STRATEGIC PLAN 2010-2013

From the Chancellor

Indiana University East has evolved since many of you last stepped foot on campus – as students.

Today, IU East offers a broad range of bachelor’s degrees and selected master’s degrees and certificates through the main campus in Richmond, off-campus sites, and online program options. Enrollment has reached record levels with nearly 3,000 students looking to enrich their lives by earning an IU degree.

The students also participate in our growing slate of student life activities and compete on our sports teams through the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. They receive unprecedented academic and financial support through new retention programs and scholarships, too.

This is truly significant considering the impact of more bachelor’s and master’s degree students living in our region and the value that they will add to companies and communities throughout eastern and western Ohio.

And it’s you, our alumni, 5,000 strong, who play such a vital role in our success as we fulfill our mission as the region’s leader in baccalaureate and graduate education. With more than 90 percent of you still living in the region, your support – gifts of talent, money, time, advocacy and recruitment – is invaluable as we move forward.

We know the world is changing, and we must compete to recruit the best students and faculty, federal funding, and resources. Our future success depends on people who are well-educated and have the tools to help bring about the next model of prosperity in our knowledge-based economy.

The East Alumni Association’s 2010-2013 strategic plan has been designed to build upon the strong relationship between alumni and the campus by recognizing the role you play in our success.

The many individuals and groups that have contributed to the plan have identified three priorities: advocacy, advancement, and admissions.

Such an effort requires mobilizing our diverse alumni base to share stories at admission events, promote and maximize scholarship funds, and advise campus leaders on how to enhance the college experience for current and future students.

I also urge you to stay connected with your alma mater on our Web site at www.iue.edu, connect with our various social media outlets, and show your pride by wearing Red Wolves’ gear.

I’m proud of our alumni’s commitment to IU East, and I commend the IUEAA for its dedication, time, and energy in creating the new strategic plan.

Nasser H. Paydar, Ph.D. Chancellor

1 From the Director

Typewriters to computers. Dictionaries to Internet, Carpenter Hall to Springwood Hall. Pioneers to Red Wolves. Without a doubt, over the past 40 years IU East has undergone change.

While our past will forever be the foundation on which we base our service, we are also poised to orchestrate a mission to be in concert with the new missions of the university and the IU Alumni Association. The IU East Alumni Association has developed a new three-year Strategic Plan that will propel our constituent society forward while maintaining the traditions on which we were founded: serving our alumni, our campus, and our community.

As alumni our basic mission is “connecting alumni and serving IU.” We have always strived to do this and will continue in the future. However, we must re-examine the methods and practices in which we do this. Our mission is being refocused to better serve the needs of all of our alumni, to advocate for our alma mater by telling its story, our own stories of success, and to give of our time and resources to assist the current students of our alma mater to be just as successful.

I often tell people that if IU East hadn’t been here, I wouldn’t have been able to attend college. That’s true for so many of us. But today, it’s the college of choice. The campus is experiencing record enrollment and incredible growth in academic programs and campus activities. I believe it’s partly because of you. Sometimes quietly and sometimes loudly, you exude your IU East experience in your daily life and profession, and people are taking notice.

Be proud of your alma mater. Whether you sat in Carpenter Hall or Springwood; whether you were a Pioneer (and you were in the true sense of the word!) or a Red Wolf, be proud of the evolution our alma mater has experienced over the past 40 years. And we promise to remain dedicated to assuring that pride continues.

Terry Wiesehan ’96 Director, Alumni Relations
