The Benefits of Resistance Training for Youth – Page 1 The Benefits of Resistance Training for Youth By Josh Hewett Introduction For years medical and exercise professionals as well as parents discouraged prepubescent youth from resistance training. The old school of thought was that strength training would damage the growth plates and retard or stunt children’s skeletal development. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Research has dispelled all of the past concerns and it is also worth noting that there has never been an incidence of growth plate breakage reported in the United States. According to Wayne Wescott, Ph.D. (Specialized Strength Training, 2001) progressive resistance training is actually the best way to enhance musculoskeletal development in boys and girls. Other studies have even indicated that resistance training has its greatest positive affect on bone formation during the prepubescent years (Bass, 2000). This potential benefit may be especially important for young women who are at increased risk of developing osteoporosis. If established training guidelines are followed and if nutritional recommendations are adhered to, participation in regular resistance training will have a favorable influence on growth at any stage of development. The American Academy of Pediatrics (2001), the American College of Sports Medicine (2000), the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine (1988), and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (Faigenbaum et al., 1996) all support participation in youth resistance training activities as long as the program is supervised and designed correctly. Joe Defranco, a respected strength and conditioning coach who works with young athletes, is quoted as saying the following regarding the growth myth: “It still amazes me that parents won’t hesitate to get their young children (6-7 years old) involved in sports such as football, gymnastics, basketball and soccer, yet they feel that participating in a strength-training program is damaging to their children’s bone health and will stunt their growth. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 3, 2016 Arnold Sports Festival, March 3-6, 2016 Arnold Sports Festival Grows Bigger, Better In 2016 185,000 expected to see 18,000 athletes from 80 nations compete in 55 sports and events COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Arnold Sports Festival, the largest multi-sport event in the nation, will grow to a record 55 sports and events when the annual celebration of health and fitness is held in Columbus for the 28th consecutive year. The 2016 Arnold Sports Festival will be March 3-6, 2016 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Ohio Expo Center and several other venues in Central Ohio. New events this year include IFBB Arnold Pro Wheelchair bodybuilding, Indoor Triathlon and Baton Twirling. All professional and amateur bodybuilding contests will be at the convention center while several competitions and the Arnold SportsWorld Kids & Teens EXPO will be at the Ohio Expo Center. The 28th Annual Arnold Classic, Arnold Classic 212, Arnold Classic Physique, Fitness International, Figure International, Bikini International, Physique International and Arnold Wheelchair professional bodybuilding contests will be at the Battelle Grand. Prejudging for some events will be presented on the Arnold Fitness EXPO stage. The Arnold Amateur IFBB/NPC Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Physique Championships will also be at Battelle Grand and the Arnold Fitness EXPO stage. Women’s events will be on Thursday, March 3 and men’s events on Friday, March 4, with finals in bodybuilding, fitness, figure and bikini scheduled for Saturday, March 5 on the Arnold Fitness EXPO stage. Sports and events to be held at the Ohio Expo Center include Archery, Cheerleading & Dance, CrossFit Endeavor, Equestrian, Table Tennis and XPC Powerlifting / POWER X. -

STRONGMAN HISTORY There is no better way to begin a complete guide to strongman than with the history and origin of the sport itself. On some level strongman has existed as long as man has existed. Humans have always had to lift rocks and logs, or carry loads of wheat or wood on their back etc. Further down the line in history we had to move ships by rowing with oars on a boat, or pull heavy loads with ropes. Human strength in its rawest most functional form has always been important for our survival. Ancient stories of strongman like Samson in the bible and the Greek myth of Hercules has captivated us for centuries.
