On-Water Race Course Viewing On-water viewing of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Chicago is free to the public (though fans who have purchased Boaters Pass tickets in advance will have access to the Chicago Harbors Boaters Pass Viewing Zone to the north of the course). To maintain the safety of the event, please be advised of the following if you’re planning on watching from your boat: CLIFF NOTES: ›› A USCG Safety Zone has been established for the America’s Cup racing, there are penalties for entering the zone. ›› This zone runs from on the North to the Monroe Harbor Entrance on the South, all inside the outer Chicago Harbor break wall. ›› It will not be possible to transit from the South Side of the Zone (i.e., Chicago Lock & Monroe Harbor) to the north side of the Zone (i.e., Playpen) without going outside of the Chicago Harbor break wall when the zone is in effect. ›› A 1/10th of a mile wide Transit Lane has been set up around the Chicago Harbor Lock & Monroe Harbor break wall, PLEASE DO NOT STOP TO WATCH RACING IN THIS LANE. ›› The Safety Zone will be visually marked by Official Stake Boats which are identified by an ORANGE FLAG flying on their forestay or on the bow of their boat. ›› Official marshal boats flying GREEN MARSHAL FLAGS will patrol between the stake boats to ensure that boaters understand where the boundary is. Please follow their hails. ›› Depending on the racecourse layout, a smaller safety zone may be enacted which will allow boaters to get up closer to the action. Again the Stake Boats with their orange flags will mark the boundary of the race course zone. ›› AGAIN, PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO WATCH THE RACING FROM WITHIN THE TRANSIT ZONE.

LVACWSCHICAGO.COM 14 U.S. Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan Top Five Boating Safety Tips Boat Sober.

5 Safety Tip 1 Boating under the influence (BUI) is just as dangerous as drinking and driving a motor vehicle, and is just as illegal. Every boater needs to understand the risks of boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs (BUI). It is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs in every state. The Coast Guard also enforces a federal law that prohibits BUI. This law pertains to ALL boats, from kayaks to the largest ships. The penalties for BUI can include large fines, revocation of operator privileges and serious jail terms. File a float plan. Make sure someone knows where you are going and when you will be back! Without a float plan you are counting on someone else - a friend, neighbor, or family member to remember detailed information that rescue personnel need in order to find you. Filing a plan can make a difference in the outcome. Float Plans can be found at: floatplan-

Safety Tip 2 Tip Safety central.cgaux.org or through the U.S. Coast Guard’s free smart phone App, available on Android and Itunes stores. Safety Tip 3 Wear It! Donning a life jacket is much harder once you’re in the water, especially if you’re injured. The law states you must have a life jacket for every person on board, but the Coast Guard recommends you wear your life jacket at all times when boating. Federal law requires all children under the age of 12 wear a life jacket, but the Coast Guard also recommends that all children, regardless of age and size also wear a life jacket any time they are on a boat or near the water.

Communications. Mariners are encouraged to invest in a VHF-FM radio as the primary means of distress alerting on the water. Cell phones are unreliable. Many modern VHF-FM radios are equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This emergency feature will send a distress alert with the vessel’s information and Global Positioning Sys- tem (GPS) location at the press of a button, IF the DSC radio has been properly registered with an MMSI number and the radio is properly interfaced with the GPS

Safety Tip 4 Tip Safety in order to send an accurate position. U.S. recreational boaters can obtain an MMSI through: BOAT US 1-800-563-1536, SEA TOW 1-800-4SEATOW or the U.S. Pow- er Squadron. Most of these organizations provide MMSIs at no charge. Safety Tip 5 Vessel Safety Checks. Vessel Safety Checks are offered by experienced members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the U.S. Power Squadrons, two of the nation’s premier volunteer boating safety organizations. A Vessel Safety Check is your best way of learning about problems that might put you in violation of state or federal laws or, worse, create danger for you or your passengers on the water. Go to www.safetyseal.net and click on “I Want a VSC” to find a Vessel Examiner near you. Take a Boating Safety Course! A Boating Safety Course provides great information for every member of the fami- ly or anyone who will ever be on or near boats. These courses cover many aspects of boating safety, from boat handling to reading the weather, “Water ‘N Kids” classes for children, to courses for experienced boaters who want to learn electronic navi- gation skills. The most popular basic courses generally have from 6 to 13 lessons to provide a foundation of operational and safety instruction.
