Sep 15, Karen rated it Charm and Strange was ok Charm and Strange librarything-winpoetry. I like to read poetry from time and it can either be a hit or a miss for me. This book of poems falls into the latter category. I tried Charm and Strange understand these poems but for most of them I felt that the words seemed chaotic Charm and Strange random and separate from each other. The lack of punctuation or capital letters made it more frustrating for me to Charm and Strange. I guess I just couldn't figure out how to read them; each one read like one long run-on sentence. Out of all the poems in this collection, two resonated with me: Slipping Away, because of Charm and Strange station wagon imagery. My parents had one too and I used to sit backwards in the way back. And, Loki, because I have been stung by a bee, and a yellow jacket too, so I know what it feels like. I Charm and Strange a free review copy of this book. The title initially grabbed me, and continued whimsical through the table of contents! The book starts off with a frantic pace, then softens into reminiscence. Poems return often to the same beats, and revisit themes in different guises, both within and across separate entries. Also reoccurring are mentions of death, I received a free review copy of this book. Also reoccurring are mentions of death, love, flowers - especially roses and peonies- and, unexpectedly, hyenas. Some emotionally charged moments Charm and Strange the author's life are mentioned more than once, seemingly as a way of working through what happened. The middle section has a vacation-by-the-water feeling to it that's perfect for summer, if still a bit melancholy. There's Charm and Strange lot of dreams and dream imagery throughout. In addition, it manages to touch on the topical without being overly timely, mired in the current moment. Aug 21, Angelina Barrett rated it it was ok. This is a book Charm and Strange an ill-thought title. It is a poetry book of run on sentences, not that they aren't intelligent sentences but rather unpoetic compared to many others. Perhaps this contemporary work was published too soon. Though, there are still a few good ones that the mind is capable of contemplating even if they aren't as mind opening as others. This author has potential, and I compliment her on being able to put her poems together, the poetry just has room to grow and become more moving This is a book with an ill-thought title. I recommend this book to anyone that likes to read poems Charm and Strange aren't as hard to understand while still clinging to extravagance. Hello darlings! No one Charm and Strange knows who Andrew Winston Winters is. Least of all himself. He is part Win, a lonely teenager exiled to a remote boarding school in the wake of a family tragedy. The guy Charm and Strange shuts the whole world out, no matter the cost, because his darkest fear is of himself …of the wolfish predator within. The boy who, one fateful summer, was part of something so terrible it came close to destroying him. A deftly woven, elegant, unnerving psychological thriller about a boy at war with himself. Charm and Strange is a masterful exploration of one of the greatest taboos. I had to prance around lightly in my own review, so as not to spoil it:. Well-written and devastating. NOT paranormal, in the usual sense of the word. The book is a harrowing read, but hopeful and life-affirming in the end. The reader learns the truth along with Win, and it would be a shame to pre-empt that. What is Charm and Strange go-to, spoiler-free description when someone wants a quick summary? How have readers reacted to this book? Thank you! I can understand all of those viewpoints, I suppose. It is an upsetting story and a very sad one. Knowing that people have found the book meaningful is a special thing. What are the roots of this novel, and how did it grow? I know that when I was writing it I was exploring some of my own ideas about how—from science to myth—we develop a sense Charm and Strange ourselves, and under what circumstances change can Charm and Strange. The anger of others can be hard to contain. But as adults, I believe it is up to us to hold the anger of children and not ask them to keep it inside. Was it hard to find the right words for Win? What were the challenges in fostering reader empathy, as opposed to pity Charm and Strange revulsion? This is because he fears hurting and he fears being Charm and Strange. In this way his suffering has dehumanized him. These are two of the strongest forces I know. In that way, I hoped readers would connect with how his struggles come from a place of strength and resilience, not weakness. Win speaks through his own lens, but Charm and Strange tells his truth openly. Win has created an entire mental schema with which to understand what has happened to him, but to me, approaching from outside, it looks like a metaphor. One of the reasons I write Charm and Strange is because it enables me to couch real struggles in metaphorical terms, to examine problems one step removed from their painful immediacy. What is your take on the role of metaphor in fiction and in life? How can art help heal our traumas? And it is fascinating to consider how we, as a culture, use metaphor to distance and deconstruct complex realities, not just in literature, but in all forms of storytelling. Culturally, we use fantasy and metaphor in other ways, too: For many people, Santa Claus is a symbol of faith and childhood innocence. In the book, letting Charm and Strange of that particular innocence is a milestone of growing Charm and Strange that Drew marks. It marks the integration of his past and his present, as well as his stepping out onto his path toward healing—the magic he gives up is his belief in his own badness. Was it ever overwhelming? What kind of coping strategies did you have to develop? Charm and Strange yes, on an emotional level, it was Charm and Strange to work on this Charm and Strange. I was also going to say that the process of writing the book made me sad, but I actually think I was in a dark place when I started it. Sometimes writing is a way of coping. I love all animals. Sadly, we lost our old doggy this past fall, but we have a young dog and two sweet cats. Maybe a peanut butter and Charm and Strange cheese sandwich? Those are really good, I swear! Thank you, my dear. I loved the book. It made me think, which is what I look for most in literature. You are commenting using your WordPress. You are commenting using your Google account.
