Laconia residents needing sand for their driveways or walkways during this icy weather can get sand from our Department of Public Works. There is a sand pile for residential use located at our DPW garage at 257 Messer Street. Residents can get a maximum of two five gallon pails (or the equivalent). Support Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation and help save the environment all through February by purchasing a reusable Community Cause shopping bag at the Gilford Hannaford
The Lakes Region Scholarship Foundation is pleased to be the featured “cause” of the month at the Gilford Hannaford Supermarket. Mr. Brian Burns, Store Manager for the Gilford Hannaford store, said that each month a local charity or service organization is chosen by the store. When a customer purchases one of their reusable shopping bags, Hannaford donates $1 to that organization. LRSF will be the featured “cause” for the month of February.
Assistant LRSF Director, Karen Switzer, offered many thanks to Mr. Burns at Hannaford for his support and said that she hoped that many people in the area would stop in and shop at the Gilford Hannaford during the month of February and purchase a bag to take their groceries home. "We have a motto at the office that every drop in the bucket, even the smallest, helps us at the Scholarship Foundation. We hope that you can be part of this special fundraiser."

Lakes Region Woodwind Quintet in Concert, Feb. 10 at Taylor Community
Taylor Community’s 2019 Concert Series, sponsored by Bank of New Hampshire, continues Sunday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. with the Lakes Region Woodwind Quintet. The musical event is in Taylor’s Woodside Building and is free and open to the public.
The group is comprised of Doris Henney, Flute; Kenda Corcoran, Oboe; Debbi Gibson, Clarinet; Nancy Goldenhar, Bassoon, and Robin Jackman, French Horn.
Music will include selections from Mozart, Oscar Hammerstein, Jerome Kern and Scott Joplin.
This is the seventh season for the concert series, which provides free first-class musical concerts in various genres for both Taylor residents and the local community. The Wrecks of Winnipesaukee with Hans Hug, Jr., February 11
Scuba diver and history buff Hans Hug, Jr. presents a program, entitled “Wrecks of Winnipesaukee,” Monday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. in Taylor Community’s Woodside Building. While the event is free is open to the public, seating is limited and reservations are required by calling Brenda at 366-1226.
Hug will show a brief video of one of his shipwreck dives, along with photographs and sonar images of wrecks. The event will last approximately 80 minutes, with plenty of time for questions.
For 30 years, Hug has been an avid diver throughout New England, from the Connecticut River to Cape Cod. He has dived all over Lake Winnipesaukee, using sophisticated side scan sonar equipment. He has located more than 80 wrecks in the lake, including large pieces of the original steamer Mt. Washington.

The Congregational Church of Laconia--United Church of Christ invites you to a book discussion that will help you re-imagine the church in a rapidly changing world. Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory by Tod Bolsinger uses the Lewis and Clark expedition as a metaphor for what the church faces today. Seeking a water route to the Pacific Ocean, Lewis and Clark were in no way prepared for the Rocky Mountains. They were faced with the choice of abandoning their mission or finding another way forward. Bolsinger offers insights and tools helpful in thinking about what effective church leadership looks like today.
No matter what your church affiliation, join us as Martha Clement facilitates discussions on Tuesday, February 5 and 19 and March 5 at either noon or 6:30 pm in the Multipurpose Room/Library of the Parish House of the church in Veterans’ Square. Free Tax Help - Federal Income Tax Assistance Available AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program to be offered at Laconia Senior Center 17 Church Street Again this year the AARP Tax-Aide program, which provides Free Tax assistance in preparing and electronically filing your Federal Income Tax return, will be offered at the Laconia Senior Center at 17 Church Street. While the program gives special attention to all those 60 years of age and up, taxpayers with low and moderate income will also be accommo- dated by AARP personnel. Assistance will be provided as follows: Wednesdays 8:30 am to 2:00 pm (February 6 thru February 27) and Thursdays, 8:30 am to 2:00 pm (February 7 thru April 11) The service will be offered on an appointment basis. Call the Laconia Senior Center at 524-7689 to make an appointment. Taxpayers are asked to bring the following: photo ID, copy of last year’s income tax return, W-2 forms, any 1099 forms, dependent care provider info, proof of itemizing deductions, health insurance documents and Social Security cards or documentation for yourself and all dependents. International Film Series – Akeelah and the Bee February 4, 2019 The Laconia Human Relations Committee in cooperation with the Laconia Public Library offers the film, Akeelah and the Bee, as the February selection for the International Film Series. The film will be shown on Monday, February 4 at 6:15 pm at the Library. Free and open to the public with a light snack and brief discussion after the film. Feel free to bring a chair cushion!
Akeelah is an 11-year-old girl who with much effort and encouragement participates in the Scripps Nation- al Spelling Bee. She attends Crenshaw Middle School, a predominantly black school in South Los Ange- les. She lives with her widowed mother, sister, older brothers, and infant niece. Her principal suggests that she sign up for the Crenshaw Schoolwide Spelling Bee because of her excellent spelling record. She refuses, intimidated by the public arena. He so wants the school to do well that he threatens her with detention if she doesn’t agree to enter. She gives in, enters the spelling bee, and wins.
Moving beyond her own school in the very ‘white world’ of competitive national spelling bees, Akeelah is tested far beyond what she thought she could handle. An English professor friend of the principal, with some resistance, finally agrees to help her prepare for advancement. Who knew how much there is to learn about the history of words in order to be able to spell all those words never heard before! She meets Javier Mendez, a 12-year-old Mexican American boy and fellow speller. He invites her to join the spelling club at his Woodland Hills Middle School in a white part of LA. The intricacies of preparing for spelling bees are interlaced with cross-cultural incidents and a stiff competitive environment, producing a cliff-hanger story in this 2006 film.
This is another in the International Film Series shown monthly from September through June at the Laconia Public Library.
