Notes on the culture of Broadmoor and other special hospitals, comparison with traditional psychiatric hospitals and the likely problems of whistle-blowing and diagnostic overshadowing within these cultures Diane Carpenter, University of Southampton Introduction These notes have been selected from a wider bibliography as they appear to encapsulate the relevant cultures under examination. The sources are briefly addressed in the text or footnotes. Following the examination of hospital cultures I have included a timeline to help with contextualization. Any outstanding questions I shall endeavour to address in person. The accompanying PowerPoint presentation summarises the issues that these extracts support. Culture in special hospitals / Broadmoor The following list provides examples of the culture within Broadmoor for the period c. 1970s- 1981.1 Its source was based on the evidence of former staff and patients and was televised before publication in book form. Whilst no source is completely without its bias, it is arguably important to take account of the recollections of those who may not traditionally have had a voice. These accounts may then be compared with the findings of official inquiries – where accusations have equally been levelled of bias towards the staff and the system. Accusations by patients of staff pilfering visitor’s gift. Key culture: keys represent power Admission procedure (described by Goffman as a ritual) involved stripping, bathing and isolating new patients). [Different in traditional psychiatric hospitals – there patients would receive a thorough physical examination to eliminate differential diagnoses, but otherwise joined other patients]. Diagnoses withheld from patients who are desperate to know what is wrong with them. -

Recent scholarship on modern religious history has sought to relocate Britain‟s „secularization moment‟ from the industrialization of the nineteenth century to the social and cultural upheavals of the 1960s. My thesis seeks to add to this debate by examining the way in which the established Church and Christian doctrine continued to play a central role in the politics of the 1980s. More specifically it analyses the conflict between the Conservative party and the once labelled „Tory party at Prayer‟, the Church of England. Both Church and state during this period were at loggerheads, projecting contrasting visions of the Christian underpinnings of the nation‟s political values. Finding Aid Women’s histories Image reference: MAF 59/146/f Resources for Teachers Introduction This resource contains a hyperlinked list of National Archives current resources for Women’s histories on The National Archives website. It includes education resources, online exhibitions, research guides, blog posts and podcasts by staff and external writers and links to external websites. The intention for this resource is to make it easier for teachers to find resources for teaching a diverse curriculum. We are committed to further improving our resources and continuing to increase the women’s histories told through our education resources and collections. This document will be updated periodically to add new resources that have been made available through our website. At The National Archives the voices of men, in the most part, frame our collections, reflecting the historic interests of government/past societies. Archives tend to reflect the values and biases of their makers; these values have changed a lot over the 1000 years of our collections. The further back we go into our records, the less present women’s voices are, as in the Medieval and Early Modern periods. Traditionally, history has focused on more male dominated fields of research, such as political history and military history, rather than the social and cultural spheres where historically women are often more likely to be found. Yet the threads of women’s experiences weave throughout our records; from monarchs to paupers; suffrage campaigners to black power campaigners. Women in positions of power tend to be the most visible in the records, the voice of the ‘everywoman’ proves much harder to find. -

CHAPTER 4 – SAVILE – HIS CAREER – PERCEPTIONS OF HIM IN THE BBC Introduction 4.1 In this chapter I shall sketch Savile’s life story and describe what people thought about him before anyone was prepared to talk openly about his sexual misconduct. Early Life 4.2 Savile was born into a Roman Catholic family in Leeds on 31 October 1926. He was the youngest of seven children. His father was, at one stage, an insurance agent and, at another, a bookmaker’s clerk. His mother, at times, was a care worker. In later life Savile used to call his mother ‘The Duchess’. He seems to have been very close to her and appeared to take great pleasure in being able to provide for her the material things she had not enjoyed earlier in life. In his autobiography, As It Happens, published in 1974, he referred to her as “my only real true love to date”64. 4.3 Savile left school at the age of 14, with, so far as I know, no formal qualifications. He had various jobs, first as an office boy, then working in a dried fruits business and later moving into a scrap business. At 18, he was conscripted as a Bevin Boy to work in the coalmines. That was a hard life but Savile was plainly proud of his time as a miner; he often talked about it. He had a mining accident and injured his back, an experience which I think reinforced his determination that mining was not going to be his life’s work. -

Sex and the Law Transcript Date: Wednesday, 2 March 2016 - 6:00PM Location: Barnard's Inn Hall 02 March 2016 Sex and the Law Professor Geoffrey Nice QC Reputations tumble; men once popular and famous but too powerful are condemned and imprisoned. Others fear their reputations will not long survive their deaths. Others will 'get away with it' as presumably they always have. How will all this be viewed in decades to come? Witch-hunt or confirmation that Mary Whitehouse was right all the time and the sexual revolution is to blame? If so, what should society have done that it didn't? What should it do now apart from lock up aged offenders? And what about juries? Will they, not judges, ultimately determine how law can be fair on sexual behaviour – assuming juries can ever discuss these things candidly. Introduction 1.This lecture is rooted in questions I found interesting at various stages of my professional practice where I dealt with several different kinds of sex- related crimes. Developments over recent years – in particular the investigation, prosecution and public condemnation of historic sex offenders - have possibly made the questions more likely to generate interest even if some of the questions that now arise – for me – may cause hostility in some quarters. 2.Indeed some of the things I may ask could easily lead to attacks as sustained and unfunny as the attacks that followed my Israel-Gaza lecture where I dared to identify views found intolerable by some. We have to recognise how it is not just in the USA - which may be thought presently to 'Trump' us on the closing of minds to freedom of thought - that there is intolerance of selected ideas. -

The Ofcom Broadcasting Code, took effect on 25 July 20051. The Code applies to all broadcasters regulated by Ofcom, with certain exceptions in the case of the BBC (Sections Five, Six, Nine and Ten) and S4C (part of Section Six). The Act requires that those under eighteen should be protected and Section One of the Broadcasting Code concerns the protection of the under-eighteens. It contains a number of rules regarding scheduling and content information (Rules 1.1 to 1.7) and specific rules regarding drugs, smoking, solvents and alcohol, violence and dangerous behaviour, offensive language and sex ( Rules 1.10 to 1.17).
