reducedracemes are most closely related io non-ru""-or" speciesand that there is little or no relationshipbetween this combined group and the ,,Uninerves-Racemosae",These relationshipsbased on biochemical data wele an unexpected result ofthe Brain and Maslin study, however, ifthey arecoroborated by other evidencethen a major rearrangementof the classificationof sectionPhyllodineae will be needed.

"uninerves-Racemosae"; This paperis not a revision ofthe the intentionhere is simply to describe "Flora new speciesand lectotypify namesahead of their inclusion in the forthcoming of ' volumes.

Methods

The taxa included in this paper are ananged alphabeticallyby speciesname. unless oth€rwise statedall measurementsare taken from dried herbadummaterial. Botanical Distdcts referred to under the Distribution of eachnew speciesare defined by Beard ( 1980). speciesdisfiibutions ale also expressedby 1: 250 000 map number (seeMaslin and Pedley 1982 for maps of the Ausfalian Acdcia flo'a published in this sameformat).

My approachto both typification and the application of rank are discussedelsewhere (Maslin & Cowan 1994a and Cowan & Maslin 1995 respectively) --1

Conservations/atus. Widespread, not known to be threatened.

Etymology. From the Creek, anthos -f1ower,and chairo - rejorce.Alluding to the bright goldenheads clusteredin sholt terminal .The nameis also a very appropriatecommemoration of the birth of my daughter, Kimberly Sarah, in March 1991, around the time that the original draft of rhis description was prepared,

"Acacia Affinities. Acacia anthochaera belongs to the prainii Group" (see discussion under A. dorsenna sp. nov. below) and until now was regardedas a long phyllode yariant of A, hemiteles Benth. While thesetwo specieshave very similar inflorescenceand carpological featuresthey are readily distinguished by their growth habit, bark characteristicsand phyllode proportions. The principal characterswhich set A. hemiteles apart fiom the new speciesare the following: 0.5-2(3) m tall; bark smooth, sometimesgrey and fissuredat the extremebase of the relatively thin stems;phyllodes narrowly elliptic to a narrowlyoblong or linear,4-10 cm long,4-9(11) mm wide, length to width ratio 5-15, coriaceousand somewhatrigid, straight to recurved, rarely shallowly incurved, mucro commonly coarsely pungent. The dist butions of the two speciesoverlap in the region betweenabout Beacon (c. 55 km northeastof Koorda) and Morawa, and the morphology of a few herbariumspecimens suggest that hybridizationmay occur(e.g. c. l5 km NW of Kalannietowards Dalwallinu, B.R. Maslin 3977, PERTH; 13 km E of Coorow towards Latham, B.R. Masltn 4128 & 4128A.PERTH).

Lrke A. pruinii Maidet, A. anthochaeragrows to a beautiful, shapely with a densecanopy and massesof iiagrant, bright golden heads. Occasionally the two are sympatric, for example, on Mouroubra Station, c. 70 km south of Paynes Find; B.R. Maslin 6666 (A. anthochaera) and B.R. Maslin 6667 (A. prainii). At this locality the general facies of the two specieswas similar, however,A. anthochaerq occwred as a tree 7 m tall (which seemsto representthe maximum height attainedby the spccies)whereas,4. 2ralnii reachedonly 4 rn;'A. prainii was further distinguishedby its shorter (to c. 5 cm long), pungentphyllodes.

In phyllodes and sometimesin habit A. anthochaerq may resembleA. aestiy.tlisE. Pritz. which has light-golden, appressed-puberulousraceme axes, united sepalsand has seedswith a long, red- brown (brittle) funicle and a thick aril. Biology. A last-growing pioneer specieswhich regenerateswell from seedfollowing fire and also along disturbed road verges. It has a lifb-span of l0-15 years(K. Newbey, pers.comm.).

Flowering and fruiting periods. Flowering specimens coll€cted throughout the year with a predominancein May and December. Pods with matureseeds collected in December.

Conservqtionstatrs. Not consideredrare or endangered. J u Etymology. The epithetis derived fiom the Greekword - chamaileon(alizard that is changeablewith 0 respectto its colours) and alludes to the phyllodes which are very variable in shapeand size. A, Typirtcaion. The type collection of A. stowardii at BM consistsof both flowering and fruiting d specimens. Although theseundoubtedly represent the sametaxon it seemsprobable that they were b gatheredfrom different .
