ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH Dissertation Andrews University School of Education Title: INDONESIA UNION COLLEGE: A HISTORICAL STUDY OF A SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST INSTITUTION, 1929-1970 Name of researcher: Rajoaman Nainggolan Name and degree of faculty adviser: John 8. Youngberg, Ed.D. Date completed: August 1984 Problem The first Seventh-day Adventist training school established in Indonesia was the Netherlands East Indies Training School (Indonesia Union College after 1962) founded in 1929. The school has since grown considerably and achieved university status, but no comprehensive history of it has been written. This lack points to a need for a systematic examination of tne development of Seventh-day Adventist higher education in Indonesia. This study reconstructs the history of this institution from 1929 to 1970. Method The documentary-historical method, based on published and unpublished materials, was used. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. 3 periodicals, school bulletins, minutes of the Indonesia Union Mission, Indonesia Union College board and faculty; school financial state­ ments, correspondence, and other documents pertaining to the history of the school. Indonesian materials were translated into English by the writer. Cone 1usi ons Indonesia Union College was founded in a small compound for a small objective--to train Bible workers and colporteurs. It grew as its goals and objectives were broadened to follow Ellen G. White's concept of education--to train masses of church youth in character development and for service to God and to humanity. These philosophical objectives coincided with rising national educational expectations of schooling the masses. The early curriculum, patterned after American Adventist education, was inadequate for the long-term interest of the constituency. Therefore, Indonesia Union College gradually shifted to the structure of the national system of education. Curriculum originally designed to gain accreditation as a senior college by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists status, began changing to meet the minimum requirements of the Indonesian Department of Education. From the examination of the history of the school between 1929 to 1970, it is concluded that the philosophy that guided the operation of the institution has remained basically the same. Special emphases, however, have been given to certain aspects from time to time. The philosophical question, "Education for what?" remains and must be firmly addressed. Academic Freedom: From the Ancient Greek Civilization to the End of World War II The pioneer of academic freedom is believed to occur at time of the Trial of Socrates. It was pioneered by the principle to seek and to reveal the truth to the public during Socrates’ life and after his death by Plato.1 Through the centuries, Frederick I Barbarossa established Authentica Habita as the source of legal protection for scholars in 1155 AD, where roads were unsafe, and dangers were everywhere threating everyone.2 Nearly eight centuries later, during the World War II, Franklin Delano Roosevelt3 introduced Four Freedoms in 1941 namely Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom from Fear, and Freedom from Want4 which was declared as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN in 1948. Indonesia. e-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article discusses the possibility of re-evoking and invigorating romantic spirits to reiterate Indonesian national identity. This commences from the fact that despite its comparatively young age, Indonesia has experienced a number of heroic and romantic struggles, notable in our national history; for instance, the “national awakening movement” Boedi Oetomo in 1908, which became the first modern symbol of national struggle in Indonesia, the Sumpah Pemuda in 1928, which instilled in the youth's mind the three factors in common as our national identity, which binds our multi-cultural existence and experiences i.e. the unity of territory, language, and nation; andth the third is Indonesian Declaration of Independence, 17 of August 1945. This study starts from the assumption that those three symbols of struggle and identity are imprinted with romantic spirits, i.e. the sentimental feelings and emotions, which are no longer dealing with the worldly and materialistic considerations. In this discussion, one might question whether Indonesia has ever experienced any romantic movement as what European countries and America had in the end of the 18th century, yet that might not be so critical question in this case. Instead, what might be considered more important is another question such as, “do we need that kind of movement nowadays in order to clearly pronounce our identity?” By careful readings, observations and interpretations based on historiography and other references, this article sees that an attempt to give birth to our own Romanticism might be feasible as a good solution to rebuild our nationalism, since it Keywordsalso deals with recognizing and recalling our lost identity.

    M arriageable Ag e : Political Debates on Early Marriage in Twentieth- C entury Indonesia Susan Blackburn and Sharon Bessell The purpose of this article is to show how the age of marriage, especially for girls, became a political issue in twentieth century Indonesia, and to investigate the changing intensity, focus, and participation in the debate over the issue. Compared with India, the incidence of very early marriage among Indonesian girls appears never to have been exceptionally high, yet among those trying to "modernize" Indonesia the fact that parents married off their daughters at or before the onset of puberty was considered a "social evil." Social reformers differed as to the reasons for their concern and as to what action should be taken and by whom. In particular there were strong disagreements about whether government intervention was either desirable or effective in raising the age of marriage. The age at which it is appropriate for girls to marry has been a contentious matter in many countries in recent centuries. In societies where marriage was considered to be the prerogative of families, the children themselves were rarely consulted and the age of marriage, or at least of betrothal, was likely to be quite young, before children could exert their own will. Although physical readiness for sexual intercourse and child­ bearing was a consideration, this was a matter to be supervised by adult kin, and the wedding could, if necessary, be timed so that it occurred separately from the consummation of marriage. Apart from families, the only other institutions directly concerned with marriage were likely to be religious ones.

    BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. Latar Belakang Sejarah sebagai suatu narasi besar diperlihatkan melalui peristiwa dan tokoh besar dengan mendokumentasikan asal-usul kejadian, menganalisis geneologi, lalu membangun dan mempertahankan keistimewaan suatu peristiwa, memilih peristiwa yang dianggap spektakuler (seperti perang).1 Bagi sejarawan yang ingin memahami perjalanan sejarah Indonesia Modern, hal yang terkadang menimbulkan rasa frustrasi ialah justru karena kejadian yang paling misterius ternyata merupakan salah satu babak kejadian yang terpenting. Kebenaran sejarah terletak dalam kesediaan sejarawan untuk meneliti sumber sejarah secara tuntas, sehingga dapat diharapkan sejarawan akan mengungkapkan secara objektif.2 Perjalanan sejarah banyak meninggalkan kesan faktual betapa pemikiran seorang tokoh mempunyai peran penting dan kontribusi di jamannya. Negara Indonesia lahir dan diproklamasikan pada tanggal 17 Agustus 1945 oleh Dwitunggal Soekarno-Hatta atas nama Bangsa Indonesia. Sejak pengakuan kedaulatan, nyaris tidak ada hari tanpa konflik yang menerpa Indonesia.     LKPJ WALIKOTA SEMARANG AKHIR TAHUN ANGGARAN 2014 4.1.3 URUSAN WAJIB PEKERJAAN UMUM 4.1.3.1 KONDISI UMUM Urusan pekerjaan Umum dilaksanakan dalam penyelenggaraan pemerinatahan daerah karena berfungsi strategis sebagai penggerak pertumbuhan ekonomi baik regional maupun lintas wilayah pemerintahan. Pekerjaan Umum erat kaitannya dengan pembangunan Infrstruktur baik menyediakan sistem transportasi, pengairan, drainase, bangunan-bangunan gedung dan fasilitas publik yang lain yang dibutuhkan untuk memenuhi kebutuhan dasar manusia dalam lingkup sosial dan ekonomi (Grigg, 1988). Pelaksanaan urusan ini di Pemerintah Kota Semarang secara teknis dilakukan oleh Dinas Bina Marga Kota Semarang, Dinas PSDA & ESDM Kota Semarang dan Dinas Penerangan Jalan dan Pengelolaan Reklame Kota Semarang. 4.1.3.2 KEBIJAKAN PROGRAM Pelaksanaan Kebijakan Program pada tahun ini masih mengacu pada pada perwujudan keseimbangan pertumbuhan dan pelayanan wilayah yang lebih diakselerasikan melalui (1) pembentukan struktur jaringan jalan sesuai dengan hirarki dan pelayanan jalan, interkoneksi antar bagian wilayah pengembangan dan antar pusat pelayanan transportasi dan pusat pelayanan perkotaan serta peningkatan kapasitas jalan; (2) pengendalian dan penanggulangan banjir dan rob terpadu dan sistemik ; (3) penyelesaian DAM jatibarang beserta komponennya, pembangunan sistem drainase wilayah dan kawasan, dan (4) penyempurnaan wajah kota (5) pemenuhan kebutuhan air bersih masyarakat serta menjaga kualitas dan kuantitas sumber daya air. Wujud pelaksanaan Urusan Pekerjaan Umum ini diimpelemntasikan dalam RKPD dan APBD Kota Semarang Tahun 2014 adalah sebagai berikut: Program-program penunjang, yang meliputi : 1. The information started to come in about a year ago. Whlle some of the responses were quite detalled, there were others that were rather general and indefinite. There were gaps and omissions and in several instances conflicting statements on certain events. In view of the limited time and the apparent cessation of incoming materials from the field, a small committee was named with Doctor Walton J. Brown as chairman. It was this committee's responsibility to execute the project in spite of the lack of substantiation of certain information. We believe that this is the first project of its kind in the denomination's history. It is hoped that when the various educators and administrators re­ view the data about their own organizations, they will notify the Department of Education concerning any corrections and additions. They should please include supporting evidence from as many sources as possible. It is hoped that within the next five to ten years a revised edition may replace this first one. It would contain not only necessary changes, but also would be brought up to date.
