Lessons in the phonetic values of letters works very well in Europe, but probably that is because the languages involved have more consistently phonetic spellings than has English. 2003. Not all spellers heading for Washington, DC, for the National Spelling Bee on June 1-3 think English spelling is a good thing that should be celebrated. While spectators and judges inside the Grand Hyatt Hotel will be pondering the spellings of obscure words, and admiring the efforts of contestants, outside on the street some members of the American Literacy Council (ALC) and the Simplified Spelling Society (SSS) will be trying to convince passers-by that English spelling is a problem that needs fixing. Like those inside, they [may] admire the efforts of contestants, but they will have signs and sandwich boards with slogans such as "I'm thru with through" and "Enuf is enuf. Enough is too much". Their aim is to alert parents, educators, politicians, business people, and others concerned about the unacceptable level of illiteracy among English-speakers, to the fact that a prime cause for this is English spelling. It is a bit too predictable. Akeelah and the Bee (+++) is a feel-good movie. It's about an 11 year-old girl from an LA ghetto who aspires to win the national spelling bee. It's a bit like "Rocky," though Sylvester Stallone can barely speak English let alone spell "concierge." (Akeelah actually mispelled this word in the movie, but was judged correct.) Keke Palmer, who plays the little girl, and Laurence Fishburne, who plays her coach, are true champions. All the Kings Men (- -) is really awful as the entire cast of great actors’ talents are wasted on a really poorly directed and edited remake of a classic. Sean Penn overacts. James Gandolfini seems like he walked onto the wrong set. Babel (+++) is one of the most intense and gripping movies I have ever seen. It is like the globalization of "Crash," another excellent and gripping movie about how we humans are so interconnected with both good and bad consequences. Borat (- - -) WARNING: Do not see "Borat." Do not let your kids see it. It is among the worst and most tasteless movies of all times! Casino Royale (++) is actually one of the better 007 movies. Daniel Craig plays James Bond better than all the previous actors with the exception of Sean Connery, of course. I also liked that this latest Bond movie was faster paced, better written, and just more entertaining than some of the last few double-O spy thrillers, which were on the boring side and tended to be caricatures of the franchise.

I met him once, many years ago, at the Molde International Jazz Festival. He was a very kind man, and when he realized I was doing some useful work on ja zz tenor saxophone, he invited me to his hotel room for whisky. We had a very nice time together in the light summer night of Norway! Early history: His brother, a saxophonist, gave Buddy an alto in 1925. Two years later began gigging with McCloud's Night Owls (led by his cousin, trumpeter Roy McCloud). In 1929 played for several months in Wichita Falls with the St. Louis Merrymakers, later that year joined Troy Floyd's Band in San Antonio. Briefly with Gene Coy's Band, then with Terrence Holder's 12 Clouds of Joy from 1930-33. Worked with E. J. Malone and his Rhythm Kings (early 1933), Wesley Smiths' Band, ‘Tan Town Topics’, and Ethel May's Band before joining Count Basie in Little Rock, Arkansas (ca. July 1934). From late 1934 until early summer 1935 with Andy Kirk, played with band at Wiley College, Texas, then long spell with Nat Towles until joining Count Basie in spring 1939. Remained with Basie until September 1948, brief return in early 1949, then for the rest of that year worked mostly with Hot Lips Page, occasionally with Lucky Millinder.

    AKEELAH AND THE BEE About The Production One could say that the origins for this inspirational drama began as far back as 1994 when writer/director Doug Atchison found himself captivated by “The National Spelling Bee” on ESPN. While watching a basketball game, he channel-surfed during a commercial break and came upon the spelling bee airing live on the sports network. He became rapt and even caught himself trying to spell the words and rooting for the kids. Atchison noticed that most of the contestants seemed to come from privileged backgrounds whose families had the resources to allow their kids to pursue this unusual activity. Says Atchison, “It struck me that there was a story to tell about a child who had the natural ability for this kind of activity but who didn't have access to the resources or coaching to pursue it as these other kids had.” It was then that he decided to write a screenplay. Time passed and Atchison worked on other projects. But he could never quite shake the story of a kid, named Akeelah, from the back of his head. Every year he would watch the spelling bee and get the impulse to develop her story further. “I would watch and think about her. I would start telling my friends and my family the story about this little girl and the spelling bee. But I never wrote it.” In fact, he kept thinking of reasons why he shouldn’t, even questioning whether he was the right person to do it. When someone pointed out to him that he was afraid to write it, Atchison had a revelation.
