_____________________________________________________________________________________ DEAR READER, OF REMAKES AND ADAPTATIONS Remakes and adaptations rarely surpass the artistic quality of an original and valuable artwork. In order to achieve that an exceptional talent with a broad vision is required. Reginald Rose’s drama entitled Twelve Angry Men was originally broadcast as a television play in 1954. It is basically a chamber play and it tells the story of a jury consisting of 12 people who deliberate in order to arrive to a unanimous verdict in a murder trial based on the concept of reasonable doubt. Soon it was adapted for the stage and in 1957 the highly successful drama film 12 Angry Men was produced, directed by Sidney Lumet and which starred Henry Fonda. This film made a lasting impact on many generations, due to the psychological process it depicts in social interactions despite its certain unrealistic legal features. It achieved a cult status and in 2007 it was selected for preservation in the Unites States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Since then it was adapted many times for the stage and several new film remakes and adaptations were produced. Of these I would like to draw the attention to the two most significant film remakes and one adaptation. These three movies exemplify the rule at the beginning of my editorial. The first of these remakes is the Hindi film Ek Ruka Hua Faisla produced in 1986 and directed by Basu Chatterjee; the other the American television film 12 Angry Men produced in 1997 and directed

The article investigated the translated into Kazakh three of Chinghiz Aitmatov’s works; the woman’s image in these three works have been compared with their original, accuracy of the translation, and methods and techniques used by the author to convey the idea. The author ascertained that in translation psychology of each character and mood have been interpreted according to Kazakh concept and the original text rhythm and storyline have been preserved. Moreover, lexical transformations used by the translator have been analyzed. Keywords: Turkic literature, literary translation, generalization, concretization, writer, translator, parallelism, composition. The creative work of Chingiz Aitmatov, a prominent Kyrgyz writer has a unique place in the world literature and has been recognized worldwide in the twentieth century. His works were translated into 191 languages and spread over 40 million copies. The works of Ch. Aitmatov have been re-published and translated by request of Kazakh readers.

    MEMORY 27 Pamiat' vs. Memorial: Rasputin, Aitmatov and the Search for Soviet Memory ROSSEN DJAGALOV YALE UNIVERSITY he title of this paper may be misleading: neither was Valentin Rasputin a member of the ultra-nationalist Pere- stroika-era Pamiat' organization, nor did Chinghiz Aitma- tov ever belong to the human-rights-oriented Memorial TSociety.1 During the Perestroika years, however, the life trajectories of these two writers brought them close to the respective orbit of each of these movements. In his infamous 1988 article ―Sacrificing Oneself for Truth’s Sake‖ in the nationalist journal Nash sovremennik and in other statements, Rasputin publicly defended Pamiat'. To be sure, he was less conspiratorial in his thought, less rabid in his anti- semitism, and less violent in his appeals than the leaders of that or- ganization. Yet all of these trademark Pamiat' characteristics have been sadly explicit in his writing ever since the early 1980s. Similarly, Aitmatov’s background (his father, a prominent Kyrgyz communist, was executed in 1938) made him keenly attuned, as a writer and a pub- lic persona, to Memorial’s chief object of investigation: the crimes of Stalinism. In his role as a post-Soviet politician, he has also spoken about human rights in the countries of the former Soviet Union, and yet, being an astute navigator of the Soviet system, he appears lacking in Memorial’s moral maximalism. Thus, Pamiat' and Memorial could serve as the idealized poles towards which both Aitmatov and Rasputin tended in their mature lives and works. And it will be the purpose of this paper to understand the memory templates that brought Rasputin and Aitmatov to such divergent modes of remem- bering, and ultimately, to such opposite poles of Perestroika-era poli- tics.
