Arnold Sports Festival Grows Bigger, Better in 2016 185,000 Expected to See 18,000 Athletes from 80 Nations Compete in 55 Sports and Events FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 3, 2016 Arnold Sports Festival, March 3-6, 2016 Arnold Sports Festival Grows Bigger, Better In 2016 185,000 expected to see 18,000 athletes from 80 nations compete in 55 sports and events COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Arnold Sports Festival, the largest multi-sport event in the nation, will grow to a record 55 sports and events when the annual celebration of health and fitness is held in Columbus for the 28th consecutive year. The 2016 Arnold Sports Festival will be March 3-6, 2016 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Ohio Expo Center and several other venues in Central Ohio. New events this year include IFBB Arnold Pro Wheelchair bodybuilding, Indoor Triathlon and Baton Twirling. All professional and amateur bodybuilding contests will be at the convention center while several competitions and the Arnold SportsWorld Kids & Teens EXPO will be at the Ohio Expo Center. The 28th Annual Arnold Classic, Arnold Classic 212, Arnold Classic Physique, Fitness International, Figure International, Bikini International, Physique International and Arnold Wheelchair professional bodybuilding contests will be at the Battelle Grand. Prejudging for some events will be presented on the Arnold Fitness EXPO stage. The Arnold Amateur IFBB/NPC Bodybuilding, Fitness, Figure, Bikini & Physique Championships will also be at Battelle Grand and the Arnold Fitness EXPO stage. Women’s events will be on Thursday, March 3 and men’s events on Friday, March 4, with finals in bodybuilding, fitness, figure and bikini scheduled for Saturday, March 5 on the Arnold Fitness EXPO stage. Sports and events to be held at the Ohio Expo Center include Archery, Cheerleading & Dance, CrossFit Endeavor, Equestrian, Table Tennis and XPC Powerlifting / POWER X. The new Arnold SportsWorld Kids & Teens EXPO will fill the Ohio Expo Center’s Bricker Building with clinics and demonstrations in baseball, chess, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey and soccer, among others. Nonstop stage entertainment will include The Arnold Quest For Talent! talent show and the first Miss Arnold Teen Fitness Pageant. The Arnold SportsWorld is open from 10 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, March 6. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Lorimer have co-produced the Arnold Sports Festival since 1989, when it debuted as a one-day bodybuilding competition known as the Arnold Classic. The Arnold Sports Festival is now a four-day festival featuring 55 sports and events. The 2016 Arnold Fitness EXPO, the heart of the Arnold Sports Festival, will be held March 4-6 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, and feature more than 900 booths of the latest in sports equipment, apparel and nutrition and a stage that hosts unique, non-stop competitions and entertainment. -more- Page 2 The daily EXPO ticket includes admission to the Arnold Fitness EXPO, most events at the convention center, Arnold SportsWorld and all events at the Ohio Expo Center for $15 in advance, $20 at the door. This new feature, "Mighty Mitts," was supported by MHP (our main sponsor) and also by Epicentr, a large building supply corporation located in the Ukraine. MM was a stand-alone contest and did not involve any of our Strongman competitors. Instead, it showcased ten men who are well-known or even famous for the strength of their hands. Such a situation opens a window of opportunity for the World Strongmen Federation to become a leader of world's strongmen movement.     Thoughts of a Stonelover by Dr Terry Todd In the late summer of 1978 Jan and I travelled to the Highlands of Scotland with Bill Kazmaier to meet David P. Webster O.B.E. It was Jan’s first meeting with DPW, but I’d met him much earlier--in the fall of 1964 in York, Pennsylvania--when he was the organizer of a group of a dozen or so Highland Heavies, including Bill Anderson, who were touring the US with several other groups of athletes from unique sports. We met at the York Barbell Company, where I had just begun working as a managing editor for Strength and Health, and I had the good luck to see the Heavies perform the next night in Baltimore. It was an unforgettable evening, and I hoped even then that one day I’d be able to see and even take part in a Highland Games in Scotland. That chance came in 1978 when Jan and I and Bill flew into Glasgow and met David, who had offered to take us to the Highlands so Bill could attempt to lift the Inver Stone and Jan could try to put the wind beneath the Dinnies. Bill did no special training as we had no smooth “river stones” in our area, but Jan spent several months doing such arcane movements as partial deadlifts, Jefferson lifts and partial squats—all heavy. The story of their attempts to lift these famous stones, and of Bill’s Weight Over Bar toss at the legendary Highland Games at Braemar, is too complicated to tell here, but the trip with David caused us all to fall in love with the Highlands and the Highlanders for the reverence with which they viewed the lifting and throwing of heavy stones.

The story of the Arnold Sports Festival dates to 1970, when Columbus sports promoter Jim Lorimer invited a young Austrian bodybuilder named Arnold Schwarzenegger to Columbus to compete in the Mr. World contest that was accompanying that year’s World Weightlifting Championships. Schwarzenegger won the contest, earned $1,000 and vowed to return to Columbus one day to partner with Lorimer and promote the sport of bodybuilding. After winning the Mr. Olympia contest every year between 1970-1975, Schwarzenegger was true to his word. Schwarzenegger and Lorimer promoted the Mr. Olympia contest in Columbus six times between 1976 and 1986 before founding the Arnold Classic in 1989. When Schwarzenegger was appointed the chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, he charged Lorimer to expand the scope of the Arnold Classic weekend to include other sports. Martial Arts and gymnastics were among the first added. More events have been added annually and the weekend was renamed the Arnold Sports Festival in 2006.

The Arnold Amateur features more than 700 competitors from more than 80 nations and is one of the most prestigious amateur bodybuilding contests in the world. The Arnold Amateur is held in Columbus, Ohio, USA, in conjunction with the Arnold Sports Festival, the largest multi-sport event in the USA with more than 18,000 athletes competing in 50 sports and events. The Arnold Classic, Arnold Classic 212, Fitness International, Figure International and Bikini International are among the IFBB Pro League contests held in conjunction with the Arnold Sports Festival. COMPETITOR ELIGIBILITY This competition is open for ALL the IFBB-affiliated National Federations from all over the world. THERE ARE NO QUALIFICATIONS for the following divisions for NPC members: Masters Bodybuilding, Classic Bodybuilding, Men’s Physique, Fitness, Bodyfitness (Figure), Masters Bodyfitness (Figure), Bikini-Fitness, Masters Bikini-Fitness and Women’s Physique.
