Use of the Welsh Language

All of our teaching is in English, but we try to use Welsh as much as possible to encour- age bilingualism and to increase the employability of our pupils. The Cwricwlwm Cymreig forms part of the work of all curriculum areas.

Welsh Phrase of the Fortnight

A ‘Welsh Phrase of the Fortnight’ is printed in our weekly Staff Bulletin for staff to use with pupils at every opportunity. This is closely linked with our ‘Thought for the Week’ programme used during Assemblies and Registration Periods.

Healthy School Initiative

We encourage a whole school community approach to food and fitness. The Head- teacher, Staff and Governing Body ensure that food provided in school, and advice given to pupils, promotes a healthy and active lifestyle.

We are committed to providing high quality PE lessons and health related exercise, and we work in partnership with Healthy Schools, Hearty Lives Programme, PESS, 5x60 and other Community Sports organisations.

The school takes every opportunity to encourage fitness and wellbeing by incorporating a number of the above programmes in our Health and Wellbeing Day (Sports Day) each year.

Healthy School Objectives:

 To promote pupil participation and decision making in all aspects of food and fitness activities.

 To ensure that activities related to food and fitness, provided for pupils through- out the day, are consistent with curriculum guidance and Welsh Government regulations.

 To work in partnership with School Meal Providers, to ensure that consistent messages about nutritional standards and healthy lifestyles are given to our pupils.

 To offer a broad range of safe, stimulating indoor and outdoor sports, play and recreational activities.

Christmas Lunch Staff were treated to a fantastic meal prepared by the Hospitality and Catering pupils, which was accompanied by the School Choir who sang several songs creating a real Christmas atmosphere. Not only was this a wonderful experience for staff and pupils, it counts towards the BTEC qualifications the pupils are undertaking.

Pudsey Bear Biscuit Sales Hospitality and Catering Pupils raised £70 for Children In Need during November by baking and selling Pudsey Bear biscuits in school at break time. A great effort from all.

Extreme Makeover for ASD Base Garden A team of volunteers from a Cardiff business have transformed an unused patch of land at our school into a se- cret garden for pupils in the autism base. 12 members of staff from Countrywide Integrated Solutions in Cardiff donated their time and came to our school to makeover a small patch garden area for the students from our base.

Accelerated Scheme Years 7—9 were challenged to see which form could read the most words as part of the Accelerated Reader Scheme. The winning form, with a word count of 6,611,336 was 9CH5. We also had 9 pupils who had each read more than 1 million words. The pupils in 9CH5 and our millionaire readers were invited to a pizza party in the li- brary to celebrate their success.

Army Experience Day Year 12 Public Service and Business students participated in a teamwork and leadership activity day with the ar- my. They looked at the different careers they could go on to do in the army and put on camouflage and tasted army rations! After finding camouflaged items in a wooded area they divided into teams to take part in team build- ing activities including problem solving, fitness tasks and ultimately a tug of war. for Wales. The visit finished with Ian presenting certificates to the students for completion of the programme. This is an inspirational programme demonstrating to pupils that anything is achievable with the right attitude and hard work. All of the boys involved thoroughly enjoyed all of the sessions!

Celebration of Achievement Evening A night of celebration, and of recognising exceptional talent. Thursday the 5th of June, the school's most tal- ented and dedicated individuals were rewarded for their consistent hard-work throughout the year and many teachers and proud parents were there to witness it. Mrs Coulson, our Headteacher at Cwmbran High School, made sure to point out that she was, “extremely proud of all of the pupils at the school”. The evening ran similarly to previous years as teachers and special guests gifted many pupils from Year 7 to 13 with an array of awards, along with compering from Mr Miller and Mrs Ager, a musical interlude from the school choir and the Cwmbran Deaf Choir, and an inspirational speech from the night's guest of honour, Chris- tian Malcolm, a former Wales/ GB athlete. Christian Malcolm proved to be an invaluable speaker on the evening and an invaluable personality that motivated and brightened the hall both visually and audibly. Coming from small beginnings of being a regular Newport pupil much like pupils at Cwmbran High School, Christian Malcolm became a prime example of how far the very pupils sat in the hall on the awards evening can go. His anecdotes on becoming one of the worlds fastest athletes was an inspiration to all those present.

HI Base It’s been another busy term in the HIB and we were thrilled with our year 10s passing their IFS exams. Aqsa Jamshad (year 9) received the ALN award at this year’s Celebration of Achievement evening and it was thorough- ly deserved. She’s worked hard this year and has made great progress. Aqsa is a good role model to other pupils and we look forward to following her progress over the next few years. We also have a teacher congratulation too! Mr Griffin has qualified as a specialist Teacher of the Deaf! The past two years has been a gruelling return to the other side of the desk for him but as he says “I love my job so it was worth it!” We also welcomed a new pupil to year 7 in June, Marcela Horvathova, who has settled in well and is enjoying being here in CHS.

Summer Reward Trip For their excellent behaviour pupils were invited to Drayton Manor or West Midlands Safari Park. Pupils made the most of the water rides to keep cool and even managed to get the staff on as responsible accompanying adults!

Pupils Quiz Welsh Assembly Members Pupils including Cwmbran High and Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw joined youth organisations including the Scouts for the informal session. The National Assembly's Scrutiny of the First Minister Committee spent an hour with the young people and then the they had an opportunity to hold a question and answer session with the First Minister. Some of the experiences that the young people told the AMs about were used in the formal committee as part of questions to the First Minister, Carwyn Jones.

Ron Jones 100 Year Old Poppy Seller Visitor Ron Jones served in World War Two. When he was 18 he was captured by the Germans and taken all around Europe. He still remembers the small details like the dates and who his friends were. We are eternally grate- ful for his act of bravery.” Cerys Thomas, said: “His story meant so much to me and I think everyone in the hall as well. His story had a big impact on the pupils because he had an experience that not many people could have. He’s 100 years old and re- members every detail which makes it more extraordinary.” Mrs Adams, deputy head of year nine, said: “We were really pleased to welcome Ron to school this morning to talk to year nine. They were really interested in listening to his stories of his time in Auschwitz as a prisoner of war. It was a very rewarding and emotional experience for all of us.”

Sporting Achievements & Activities

Sports Activities At Cwmbran High we offer an extensive extra-curricular PE programme that is run jointly by the PE department and our 5x60 officer. Students have the opportunity to participate in competitive and non-competitive sporting activities during lunch time and after school. As a result over 650 students participated in at least one extra-curricular sporting activity last year. The activities offered to students are broad and varied to try and appeal to as many different in- terests’ students may have and to encourage as many students to participate as possible. Stu- dents had the opportunity to participate in basketball, badminton, 5 a’side football, trampolining, street dance, free running, cheerleading and students have the opportunity to use the fitness suite during lunchtime and after school. In addition to these opportunities we also competed in a range of matches and tournaments last year:

Rugby All Year Groups in KS3 and KS4 had the opportunity to compete against other schools in the au- thority. Year 9 & 11 students also had the opportunity to compete in the Welsh Schools cup. However, we unfortunately failed to progress beyond the group stages. Netball Clubs have been run on both Mondays and Tuesday afterschool, with all year groups in Key Stage 3 and 4 having the opportunity to compete against other schools in the authority. Netball club has been well attended with over 40 girls regularly attending training every week. Cwmbran High was well represented at the year 7, 8 and 9 Netball Tournaments and the year 10 team competed well within their league but unfortunately did not qualify for the finals. The commitment and positive attitude shown to both training and matches by all the students involved has been excellent and we will look to develop and build upon this next year.

A number of year 8 and 9 students have assisted with the year 7 netball club this year and are keen to make it a success. This has also helped them to develop their skills in coaching and umpiring.

The following students deserve a special mention for their commitment and performances:

Year 7— Lucy Gerrard, Olivia Johnson, Rhian Beer Year 8 – Maia Elsworthy, Summer Bowen Quirk, Caitlin Hodder, Rhian Arnold, Abbie Alford, Abigail Brown, Olivia C Lloyd, Anna Roden, Madison Green, Rea Barton, Phoebe Parry Howells, Livi Draper, Lily Adams, Olivia Hurley, Keeley Jones, Holly Marie Greening, Zoe Sharp, Bethany Lister Year 9 – Ellie Chapman, Angharad Witcombe, Nia Galivan, Mya Francis, Millie Lane, Cerys Davies Year 10 – Emma Cooney, Amy Payne, Elinor Green, Morgan Thomas, Mollie Williams, Madison Beard, Carys Sutton, Emily Parry Year 11 – Abbie Trotman, Catrin Arnold, Rosee Daveys

Congratulations to Ethan Hooper (Yr 7) who qualified to represent South East Wales in the Welsh Cross country championships held at Brecon in March. There were 90 competitors in the race and Ethan finished in 19th place. We are very proud of Ethan’s achievement particularly giv- en that this was only his 3rd cross country event.

Athletics

Throughout the summer term students had the opportunity to attend athletics club every Thursday afterschool. The response from students was excellent and consistently there were 30+ students participating in athletics events after school.

The athletics teams were chosen from students that attended the club and students participated in the inter-schools athletics championships.

10

Congratulations to all those students that were selected to represent the school in an athletics event but a special mention must be given to the following students who won the regional event and went on to compete in the county championships.

Joshua Preece (Yr8) - Shot putt (2nd in the county championships for the second consecutive year) Harry Evans (yr8) – Javelin (County Champion) Cordelia Goodger (Yr7) – 100m (2nd in the County Minors)

Sports Day

This year was Cwmbran High schools third sports day. It was a very successful day that built on the success of lasts year’s sports day. This year there was an even greater response from stu- dents with over 550 students competing in athletics events throughout the day.

Student of the Year

With-in the department we select a student every month that we feel deserves a special mention because of their efforts that month. This usually goes to a student that has 100% participation rate in lessons, has regularly attended extra-curricular clubs and has been committed to CHS sports teams.

All of those students that received a student of the month nomination were considered for the student of the year in PE and it was difficult to narrow the selection down to one boy and one girl for each year group. However, congratulations to the following students on being elected as ‘Student of the Year’ in PE last year :

Year 7 Ethan Hooper, Maddison Green Year 8 Lewis Macauley, Summer Bowen Year 9 Sol Jackson, Ellie Chapman Year 10 Jermarie Chatham, Amy Payne Year 11 Ethan Stevens, Catrin Arnold Year 12 Chloe Parry-Howells Year 13 Keilan Beagan

PE trophies

Each year the department presents a special trophy to the best boy or girl from across all year groups. This trophy is presented to students for excellent academic performance in PE, for their sporting success on the sports field or for their help with-in the PE department and their leader- ship skills. This years worthy winner was:

Declan Rawlings - Declan is a hardworking and enthusiastic student. He is also a talented sportsman who has demonstrated excellent commitment to the PE department and 5x60 clubs this year. As a volunteer coach he has coached the Year 7 boys and girls football teams, delivered sport sessions in our local feeder primary schools and helped out with sports develop- ment festivals including Newport county football festival and school sport transition festivals. Declan has made the most of various other opportunities to further develop as a coach and has achieved his football leaders and tennis activators award. As a result of all the hard work Declan has done this year he has also been nominated for an award with the welsh football trust and we are waiting to hear the result. Declan has been a massive help to the PE department and sports development this year and is well on track to become a fantastic coach of the future.

Achievement Targets 2018

We are required by the Welsh Assembly Government to set and publish targets for pupil attainment at KS3 and at KS4.

Outcomes are inevitably subject to variations in ability of Year Groups as well as to the even more significant factors of attitude and work ethic.

The targets we set are intended to be realistic, challenging, manageable and attainable.
