Brevard Live November 2010 - 31 Spooky Story The Legend Of D-12

By Matthew Bretz ctober may be gone for this year, but that Odoesn’t mean there isn’t time for just one more spooky story. Whether or not you believe in ghosts some things just don’t seem to have a rea- sonable explanation. And the newly born legend of D-12 is just such a story.

In north Melbourne, just off of Wickham Road there is a bundle of warehouses for rent for business purposes. One such warehouse is rented by Brendon Paredes of Studio 101, a rehearsal space and professional record- ing studio. For the last two years Brendon has held to roughly the same schedule. Musicians are night owls and he is too, so most of his business is done during the late hours. Every night after he closes around 2 am he walks the day’s trash about 80 feet to the dumpsters at the end of the parking lot right next to the last unit - unit D-12. From time to time Brendon noticed that the tenants of D-12 would leave the lights on in their unit. He could also hear the radio on at a high level in the back room. It wasn’t every night, but it happened often enough for him to scratch his head at the forgetfulness of the tenants. Unbeknownst to Brendon, however, there was one prob- lem with his theory about forgetful tenants. There were no tenants. Until recently D-12 had remained vacant for over two years. Pelican Sales is a company dealing in mostly gov- ernment contracts. They order and ship anything from computers to gas masks for the military and have no time to mess around with nonsense. So when they decided to expand their business and take over D-12 they were not amused by the events that followed. Almost immediately thing started to happen. At first it was the same trick of the lights and radio coming on at night. Not knowing the history they assumed it was a lazy employee, but when the employee left the company and things kept happening they got suspicious. One night in particular they were working late and decided to take a break for dinner. They were gone roughly an hour and when they returned D-12 was waiting for them fully lit and radio on. They also noticed a calculator had been turned on with the number 15 typed in. 15 also looks like

32 - Brevard Live November 2010 “is”. There was one more surprise for them. The phone was off the hook and it still has a dial tone, meaning its removal from the base unit had taken place within the last five minutes. Spooked, they went home for the night. A few days later the lights came on again, this time while they were working next door in D-11. After that, came banging on the wall for nearly an hour as if some- one was next door. When it failed to stop the owner went through the adjoining door in anger and screamed to the empty space to stop. Then he turned out the light in the back room where they keep the server unit for their busi- ness. He turned and walked ten steps before the light came back on by itself. Ordinarily they will receive fifty to a hundred e-mails a day due to their work load. Af- ter that night e-mail stopped for five days. Coincidence? Maybe, but remember almost everything happens in the room that stores the server responsible for routing email. Finally the owners of Pelican Sales confronted the property manager to find out if he knew anything about what was going on. They found out a lot. A couple of years ago D-12 was rented by a man named James K. White. He was a bit of a hoarder and by all accounts a fairly intelligent man when it came to electronics. White rented D-12 for a few months and then one day disap- peared. Shortly after the strange disappearance two Federal agents visited the manager’s office looking for White. When the manager told them he had left everything be- hind and vanished, the agents told him why they were there. Apparently James K. White had lived in Miami before transplanting to the Space Coast, but before he moved, and probably why he moved, he had slaughtered two families in their homes. He had been involved in a minor traffic infraction and the computer was able to red flag his picture. White probably thought of this and skipped town. It appears that nobody actually died in the unit un- less White was practicing his handy work inside, but no-one really knows. All we do know is that a murderer once rented a unit that now appears to be haunted. Peli- can Sales still rents the unit and strange things continue to happen. I myself have very recently seen the lights and heard the radio. Brendon stays as far away as he can from D-12 and will only empty his trash during daylight hours. It’s also interesting to note that a strange accident happened at the intersection turning into the warehouses where apparently two sisters driving in opposite direc- tions by coincidence collided at that exact spot and were killed. Ghosts or not - it’s pretty weird.

Brevard Live November 2010 - 41 Florida Art

As a long-time member of the Florida Pro- fessional Tattoo Artists’ Guild (FPTAG) , Dif- fie has been hoping for new legislation for tat- too studios. He would like to see tattoo studios across the state be supervised under the state government rather than the doctors who cur- rently inspect the parlor themselves. However, Diffie says it’s important to note that the state can make new laws to make it safer to get tat- toos but it cannot regulate the quality of the art. Over the years, Diffie and Murphy have encountered several interesting people and scenarios. They told a story of a man who re- quested an elaborate portrait tattoo of his wife, which was quite tedious to create since it used a surplus of dark black ink, but turned out look- ing great. However, a year and a half later, the man returned with a request to have the tattoo covered up since he had divorced his wife (he expected the tattoo to help strengthen their re- lationship). Diffie and Murphy were puzzled on what to do to cover up the tattoo, but they all finally settled on making the portrait of the wife into a portrait of a Valkyrie to hide his wife’s image. They chuckle about the instances where customers have complained about their tattoo being “backwards” when they looked at it in the mirror. The tattoo industry started with “flash” which are standard designs offered by studios. This is where people would come in and choose a design off the studio wall. At Against the Brevard Ink: Grain, you won’t find much flash on the walls. Instead, Diffie and Murphy focus more on cus- tomized tattoos. 42 - Brevard Live November 2010 Brevard Live November 2010 - 43 I’m Not A Hero! By Matthew Bretz

I’m not a hero. Some may call me one. Some may also call me good Samaritan, productive citizen, law bringer, revolutionary or even warlord- but I’m really only mostly those things. No, I’m not a hero. Just a good boyfriend.

It was a quiet Sunday night in the sprawling neigh- borhood city of Palm Bay, Florida. I was having a pleas- ant argument with my girl in the driveway. Not wanting to draw neighborly attention I suggested we take a drive. So we did. After a nominal five minutes of angry driving she suddenly realized her phone was not on her person. Upon further search and analysis we determined that the phone in question must have been on the hood of the car when we drove away from the house. We hadn’t gone far so it was easy to retrace our path and scan the edges of the street for her precious com unit. After a couple turns around the track I tried calling the phone, hoping it might be within earshot. To my surprise somebody picked up, but wouldn’t speak. Then it went dead. Many repeated attempts to contact whoever was now in possession of the phone only produced the cheery voicemail of a young woman who might never hear her messages again. That was it I thought, all was lost. Nowadays phones are more than simple communica- tion devices. They are our address books, our phone num- ber directories, and our organizers. They have become as personal and unique as we ourselves are and cannot be easily replaced. And so it was with Janet’s phone. With sadness in her heart and a longing for the texts she would never get to read, she accepted the reality that her phone was no longer hers. Around 830 p.m. that very same night I was pretend- ing to watch football (not really a fan) at my cousin’s house in Melbourne when I received a call from an “un- known number”. “Hello?”, I answered. “Yeah…I found a phone earlier around Malabar road and I found this number in it.” “Fantastic!”, I exclaimed. “My girlfriend will be so happy. Where can I meet you?” “I’m at the Walmart on Malabar road. We want 45 for the phone back.” “Wait a second. Are you telling me you want me to pay you 45 dollars to get back my girl’s lost phone?”

“Yeah…45 or you can’t have it back.” I was stunned. Here I was happy to get a call from a help- ful citizen only to discover a punk looking to extort money for a lost and found phone. The truth is I was planning on giving him a reward before I found out his plan. Now I had something else in mind. “I’ll be there in 20 minutes”, I said and hung up. On the way I made another call- this time to the Palm Bay Police department. I explained the situation and asked if they could help me retrieve the phone without paying out.
