The guide is divided into three main parts: (1) overviews,(2) lesson plans, and (3) student handouts. A Holocaust time line, a glossary of key terms, and an annotated bibliography are included. The seven overviews in the guide provide a summary of topics related to the Holocaust. These short lectures can be summarized by teachers or handed ut for reading. The overviews are intended to supplement the information in the students' textbooks on each topic and provide a background for teaching the lessons that follow each overview. The 11 lesson plans are designed to highlight a topic discussed in an overview. Each lesson plan contains a list of materials needed to teach the lesson, a list of key terms or vocabulary introduced in the lesson, and a three step plan for teaching each lesson. A motivational activity introduces each lesson and is followed by suggestions for developing the lesson and ideas for extension or enrichment activities. Most of the 34 handouts are primary source documents. They consist of interviews with South Carolina survivors, original newspaper accounts of events in Germany, Nazi speeches, and testimony at the Nuremburg Trials. Maps of Eastern Europe are included for a map activity. Overviews highlight the history of anti-semitism, Hitler's rise to power, prewar Nazi Germany, the Holocaust, resisters, bystanders and rescuers, and remembering and forgetting. Two concentration camp liberators, Claude Hipp and Henry Allen, were responsible for the identification of Holocaust survivors and liberators living in South Carolina. Professors Selden Smith, Walter Edgar of the University of South Carolina, Martin Perlmutter of the College of Charleston, and Robert Herzslein of the University of South Carolina reviewed these materials.In addition five South Carolina teachers read and reviewed the curriculum. Jim Littlejohn of Irmo High School in Irmo, Ruth Bures of the Academic Magnet School at Burke High School in Charleston, Dottie Stone of Du Bose Middle Schoolin Summerville, and Donna Boggs of Gilbert Elementary School in Gilbert. A special thanks goes also to Nathan Katzin for his critique of the manuscript. Three scholars provided training for the interviewers who participated in the videotaping project.     THE BIAŁYSTOK AND KIELCE GHETTOS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY Sara Bender During the past two decades, scholars have written research reports and monographs about several Jewish communities in Poland that were destroyed in the Holocaust. Archivists in the United States and Israel conducted a massive campaign to gather testimony from Holocaust survivors and some of the major World War II and Holocaust testimonials have been computerized. An invaluable aid to those engaged in studying the history of the Polish Jews during the period of the German occupation, these tools have enabled scholars to conduct comparative studies of the ghettos—for example, of two ghettos in Poland (Białystok and Kielce) to which Holocaust historians had previously accorded scant attention. FROM SOVIET TO GERMAN OCCUPATION In accordance with the terms of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Treaty between the Third Reich and the Soviet Union, the Soviet Army entered eastern Poland on September 17, 1939, and, within a month, annexed this territory. One of the major cities annexed was Białystok (known for its textile industry), with a Jewish population of some 50,000. The remainder of Poland was divided into two parts: western and northern Poland, annexed by the Reich; and central Poland, which as of October 1939 became a single political administrative unit known as the Generalgouvernement; this unit was subdivided into four districts: Warsaw, Lublin, Kraków, and Radom. The city of Kielce, whose Jewish population in September 1939 numbered approximately 20,000, was located in the Radom district. The Soviets controlled Białystok for a little less than two years. On June 27, 1941, the Germans invaded Białystok and within a month imprisoned Jews in a ghetto.

    July 2008 Patterns of Cooperation, Collaboration and Betrayal: Jews, Germans and Poles in Occupied Poland during World War II1 Mark Paul Collaboration with the Germans in occupied Poland is a topic that has not been adequately explored by historians.2 Holocaust literature has dwelled almost exclusively on the conduct of Poles toward Jews and has often arrived at sweeping and unjustified conclusions. At the same time, with a few notable exceptions such as Isaiah Trunk3 and Raul Hilberg,4 whose findings confirmed what Hannah Arendt had written about 1 This is a much expanded work in progress which builds on a brief overview that appeared in the collective work The Story of Two Shtetls, Brańsk and Ejszyszki: An Overview of Polish-Jewish Relations in Northeastern Poland during World War II (Toronto and Chicago: The Polish Educational Foundation in North America, 1998), Part Two, 231–40. The examples cited are far from exhaustive and represent only a selection of documentary sources in the author’s possession. 2 Tadeusz Piotrowski has done some pioneering work in this area in his Poland’s Holocaust: Ethnic Strife, Collaboration with Occupying Forces, and Genocide in the Second Republic, 1918–1947 (Jefferson, North Carolina: McFarland, 1998). Chapters 3 and 4 of this important study deal with Jewish and Polish collaboration respectively. Piotrowski’s methodology, which looks at the behaviour of the various nationalities inhabiting interwar Poland, rather than focusing on just one of them of the isolation, provides context that is sorely lacking in other works. Until today this topic has not been fully examined and described. Many of families’ stories have not been documented although these families might be eligible to be presented with the “Righteous Among the Nations” medal. Józefa Kobyłko’s story is one of such examples. Before and during the war she lived in Skrajna street. After her husband’s death she raised two as a single parent: Alfreda and Gienek. The family lived in poverty. In 1942 the Germans deported several thousand Jews from the Kielce ghetto to the Treblinka extermination camp. Some 1,500 to 2,000 Jews stayed in Kielce, that was about 10% of the original number. The Jews were sent to forced labour camps which operated at factories. Adam Romankiewicz age 16 escaped from one of such camps… It was 1943. 12-year-old Alfred, when leaving her house saw the 3 young boys who were escaping being caught by the Germans. Two of them were shot. The third one disappeared, the Germans were looking for him high and low.
